    Fishing Bloopers

Wouldn't you hate being the company sponsoring him for his rods....
  5. What a strange coincidence in the timing of this post. I just got back from a week of fishing with my old man up at Swansea. We had setup for a night of chasing tailor with two light outfits (4000 series reels and 10lb line) and one overhead reel with 30lb line. It wasn't long until we got hit and boated some nice 40cm+ tailor. After a bit everything went quite then one of the light rigs went off with an amazing "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ". This thing was going fast, I grabbed the rod and tried to set the hooks, it kept going without missing a heartbeat...then nothing. So I retrieved the line and amazing the bait looked perfect, no marks at all. Must have hooked a submarine I said as surely the bait would have had so damage to it after a run like that. A couple of minutes later the second rod goes off, same story as before, this time my old man grabs the rod, insisting that he could land a submarine . This time instead of jerking the rod to set the hooks he slowly tightens the drag. This in no way slowed the "ZZZZZZZZZ", after a 150m of line went off the reel once again it was let go and the bait still in tact. While this was all happening the big 30lb overhead was sitting there silent. Third time lucky i said, before casting out I tightened the drag up almost all the way, (I will stop this thing i said). Didn't have to wait long till the magic ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, was off again..... This thing was fast, I waited until half the spool was gone and i tapped the spool to stop it rotating..... SUCCESSS I had actually hooked the sucker . Then bang off it went again, I hadn't even had a chance to rotate the handle on the reel. Several seconds later I was broken off and 180m+ of line to retrieve. WHAT WAS THAT ???
  6. Hey Paul, Since your a fellow westie I will give you some pointers. As always it depends what your after but Juno Point and the reefs off Flint and Steel always produce something for me. Juno can get crowded with the boats going for the Jews, so if the tide and wind are playing nice together doing a drift between Juno and Flint maybe the go. Cheers, Stephen
  7. Ok Guys, Putting a minnkota on the Hornet 445 and it has became very clear that space for the Deep Cycle battery is an issue. The battery by itself is fine, however it would be nice incase the battery leaks to put it in a battery box. This is where the trouble is, with all the battery boxes I have looked at they wont fit or take up too much room. Any ideas people ?? This must be a common problem.......maybe?? Thanks Guys
  8. Ahhh, thats where my Black Honda Civic ended up......
  9. Narra, plan ahead next time. Should have told the Mrs that the leccy cost some more $$ but came with a free sounder !! I'm a bad person I know
  10. Well picked up the new boat with the old man and decided to take it for a spin, we were too excited not to. Up the Nepean we went with grins a mile wide ! After an hour of cruising around and checking that we weren't slowly sinking the decision was made to test all the gear we had bought over the last five weeks. (A tip, when buying a boat add a couple a hundred onto the price, Because the wait drives you crazy and the only relief is buying new gear !!) So we pick a likely spot with the falling sun and it was lures in the water. At this stage I should tell you that my sister came along for the ride so we also packed the old rod and reel for her. First cast and the sister gets a big hit but doesn't hook up. The grins grew with the excitement that the boat will get its first fish today and possibly be quite big. With the slight breeze pushing us away from our target reeds, Dad and i pulled out the paddles to get us back to where we wanted to be. (Dear Santa, can you please bring me a Minn Kota so I can atleast feel sensation in my arms again) While the hard work was being done by the men, the sister yells out "I have a fish !!!" So the cry goes out in excitement for the net and the realisation that the new boat has its first fish on the oldest gear and the $2 lure. By the time we get things sorted the sister has landed the fish. So we take a look at the fish, she is proud as punch, we are....... well...... take a look at the picture .. In the end the river is full of Bass and a little Bass with big eyes. We had plenty of fun and the quinnie 445 is a dream to drive and a absolute pleasure to fish from. We are off to the Hawsbury at Windsor this weekend to hopefully prove that we can catch something bigger than the lure we are using.
  11. 100 % right about it being a Blind shark, also called a Brown catshark (well by my old man anyway). The two nasal barbels and pale spots give it away. Strange you caught it during the day, they usually only feed at night...
  12. For those who don't know ... THE NEW BOAT ARRIVES ON TUESDAY..... The new toy is a Quintrex Hornet Trophy 445.....

    Swansea Boat Ramps

Hey Bluecod, There is a 1 3/4 lane concrete ramp in the suburb of Pelican, which is still classifeid as in the channel but close enough to be in the lake. The ramp is right next to a popular "swimming beach" and park area, if you could call it that. So each side of the ramp is sand so beaching the boat and parking the car makes it a great solo launching ramp. Parking is only a problem when summer picks up as all the families go there picnics and stuff. As for security, we never had problems when we used ramp. Djmac might be able to provide some current info on the security subject. A map always helps....
  18. Basserman a good looking bass you have there. I also noticed that Sounder up the front deck, great idea! Where have you placed the transducer?
  19. Glad to see that the Big Bass are moving up the river... Think it's time for some bass hunting !!
  20. Still patiently waiting for the new boat to arrive, two weeks in andgetting very restless. Oh why didn't we buy a second hand boat So I might head down to ABA and check out a saltwater spinning combo... Stephen
  21. Twinfisher, Used to do ALOT of prawning from the boat when the parents owned a caravan up at Swansea. So the info is old but probably still valid. Everyone used to to prawn at the end of the airport in the lake around the deep holes. This of course got very crowded very quick after dark. We found that we got just as many prawns by setting up about 100m the ocean side of the bridge in the channel on the Blacksmith Beach Caravan Park side. If you have got a depth sounder set your self up downstream of any large holes. This should also help the fishing aspect. We found the trick was having the lights not too bright because this tends to scare the prawns more than it helps spot them. Stephen

    Here We Are..

Thanks Guys, Main reason why it took so long to post was simply because of the amount of reading I have been doing when researching boats and motors. Now that is all sorted you will never shut me up. As soon as it is in the water I will grab some pics and post them up... Lightweight, After much reading and getting peoples opions we went with the 4 stroke Yammie. The 60 HP option was not totally based on the speed but the fact it has to move two big blokes around on the water. Stephen

    Here We Are..

Hey Everyone, Well after many years of being boatless and ristricted to land fishing my father and I have taken the plunge and bought a new boat. After countless hours of reading your posts and Ken's great advice via email we purchased a new Quintrex 445 Hornet Trophy with a 60hp Yammie. The long 5 week wait begins until its arrival. I just want to say thanks and my appreciation of your past posts which answered alot of our questions without us even having to ask. Hopefully now that we have joined this site my father and I can add to the quality of the info on this site..... Or we could just get DRUNK.... Stephen...
