    Battery

Hey guys, I think its time to replace my old starter battery as its cranking reaaaaly slowly and dies pretty quick. Im running a 1980 70hp johnson so i was wondering what batteries you guys would reccomend. i should note though that i would like to spend as little as possible whilst getting a reliabe battery that will last a few years at least. cheers. btw i live in the inner west if there are any places around that have good deals. thanks heaps guys.
  3. spiders hitch to doubble up your braid, then a simple uni knot.. not only extremely strong but easy and quick to tie.. what are were you fishing in? id like to go after some kings this friday. cheers.
  4. yeah mate, your missing the squid and slimeys..
  5. Hey mate, i own a pretty dodgy boat so im used to problems happening all the time, I know it sounds really obviouse but have you checked to make sure that your fuel tank is venting properly? If there is no way for air to enter your tank then the motor cannot suck fuel out of it and it will eventually splutter and stall, leaving you with a soft bulb. Make sure the little vent thing on top of your fuel tank cap is open.
  6. i think that must have been one of those unbranded reels off a well known auction site.. I dont know how the reels go but i can shed some light on the braid. I bought 500m for roughly $6, it was nice to use for the first month then went to shit... At that price you can afford to replace it that often and id rather use that than good mono.
  7. Sorry Tan I have to dissagree, i have taught my younger sister and a number of young cousins to fish on these wharves and am sad that future generations wont have this ooportunity. I think the banning of these wharves will only shift the problem elsewhere and lead to justifying further bans around the harbour. if they ban fishing at half the wharves it will just double the number at the remaining places. I hope these retards that leave their crap around get it into their head before its too late.
  8. thanks for the reply mate. hopefully next time there wont be so much weed in the water so i can float a yakka however i hear its not the best spot for kings... or maybe ill have to prove that wrong. Also what strength mono is best for fishing from the bricks? i have a spool of 40lb braid but i hear thats pretty bad to use off the rocks because of nicking etc. in regards to footware are those metal cleats screwed into some shoes sufficient?
  9. +1 to Hewitt Marine for the engine. They may be a fair drive but if you pick a time where theres no traffic it can be done in no time. Took my 1980 johnson 70 there to get her going and they were straightforward and told me exactly what i needed and what not to bother with. They got my engine running beautifully without alot of the unnecessary works i was quoted for by other mechanics. If i cant fix electrical problems myself this week i will surely book in there. we took it to a well known marine mechanic in croydon first and were kicking ourselves afterwards for the waste of time and money that place was, we should have just bit the bullet and gone with quality first. P.S. im a fulltime student so you can consider me to be the biggest tightass around and i found them fair and helpful.
  10. Hope so mate. Does anyone have any advice on how to rig yakkas for kings off the rocks and where to position them? I tried floating one on the day but there was too much weed in the water. if floating what is a good length to keep them from the float and what rig to use? Cheers guys
  11. My friend had been telling me about a fishing ledge on the central coast that he had been introduced too recently and invited me to come out on sunday morning. I had many questions regarding the safety of this ledge as i had no cleats but with the swell and wind very low i decided late saturday night to go. At first my concerns of fishing from the rocks were confirmed as we began the treck through the darkness over mossy rocks and knee deep water however when we arrived at the ledge (03:00am) i felt a lot more comfortable as it was covered in grippy barnacles. the guys we were fishing with were oldschool and ganged pilchards with a sinker running to hooks proved to be a killer on the tailor. throughout the nigth i learnt many lessons on how to cast a 12ft rod, how to retrieve without getting snagged and how to watch for big waves. Watching the locals pull in tailor after tailor became annoying until i finally hooked onto a big greenback, cheers all around when it was landed. shark, rays and tailor were all that were caught until the sun started coming up and the salmon came on the bite. My friend noticed a large school of yakkas hanging around the rocks so to the confusion of the several locals that now occupied the ledge we began focussing on these. the guys we were fishing with gave us pleny of stick about catching such 'little fish' but they were about to eat their words once they saw how effective live yakkas were as bait. over the next few hours several large salmon were landed and many requests were made for us to catch them livies. At around 8:00 my massive live yakka goes off, then the line becomes weightless, i decide to leave it out just incase my yakka is still attached and sure enough it is. line screams from my reel and i go to tighten the drag only to realise that i had forgotten to loosen it from before so i settle into a game of tug and war with plenty of screaming runs. by now many people on the ledge have gathered around me and are calling it for a big kingy as its stripping drag off my spheros in big bursts. eventually the fish begins to tire and i know iv won the fight, as i start to lift the big fish out of the water excitement turns to laughter as we all learn that my kingy is actually a big salmon hooked cleanly through the tail. The salmon does prove to be my PB weighing 3kg after being blooded and measuring aprox 80cm long and as thick as my thigh. all thats left to do before we begin the long drive home is gut the fish and have a nice swim. its safe to say that i will be purchasing a 12ft rod, some cleats and be back on the rocks again in the near future.
  12. mate give rose bay wharf a go..
  13. If the tails are regularly being bitten off i think it is an indicator that there are tailor/leather jackets around as flattys can engulf big 7 inch plastics in a single gulp. that leads me to the most helpful piece of info i can give.. * when fishing plastics if you feel a small tap between flicks (not a bite, just a really light tap) it is often an indicator that a flatty has sucked in your plastic off the bottom but has not run off with it. when this happens i give a sharp strike instead of my usual plastic flick and most of the time i end up with a hook up. I find it takes a while to be able to detect this small tap but once you can recognise it you will find your right about 50% of the time. I think it also helps because if a flatty engulfs it and has it in his mouth a regular flick action can ust pull it back out of his mouth. just my 2c goodluck and tight lines. Jungle.
  14. oh yeah, it must be landbased and preferably a spot around harbour/ parra river. Cheers again!
  15. Hey gang. Many weekends i go squidding for bait throughout the week but tonight i have decided to try and keep some alive/fresh and go for jewies. I will have the squid by about 10:00 and was wondering if someone could fill me in on where the jewies are usually holding up around this time of year. any advice including on where to cast at the spot and any other tips would be greatly appreciated as I am looking to get my newbie mate onto a jew. I know there are plenty of guys with great knowledge on this topic so thanks in advance, Cheers guys. Dave.
  16. I reccomend using a 20lb braid over a mono underlay. everyone will have a different opinion on what brand to use..
  17. mate if your getting a workhorse of a real around the twinpower/sustain price range solely for breaming may i reccomend getting a 1000 size reel... if your after big flathead and the odd snapper or schoolie too then maybe 2500 is better. the smaller the reel = lighter weight = better for finess fishing such as breaming. just my 2 cents though.
  18. Sorry to throw a spanner in the works but have a look at a picture of a young yellowfin tuna and tell me what you think. Not looking to fire up rumours but i think i know what i saw on sunday evening zipping around darling point.. and with sightings reported in the hacking maybe could just be... or maybe i had one too many beers?
  19. I bought the same as my first boat with a school mate 6 months ago and its proving to be a decent fishing setup.. ends up costing more than you expect (we expected) but great fun.
  20. has anybody ever heard of fin being spotted in the harbour? Had 3 fish to 1m darting around a wharf in the eastern suburbs this afternoon that i can only identify from ID charts as yellowfin... could be another tuna but a distinct blue back with yellowstripe and black tail.. are there other tuna that go by this description?
  21. Hey guys, I am not sure where my fishing license has gone, it is a 3 year license and i have only had it about 6 months. could someone tell me how to replace it with a new slip or a card? cheers.
  22. Hey guys, Im going to miss out on a big summer of kingys this year because I am heading over to thailand, cambodia and laos. while i am over there i would like to do a fishing charter or two, hopefully around the koh samui/ koh phangan area. I was hoping there might be a raider who could point me in the right direction of a well operated charter company thats going to stretch my arms rather than just get me onto little reef pickers.. thanks guys, cya in 7 weeks. Regards, Dave.
  23. i just picked up a stradic 4000 in a combo for round 260 from a certain fishing store above a sport shop in the city.. i would assume that gofish would do you the best price possible though so shop around.
  24. I have to disagree with everyone here that has attacked the fisheries officers.. I was also pulled up by the same boat that day and checked... I had a fishing license but the other people on my boat did not.. they then explained that the 6 rigged rods (and 2 handlines) were more than i was allowed and had a chat to me about the rules, handed license information to the others in the boat and left us with a nice 'info pack' and a 'goodluck'. They recognised that the guests in my boat werent regular fishers and they chose to educate us rather then do a bit of fundraising. hat goes off to the officers as one of the guests on the boat said 'i should probably get a license now' and another , my girlfriend, is asking me about how much they cost to get.
  25. Hey guys, just spent the weekend in jervisbay learning to catch kingys from a pro, the main bait we used were slimeys.. I'm just wondering if someone could please tell me an area in which I can fnd some slimeys tomorrow morning. I'll be putting the boat In at rose bay so anywhere near there would be tops. Also if there's any particular technique that works best? Also where's a reliAble spot for plenty of yakkas? Cheers guys regards Dave
