  1. How do the FAD's work ? - are they just a buoy with a long rope / chain to the bottom that attract small fish to feed off the growth on it ? Why dont people make their own and just leave them out there ? ( sorry if this is a silly question ... i dont know anything about them )
  2. Sorry if this is a stupid question .. but can you "build" structure at low tide to give fish a place to hide and hunt at high tide ? what i mean is .. if you started moving big heavy rocks to a certain spot and build a small wall of rocks into the surf at low tide, then cast towards your new man made structure at high tide - would it work ? Could be worth a try ..

  4. http://www.smh.com.au/environment/big-fish...90916-frq5.html The last sentence of this article got me a little worried .. In Summer - we water ski in the Georges .. are Bull Sharks scared of boats by any chance ?
  5. Great catches Interesting baits you use too! That flatty looks a little odd ?
  6. Hey thanks for all the replies Its just a Nokia N95 8GB phone camera! The red mullet / goat fish and Wrasse were too small to keep so i can report on the taste of them! We kept the big bream alive in a bucket til we got the boat ramp, mum had it cooking about 50 minutes later!
  7. Hey fellow raiders, First fishing report! Dad and i headed out into botany bay on saturday, we got on the water at 7:00am and the water was like glass!! - We trolled all the way from the end of the second runway, past molineaux point, in close and around bear island, out the heads and back in, along the south head wall - nothing! I had three lures out at different depths, a deep diver, a shallow diver and a metal/chrome lure just splashing about in the prop wash. So we pulled up just inside the south head and started fishing, First 2 fish we caught were tiddler bream, next one i caught was this : (Can anyone identify it ? - i've been told its a Nanygai ?) After that, i managed another 2 TINY bream Then i landed this : (Anyone know what it is ?) I then got ANOTHER 2 small bream and dad got his first bream for the day! (also tiny) So the score at this stage was Me 8, Dad 1 We then moved around the sand flats on the other side of the oil wharf - HEAPS of boats around there, First cast, i caught a small leather jacket - we stayed there for another half an hour and tried to drift, but the water was so calm that we didnt move anywhere! - We werent getting any bites and kept losing out bait to the weeds so we moved over to the sand infront of the novotel building - we anchored there and dad finally caught this to catch up : 28cm - Kept this one for mum for dinner We then headed over to molineaux point where i managed another 2 small leather jacket and dad got 2 small bream (throw backs) I put out a soft plastic and let the rock of the boat move it around - after 15 minutes i reeled in just the jig head! Bloody leatherjacket!! They they started biting out lines off above the sinkers so we called it a day and headed home with the one keeper bream for mum Final score : Me 12 throw backs (3 leather jacket, 1 red fish above, 1 colourful fish above, 7 tiny bream) Dad 4 Bream (3 throw backs, 1 keeper)
  8. Hello raiders! I hope everyone is looking forward to a long weekend of fishing!! Im heading into Botany bay this weekend in the boat and want to do some trolling In the past i've used a 1-2m deep Rapala lure and trolled along the runnways and into and around yarra bay which has in the past produced bonito and tailor. BUT! it was pure luck, because ever since i havent caught anything else the same way Is it worth trolling this time of year (colder water ?) i've read that the surface feeding fish feed deeper in the colder months ? also - how far out the back of the boat do you troll the lures? my theory has always been that the boat engine would scare the fish so i've been trolling them 60 - 80 meters back (lost A LOT of lures like this - speed boats coming flying along and spool both rods i have out) i read somewhere that you should have the lures JUST outside the 'third roll of the wake' ? is this for marlin / big game fishing or does it apply to smaller fish ? Is there any point in throwing out berley ? i would have thought you move away from it too quick to be any use ? (Speed of the boat is the slowest speed the motor will run at ) Any advice, trolling tips, lengths, etc would be greatly appreciated!! Looking forward to posting a report after the weekend ahead!!
  9. Thanks for all the replies so far. I think im going to have to do some more reading or maybe buy one of these soft plastic packs that come with a DVD - cause at the moment im just attaching a jig head to standard clear fishing line 6lb and hoping for the best. I dont understand the leader / mono / carbon fluro 2 meters of line ?? Do you buy another spool of line thats called "carbon fluro leader" and tie it on ? Is it stronger ? more transparent ? Thanks again for the tips! also - what size is too big for the jig heads ? What size should i be using ? I think at the moment im using a number 4 or number 6 (can check when i get home) - and they are alot bigger than a standard hook i would use if i was putting a prawn on a hook!
  10. Hey, thanks very much for the replies so far! No im not using any leader ? - should i be ? Im just attaching the jig head straight onto my 6lb line Also - which nets do you mean ? the ones at the end of Ramsgate St or the ones near 'Duke' street - closer to the Brighton le Sands Novotel ?? I went to buy some new plastics last night and all of the "berkley 'shad's" were sold out! Im assuming they're the ones to use .. all the reports i read of people catching flathead on soft plastics, they've used a 'shad' Thanks again! Much appreciated
  11. Hey Raiders, new to this forum - first post! look forward to posting many big fish and successful catches soon! I've been going down to Botany Bay ALOT lately and fishing off those man made rocks / breaks along the front of Brighton / Ramsgate etc .. But im just not having ANY luck at all I was wondering if someone might be able to help me with what im doing wrong ?? Im using a jig head and putting the plastic on correctly so it swims and thats it - no swivel, no sinker (assuming this is right?) Then im casting out into the deeper water, letting the waves and motion of the water carry the plastic in towards the shore a bit as well as reeling it in slow, flicking it Im just not having any bites or catching anything. Im targetting flathead, and im fishing from about 6:00 - 8:30pm as the sun is going down Is this the wrong time to be fishing ? Unfortunatly this is the only time i can fish Any advice ? I've included a picture that shows what im fishing off and generally where im casting (Yellow lines = where im casting from the rocks)
