big Neil
Firstly let me explain the title and why it appears in the forum "Social Events". The older Raiders would no doubt be aware of an old TV show called Gilligan's Island. A group of people set off on a short cruise and ended up marooned on an island. No need to go into detail of the interaction between the unfortunate castaways, for this comparative tale. I have put it in SOCIAL EVENTS because that's what it started out as... a group of Fishraiders catching up for a social day on the water. DerekD, Floris, big Neil and a non Fishraider (John). The day started off on schedule when we met up and loaded the fishing gear and the picnic goodies, supplied by Floris, who is a joint owner of the HAIRY OTTER. It has other names but they are not printable on this forum. r-l Derek, Floris, John ready to board the HAIRY OTTER Captain Floris at the (wooden) helm Pre problem scenery We cruised around the numerous bays, moorings, and wharves looking for evidence of piscatorial existence. Alas there was none. We chatted away as Floris skillfully guided the vessel through the busy Sydney Harbour traffic. Then the trouble started and the engine (VOLVO PENTA) conked out. Lifting the hatch revealed copious amounts of Carbon Monoxide, which, initially appeared to be a fire. A large worm clip had rusted out and ceased to hold the exhaust together, so the motor wouldn't function properly. Luckily Floris worked out a way for us to keep going, albeit in fits and starts. Unlike the castaways on the SS Minnow we managed to hobble back to the original point of departure. John is a non angler but in the company of 3 distinguished Fishraiders he felt confident of catching his first fish. Alas, we let him down and despite the collective capabilities of the rest of the crew, he left the vessel fishless. At least, thanks to Floris' ingenuity, we didn't need to be towed ignominiously back to the dock. Well done Floris. We enjoyed the scenery and the beautiful picnic which Floris provided and lamented our inability to catch anything. It was great to share some camaraderie with each other whilst taking in the beauty of this magnificent harbour. bn Floris DerekD
bessell1955
Indeed BN, it does sound an episode of the SS Minnow. But this one had a hap pay ending and you did not end up as castaways. All the very best for 2023.
