FishingAustralia
Gday Raiders, Ive been trying to catch kingfish for several months now, ive been using live yellowtail to no avail. Ive been looking at squid jigging for a while but found it to be inconsistent and usually a waste of time. However as the water temps start to increase ive decided to focus my efforts on squid jigging i have a 3.75m tinny and a 39.5ft riviera 395 suv and was looking to catch some squid and or cuttlefish around middle harbour ive seen dropper rigs work well and was looking for some advice on that too. Best Regards Craig
DerekD
Have you found this one: I didn't put much in this article on squid droppers but I may go back an add a few things to it down the track. I think I may also add in some additional information on specifically targeting cuttlefish.
Larkin
Hi Craig really easy to make and work really well in deeper water. 3 way crane swivel at top + egi clip about 60-80cm to a small loop knot + egi clip, then another 60-80cm to a 3oz snapper lead. I use a light lead - enough to keep it down & light enough to skip over snags. I use this weight for reef depths 10-25m. Use two different coloured jigs. works great in deep water and jigs are high enough to prevent snagging on the reefs. Peak time for kingfish inside is around February. But anytime after Christmas is good time. When using yakkas find bait schools and keep your livie in the water column just above or below the bait ball. When a king comes by it will see the lone fish off the bait ball - which is the easiest target. The livelier your bait the better - kings won’t chase a half dead livie. Make them swim harder which turns the kings on too. Can vouch for the rig, works well

That setup looks awesome, just wondering where do you get those little green squid jig hook protectors?

Yeah, the rig works really well in deep water. I got those protectors at my local tackle shop - if you google squid hook protectors you’ll find them.
