slothparade
Thanks, pretty sure the lock on the side shows it's secure to. Also be aware of pay id scams, I've lost a large amount of money to one.
Green Hornet
Thanks for the heads up @Rebel. I always try to buy from reputable places I know and have previously dealt with. Also check for the closed padlock as @slothparade mentioned.
Restyle
if you use google chrome, it will usually tell you before visiting a http site that it is unsafe. If you do not place banking details, passwords or whatever on a http site its generally safe but still exercise caution, on any website. For example the bureau of meteorology is still on "http". Difference between http and https in short is https encrypts the data you input into it, passwords, banking stuff, etc while http is generally plain text. For sites to use https they'll need a ssl certificate as well so its a whole lot more work anyway. 2
Green Hornet
Another thing I always do is pay via PayPal. They hold the money for 21 days, so if you haven’t received tracking details from the courier say within a fortnight, you can cancel the transaction. Anything other than specialized stuff I like to buy via eBay or similar where you can easily check a retailer’s history. I might pay an extra dollar or two from time to time, but I’ve never been burnt and living where I do, where good stores are almost non existent, I buy a lot of stuff, including most of my tackle on line.
Rebel
@RestyleNo wonder the Meteorology can't get the weather right. According to my expert " http" is asking for trouble. Beaware. Like @Green Hornet I only use Paypal online. If they haven;t got Paypal I move on to somebody who has.
noelm
Most "professional" scam sites look just like a legitimate site, down to the last detail, don't be fooled by locks and stuff like that, even when you're super cautious you can still be caught out! I got caught fairly recently with State of Origin tickets, the site looked exactly like Ticketek, but as I was finalising the process I noticed something a bit fishy, (a tiny reference to offshore) and contacted my credit card company, they checked it out and confirmed it was a scam, and I worked in IT for 25 years..........it's easy to get caught.
