  1. G'day all, Got up at 3.30 and managed to head out from Tunks by 430 this is the 3rd time for me lauching from tunks on the new boat so i was pretty excited to get some kings after all the positive reports. First task was to stock up on livies. Tried several locations for squid which ended nothing. Then headed to yakkas ground and couldnt get any. even tried anchoring at balmoral wharf and island for zilch. Had a look at few other boats and i couldnt see them pulling up yakkas too. ANyways by this time it was about 10. Very frustrated i tried little manly which produced some yakkas. Anyways soaked a livie on a bean sinker and put one down on the downrigger. Then i noticed something on with the bean sinker livie. Not sure what happend, either he swam close to the prop or bad luck but ended up catching the line with my prop. Now sitting on the transom and getting wet by waves managed to free the line but lost the tackle. Then i continued downrigging and just got to old mans hat and by now the water was like a washing machine, started feeling ill and called it quits. Headed to the wedding cakes and there must be 20 boats. It was too packed. Sounded to clifton gardens but nothing showed up. So i caught nothing, though i did manage to have a decent run bottom bashing but lost the fish due to bad knots, maybe i was too tired. Anyways didnt catch anything worth mentioning. How did everyone else go?
  2. Hey congrats on the boonnies! I just bought some xmas trees, so will be placing them out this weekend. How far do you have them out? do you have them in the wash and how fast would you be going? I heard you place them in the wash at a speed of 8 knots.. i tried xraps too, got the white but havent had any success on them... oh by the way, people always seem to go at 1st light, are there people who like to go later? Whats the strategy? any different?
  3. cheers mike very insightful. Hopefully i can post some pics of kings soon
  4. Hi Guys I'm still a newbie to the new setup, havent used the downrigger and the live bait well as yet... but definitely going out at 3pm makes it hard. But nonetheless i'm going to try until i get one. I've seen some minor bust ups but only chopper tailors, got one and thought i'll get more , which ended up in the freezer, probably jew bait or crab bait when i get the opportunity but Kings and Jews are on my priorities. I'm really liking the 4 stroke, it was super fuel efficient and lack of smoke as you get from a 2 stroke. I motored for about 3hrs and the fuel tank was still full! So easy to clock up hours but have scheduled for a full service just in case there are things worth fixing. Though do you guys have a reliable boat mechanic around Sydney north or Parra regions? For my motor i got quoted $440 for a major service from an independent boat mechanic that works from his house and has a day job, presumably mechanic too.. but i havent checked his name is David Vassallo, try googling if interested. Also i know that fresh squid fillets are top bait for kings, do you guys just do a skinny fillet say a 2 cm wide strip of the hood and no sinker and just let it sink for kings? And how do you hook up the bait? just one hook through the tip of a fillet? Cheers Sid
  5. hey just a question, how do you put on the squid. Whats the dimension of the squid approx... do you have them thick? Also would you use a sinker? rig type?
  6. went out late around 3pm just for the sake of going out on my newly purchased tinny, anyways conditions were ok some overcast and possible light showers.... launched at roseville.. I thought the ramp was pretty awesome, just a little slippery but pretty easy peasy. The water to the spit bridge was super nice, really flat so opened the 50 4 stroke yamaha, the thing went up to 38kms with 350kgs + gear... felt pretty mad! 1st spot we tried the wreck at northbridge for heap of squires. So we moved on to the spit for some trolling and through to to north head just before blues point for nutta. Then we bottom bashed for a bit but got sargent bakers. So how did everyone else go today?
  7. looks like fun.....ever fallen off the yak?
  8. Sounds like a perfect day! Good on ya, dollies are great fun. quite generous at giving tips too.
  9. was this caught land based or off a boat? And what time of day was it when you caught it
  10. Its Friday and most people would anticipate for a fish over the coming weekend. WIth the cold and grey clouds, who is still game? Anybody braving it out this weekend ??? If so what's your plan of attack?
  11. Fishing in the Rain this weekend?

  12. Dear Fishos, Keen to start on another type of fishing, that is the Surf / Beach fishing. Though I must admit, sand in reels and cold water meeting you at knee height is inevitable and given that winter is approaching is something that have turned me off beach fishing for a while. Brrrrrrrr but man up they say! However last fishing trip was had by the beach and my 11ft was out gun by my mates 16ft, coupled with big surfs I was put off by it and didn't even wet the line. Though my mind ponders when I see my mate rig up, big slabs of slimy and yellow tail and the alluring talks of big jews had me thinking. This was enough for me to get researching. So after spending a good 4 hrs browsing for an affordable <= $200 mark I was left with the Penn Prevail. Firstly have you guys heard much about these rods? The web for once haven't provided much insight to this as well. Apart from this are there any other suggestions from fellow fish raiders with beach fishing experience. As said, I would like to catch big ( who doesn't right) but something versatile is always appreciated but that said, big fish setup is probably going to set you up for that and therefore the target of whiting / bream / flathead is probably an overkill on a 14ft rod paired with 14000 reel. All advice welcome. Thanks for reading Tight lines
  13. Does it get any bigger? LOL Well done!
  14. Congrats BTW on 1st Jew catch - i remembered mine around the 80cm mark on frozen prawns as a bycatch to whiting/breams/flathead. And unfortunately still need to beat that so know the feeling. However can someone tell me how to much bait to 'slab' on for jew bait. Is it a gang hook setup? if so how much bait? Is it a long thin strip? say 3cm by 15cm? similar to a pillie? or is it bigger than that with 2 double hooks? Is it a running sinker or a patternoster? (hmm confused are they the same?) Any tips is appreciated. Still a beginner when it comes to the beach. Cheers
  15. And you caught it using a popper! Mate you must be a pro! or you know what you're doing. I recently bought a saragossa 14000 for LBG kings - yet to purchase a rod. Do you have any suggestions, I want to go off the stones and throw stick and poppers and maybe livies too. Weather, lack of balls, lack of time and lack of motivation or skill slowed me down in the quest. And i guess without a rod doesnt help. So far i have tried 30lb on stradic 5000 but havent seen a king follow or bite or anything. LOL. Funny but i'm in the persistance space and hopefully i can get a king of LBG soon I have high hopes for the sara, jigging, trolling for tuna and other big pelagics - but need a boat and save for a home loan, new job to earn more etc etc etc. Ah - such as life Tightlines
  16. My dad would catch them on handline back in the days and was very successful. Actually got addicted to catching and all he used back then was a frozen prawns and a long shank which caught everything. I just did a quick google and seem people reports biggest around 40cms. I now wish we took photos and measurements as proof... He caught heaps and they were monsters and 60cms is no exaggeration. One day i will try for them again but the waterways are not like they were. (sound like a 90 yo man) but it's true. Tight lines
  17. Simple, if you see illegal fishing happening then make a call to the local authorities. Tools spoil it for everyone. I encountered these tools before, they turn the place upside down and leave debris and rubbish
  18. I'm surprised the 30lb held up, good on you.
  19. Just curious, over 20 years ago, my dad would pull up whiting over 60 cms some even bigger. Have you guys experienced such catch? Needless to say i havent seen these sizes since. Cheers
  20. How does one net such thing? Were you prawning or something? Was it alive? this thing looks premature in development and death.. unless you have a pic when it was alive? If i had to guess it would be an eel
  21. Hi All, Hope you all have had a nice new year day and xmas break! As one could imagine with a few days of public holidays and the fantastic weather we've been getting, it would be crazy not to take advantage and have a flick. Headed towards Brisbane waters, we hired a BBQ boat for the day, with a few mates, some hawkesbury prawns, we headed around the bay for some fishing and BBQ. After finding a nice bay, we anchored and fired the BBQ for some breaky. There were other boaties around, doing the same and i saw a guy just catching a nice size lizzard. So i knew the SP lure would do well, at my 2nd cast i caught myself a small lizard, he was thrown back. And by the 5th cast i was onto a nice model, he came up about 44 cms. The day pretty much was spent motoring around surrounding bays and doing the same. We had a great feed and caught a few more lizzards and whitings. We caught 6 lizzards all up, they ranged from 40 to 48 cms. It was a great day and most caught on lures. PS - dont forget to slip slop slap, i didnt realised how burnt i was until i saw myself in the mirror that night. Even though it's overcast, UV can still be damaging. Tight lines Sid
  22. Thanks for the support guys- hopefully we all can do our bit and i'll definitely try and pick up after others from now. Tight lines Sid
  23. Hi All Like all Australians and generally human beings, we enjoy the gifts the sea provides whether it be fishing or enjoying recreational activities. And like all Australians, we care about the environment and would like to enjoy our activities for years to come and be able to share this wonderful world of ours for generations to come. But more often the case not enough is being done and i guess my intent is to increase awareness and do our bit to keep our waterways clean. I'm not stating anything new here but i guess just be mindful that our world is at the mercy of humans and how we treat it. I'm a landbased angler and like most anglers witness a lot of debris and rubbish along our coast lines and have personally witnessed disrespectful individuals polluting our waterways. I'm not sure how you guys feel when you rock up to your favorite spot and realised it's littered with rubbish. I personally hate it and question the quality, safety and health concerns if we were to consume anything from it. Can i bring your attention to this article http://www.trueactivist.com/gray-whale-dies-bringing-us-a-message-with-stomach-full-of-plastic-trash/ My request is to bring this to the attention of FR members and do our bit to keep it our environment clean and be responsible for our actions cause the consequences of our inaction could be disasterous for our world tomorrow.. Can i ask you guys do the same? If we see rubbish in out waterways, lets do ourselves a favour and remove it, and if you see anyone polluting our waterways, maybe kindly tell them not to or report to the authorities. Something needs to be said to change our mind, lets do our bit for this world. Thanks for reading and Happy Xmas and New Year Tight Lines
  24. love to get some on lures! Good on ya
