Landlubber no longer...finally graduated with my first boat. Sportsman 232, Yamaha 250, brand spanking new....steep learning curve but bloody enjoyable!

Yeah the boat is an all rounder, family duties at Jibbon, Maianbar, Lilli Pilli sandbar etc, bit of towing donuts, and a bit of fishing. Good set up for that with 10 people capacity, lots of seating and a bow sunshade.

Couldn’t wait. Bought ; - Shimano Sedona XT (2-4kg) 7ft combo for the estuary...mostly soaking baits. - Saragosa 6000 & 7ft Raider Heavy Snapper rod and an Ugly stik gold 7ft 6-10kgs to be paired with existing Penn Spinfisher 6500 as “guest” rod. I’ll put an existing 20 years old never used Spinfisher 8500 on the 6’6 Silstar 10-15kg crystal blue power tip as the inshore trolling outfit See how we go.

Gday Guys, Finally graduated from “landlubber” status and very fortunate to have a 23ft Centre console on the way from the states. I am very keen on advice for rod/reel selection for the type of fishing I’ll be doing, out of Port Hacking and realize I’ll be looking at 2-3 different combos here. I am not necessarily looking for model numbers etc but more if I’m on the right track 1. estuary bait and soft plastics. I’m thinking 6-7ft, 2-4kg range and 2000-3000 series reel. Pretty straightforward. Really, considering bait runner for feeding line down berley trail, also flicking soft plastics. 2. Inshore kingfish and snapper. Live bait, stickbaits, bit of bottom bashing. 3. Inshore poppers, metals casting at surface action, eg Kings, small tunas, dolphins at the FADs. 4. Inshore trolling around headlands, Bombies etc for Kings and miscellaneous Is there a combo that works well for 2/3/4 above? does something like a 7ft “snapper” combo in the 5-8kg range do the job? Really appreciate input here, in addition to some light estuary gear all I’ve got is beach rods and a never used heavy jig rod and a 10-15kg 6ft spinning rod (bought for NQ) which I don’t think meet the brief.

Hi mate, if only a few of you want to fish and you want to do your own thing you can hire a tinny out of Shute harbour and muck around there for a day. Plenty of big stuff in the main channels, and quite fun on the cans in a small tinny

G'day Ilk, you can hire a tinny from Shute Harbour (15 mins from Airlie Beach) for the day - there is plenty of stuff on the bite...last year i was up there and went for an impromptu fish and got busted off a number of times on the 5kg handlines they give you with the boat. Next time i will bring my own gear

Gibbo - i can recommend SEA URCHIN which is a good platform and the dekkie is a top fisho. Have been on another boat there but nowhere near as good.

G'day Folks, Until now, most of my fishing has been soaking bait. I have caught a couple of good flatties landbased with SP's however have never had a dig from the boat. We are heading out this coming Saturday and was after a tip on suitable SP's to try in the bay for Trevs, Flatties and other miscellaneous piscatorial monsters we are likely to find. Also, just an idea on the best retrieve (slow retreive , jerk etc) to suit. Thanks for the tips lads, i am getting tired of buying bait so fingers crossed this works! Cheers Rob

Headed down to Como yesterday with the and the old man in tow.......tried a few spots for about 15 undersize whiting / flathead / snapper (28cm - almost! ) then the wind got up but all and all an OK day. However, this morning set off on what was to be an absolute fiasco We headed out to Port Hacking putting in at 6am at Swallow Rock, headed outside for a bit of a drift near Middle Ground.....1.5 hrs and the live poddies where not even sniffed at We got jack of that soon so headed up to SW Arm, buggered around in there for a couple of hours for some undersize snapper and bream. Then headed over to Willarong Point for a drift.....for nothing. Not even a bite ! Then to Mainbar, for more of the same........before going up to the Diversion wall for one small Whiting. What a fiasco, 8 hrs on the water for Zip. Conclusions (ie. what is to blame) 1. Poddy Mullet, nothing wants to eat them 2. Hummingbird sounder that doesnt work, the thing is an absolute nugget 3. Port Hacking, the whole system is a fished out hoax of a place 4. The Quintrex Sans Souci is a nugget of a boat and is evidently cursed 5. The fact that we (my cousin and i) are both absolute battlers with no clue I hope you blokes had a better couple of days!!!

Once word gets out that the mighty RAN is not empowered to deal with indos waving bamboo stakes how many of these fishing boats with $100K catches is going to be let themselves boarded? Further, with relation to the ongoing rape of our fish resources evidently Ronald has no capacity to assess the true value of recreational fishing - Particularly when we talk about estuary situations where there is large rec fishing pressure to begin with.....what purpose is served by allowing commercial fisherman net Jew for $6 bucks a kilo aside from finishing off our fish stocks and prolonging an unsustainable livelihood?

Good Suggestions Lads. There is nothing like seasickness to stuff up a day and have you looking the goose. I remember as a 12 year old being completely psyched for heading out with dad and one of his mates off durras for the day. As soon as we pull up, i catch a large sweep, which i was quite stoked about, 5 mins later i was starting the burley trail and wishing i was dead.....twenty mins later i was back on the ramp feeling sorry for myself. Of course dad and his mate came in about 7 hours later with bags or mowies, flatties and nannygai. Anyway, ever since i have been more than aware of the limits of my sea legs. I was nearly caught short the morning after an 8 hour lunch off Fremantle a few years ago. Ever since, i have been using Kwells with very good effect, up to about 3 metre swell in small craft.

G'day Crazed, Put in about 7 or so, headed straight out to Cap'n Cook, hung around for about 45 mins for a small chopper......some punter's 1972 chrysler outboard had packed it in so we gave him a tow back to tom ugly's ramp - but not even an offer of a six pack the bludger Anyway, seeing the new fish finder wasnt working just did a bit of drifting in front of the novotel for a good sized flattie, a 36cm whiting and piles of throw back size snapper. Not a bad night, we just have to get this fish finder working so the time can be spent more productively. Cheers Rob
