faker
Hi Guys, do you reckon you can get away with using a medium rod for heavier soft plastics like 4-6 inches soft plastics with jighead?
dirvin21
Depends what sort of rod you're talking about I use a 4-8kg rod for larger plastics and soft vibes

noelm
If that's all you have, then use it! Just because a piece of gear is not "specialised" doesn't mean it won't work, sometimes you just have to adapt, it might not be ideal, but that's life.

For your rod, you might need jigheads 1/2oz and upwards to hit your 20g minimum cast weight, including the plastic. Sometimes you can get away with lighter, it is hard to know until you try it. The key is to try.

Rebel
If you don't try it you will never never know. Fishing is expermenting with all types of gear. Thats how you become a good fisherman. It takes time. I am still learning. With all the new gear on the market it can be a nightmare. Keep on ''Truckin'' Mate.
BaitDropper
I use a bunch of not "specifically designed" to use rods for all manner of fishing. The fish cares not what's above the water line, give it a go, it's all trial and error in my opinion. Otherwise we would be taking out, 27 rods and reels every time we loaded the boat heading out for a fish. Sure, if I was heavily fishing one method all the time, I'd of course look to buying a more suitable set up, but as others have said, give it a crack .. It amazes me in all honesty, ( Another topic, not directed as a response to your question Faker ) all the marketing and new technology that we see all the time now, stating how you simply have to buy this new product, otherwise you won't catch !! Good on all if they have the funds to buy the new offerings, but in my opinion, a lot of it is pure marketing. I'll admit I delve into the odd new rod and reel every so often, they for sure have made things way smoother and stronger to use, but I have a bigger smile on my face when I raise a decent fish with my older gear...
