In my opinion, if you want a rugged 4WD that you will not pamper much in way of maintenance and servicing I would go with Daiwa, but if you are after a Ferrari that needs garaging, washing and servicing I would go with Shimano. (This especially refers to Saltiga vs Stella range)

Great report mate, Cherish the gear you got cause when that ring gets blessed for some reason the rod and reel purchasing really slows down

I got the Saragosa and she is a great jigging reel, I think only advantage on the more expensive Twinpower or the Stella is mainly weight. When you are jigging all day long those couple of hundred grams make a difference

I never knew that rule guys, thanks for the heads up, I suppose they are worried that with 300m of braid on board you could end up tying up passengers or go on a strangling spree, but I suppose 250lb rated shoe laces are OK

I might go with your suggestion on using 'C' on my next rod, Rodworks have a nice lathe with a precision headstock on sale and am very tempted in getting one, any suggestions as to who may stock lathes for starting out at a reasonable price would be appreciated also. From what I understood from a pro rod builder was that 'A' size thread is used for heavier rods and all game rods, the reason behind it is because its a thinner line and you get more winds and that actually increases strength, but then again I could be wrong, I have only just started out on rod building and used 'A' size thread on a jewie rod I just built as recommended by the pro. I am pretty sure on the Doc Ski DVD he uses 'A' size on all his Tuna rods.

Hey Raiders, Just received the best birthday present ever !! I Just got my hands on a new Daiwa Saltiga SPARTAN Rod. What the hell is that you ask ? Well here is the lowdown. This rod is limited, from what I have heard only 50 have been brought in by Daiwa Australia. It is not advertised anywhere and it is only supplied to serious tackle suppliers. My particular model is the 63-S - 6'3'' One piece Jigging rod MADE IN JAPAN from a combination of carbons. Apparently it has broken world records in the way the blank is wound It is rated at 60lb (YES, 6 foot 3 inched jigging rod rated at 60lb) Weighs 310 grams Up to 210 gram jigs but i personally think it will handle 300 no worries. It comes in a beautiful leather like soft case - AWESOME !! I held the rod and was loaded up, the torque this rod produces is something I have never seen before. Have you ever wandered how such small frame asian girls pull in Monster fish in Lord Howe Island all day long and don't struggle, I have and this this rod justifies it all for me, it is tippy but when push come to shove it takes full control of the situation. This rod proves that it's all about gear and techniques, Not brute strength when it comes to jigging, it takes alot of the work out of your battle. The chequer work in reel seat is awesome, it is like a Carbon Fibre finish. This will be paired up with a Daiwa Saltiga Z4500 and it will be the ultimate Combo. I will try and get some photos up soon of the workmanship in this rod. Not sure for what they retail for exactly but from what I am hearing at the moment they are betweem $900-$1000 but as they get scarce I am sure some retailers will slap a $1200 + price tag on it. Anyone who knows about this rod and isn't sure if they should get one, believe me you will regret it later on if you miss out. A mate of mine just scored a C14 2500 for $319 delivered. They are an awesome reel, super smooth well balanced and very light. The size of the reel is more like an in between of a normal Stradic 1000 and 2500. I definately have one on my to do list, I would like to see what the 1000 looks like, it would probably be more like a 750. ( yeah i know there is no such size but in comparison to a 2500 it would prob be smaller that a normal stradic 1000)

Guys, May I suggest you head out on a charter first with a pro and see what jigging is all about. Also, hit the gym for a few weeks or you will be sore for days like I was after my first ever jigging session A reasonably priced setup that I started with was a Shimano Saragosa 18000 reel with a T-Curve Deep Jig 400 rod, it is a well matched setup and performs exceptionally well. Ring your local tackle shop and get advice as to what jigs you should use, some are easier to work than others, different weighted jigs require different retrieval action (e.g. centre weight, tail weight jigs) Good luck, be careful it is very addictive
