  1. Yeh +1 for it being MUCH more dangerous than avoca. Avoca is alot lower to the water, and fair amount of people have lost their lives there. If the same amount of people fished Winnie bay i guarantee you there'd be alot more deaths. Although its high up and can be fished in larger swells than Avoca, it makes it alot more dangerous IMO. Theres no angel ring and nobody patrolling it, like there is at avoca beach. Winnie has claimed its fair share of lives, if you fall/slip in and swell is not favorable you are in big BIG trouble. I consider myself a decent swimmer and i honestly think if there was decent swell and i couldn't make it back on the rocks further around, i wouldn't be able to make the swim to avoca/copa. It is a good spot to fish, but can't handle anywhere near the numbers of avoca. As already said, if theres a couple of cars up the top than its gonna be tough getting a spot. IMO avoca fishes better, you just need to get down there earlier to setup and get a spot. Also getting out in the week helps!
  2. Missed yesterdays but todays was a cracker. Kings off the rocks was awesome!!!
  3. This! I'm not 100% sure if its the same brand I've got, but they're great. They're like "ice climber" shoes, they look way overkill but they're the best piece of kit i've bought for rock fishing. I wear the neoprene boots, without the spikes. I think you get them for about $30- 50 from %%% or pretty much any fishing/water sports place. I walk out to the platform with my neoprene boots on (beauty is they can get wet, and you're not left with wet socks on all day), when things start to get a bit slippery or i reach the rocks, just simply slip the spikes over. They're ridiculously easy to put on and take off and conform to pretty much any shoe. The rock boots with spikes are good, but the problem is within 6 months of solid use the spikes are almost ground down to nothing, and spending $70-80 every 6-12 months really adds up.Then say if you're walking a bush track you're gonna wanna take two pairs of shoes adding more stuff to take.
  4. Hey Witha, i think either way you go you're gonna be happy. If you're a bit worried about the breaking strain of the 10lbs don't be, as I've seen some say it breaks well above its breaking strain. http://www.paulusjustfishing.com/4linetesting.htm this bloke does line testing, 10lb power pro broke on average at 17lb. You'll be able to handle any flathead on 10lb(especially if it does break well above its stated strain). As far as jewies go i've never caught one! haha, but alot of the youtube videos on fishing for jew in estuaries they're only using bream stlye gear, as aslong as there's no structure for them to bust you off, you're in with a good chance. I've got 3lb powerpro and the stuff breaks well and truly above 3lb.
  5. Yeh +1 on the unweighted pillie. Sometimes they can be fussy/cautious and wont want to commit to the lure. Happened alot of time to me, see a bunch of kings in close off the rocks and throw everything at them and they don't wanna commit to it. A simple pilchard lobbed in and instant hookup.
  6. Thanks Witha! glad you like it mate! Just did a bit of an update, now has some fishing tips implemented! Click on the fish icon at the top and you can swipe between the tips. Press the back button on your phone to get out of it. Update should come through in the next 24 hours. Let us know if you have any problems guys or suggestions. Only really been able to test on my phone and my old mans!
  7. Started working on implementing some fishing tips! So far its coming along nicely, expect an update within a few days!!
  8. Cheers thanks Frank, you're pretty much the first person to give me feedback other than the missus haha! Just checked and Kurnell is in there listed under Botany Bay! Also a very good idea on relating it to fishing, i was thinking about incorporating some fishing tips in there but just haven't got around to it. That and to be honest i don't focus a whole lot about moon phases and fishing ( except new moon for prawning) as i go when i can. Though i know some jewie fishos have different favourite moon phases. In the next update expect a little fishing tip being given relating to tide heights and moon phases (and how they effect tide heights, whens the highest high tides/lowest low tides etc). Thanks again mate!
  9. Alright fishos just thought I'd share the android application I've made as a side project/hobby during uni. Pretty much my interests are computers and fishing, so i wanted to combine them together and heres the result! Tides NSW Visit/Download here Features: View tide times, heights and lunar information for most popular NSW estuaries, 5 days at a time! Easily view any date up until July 1st, 2014. Simple, easy to use, no nonsense Tide application. Its free and for android, there is a paid version (99cents) which just doesn't have ads (and will have more features soon!) If this is in the wrong section or against the rules please just move/delete thread. Would love to get some feedback ! also any requests for locations I'm more than happy to add in. Cheers!
  10. I'm not familiar with the location, but have a go at catching beach worms! its fun and really is an art, pretty tough but they're a gun live or dead bait (put in metho, roll in sand then freeze). I think catching the worms is harder than catching the whiting though
  11. Definitely the Paternoster! Get a much better cast as the weight is at the end of the rig. If braid i join my braid to leader, then connect to a swivel, then 2 dropper loops spaced apart and a star sinker on the end. I generally go a surf popper on one dropper, and a 6/0 hook on the other with half a pillie. or two 6/0s or gang hooks etc. The beauty is its very easy to change. Also get some salted pillies or salt your own, stay on much better!
  12. cheers thanks mate, our boats are pretty much spot on. Mine was also a runabout with the windscreen but i only recently ripped it out because itd seen better days. Did you use just plywood or marine ply? cheers.
  13. Anyone got any ideas of the best way to put a false floor in this old tinny, it has 3 bench seats each at different heights. would like a flat floor maybe from the second seat to the bow. how would you go about it? Don't have much coin for a new boat, but looking for a cheapish way on turning this into a decent boat! cheers.
  14. The tiagras are Shimanos top of the line game reel, not sure on pricing but i think anywhere from $700 - 1000+ depending on what size you get. The difference is the tiagra is a complete aluminium frame (not graphite), better gearing & drag system and well a very nice piece of equipment. I dont see why you wouldnt be able to land a marlin on a TLD50, but you may also get smoked. thats fishing!
  15. Well if you intend on getting into it big, but you can only afford one at the moment. I guess it wont really hurt whichever you chose first. If i was you id get a TLD30 and load it with 30lb or 40lb mono(you should fit atleast 500metres of 15kg line on it). a rod around the 7-9ft mark, depends on which rock platforms you go off i guess. And just use that to float livebaits such as yakkas out for kings or big salmon. the TLD30 i think has 15kg drag. Realistically for most fish that should do the job. there will always be one thatll get away no matter what gear your using, and i see it better to have a bit more sport in it going a bit lighter. I seem to have a bit more luck flicking 65g raiders for stuff like big salmon, tailor, bonito and smaller sized kings 60-65cm kings, i just have a 9ft starlo stix with a 4000 sized Shimano Saros spooled with 10lb stren microfuse and that handles them with ease. A lure throwing combo is another thing id get, i mean it gets boring while you wait and have a bait out under a float. While thats out you can be chucking lures around and Doubling your chances of catcing anything and make your fishing alot funner aswell. Whatver you decide to get youll enjoy it, just get a good quality rod & reel and youll enjoy using it, best off to spend good $$$ once as your combo will last you awhile! EDIT: also as yeeros said if its marlin you intend on targetting then forget about the TLD30.
  16. Hmmm i guess it depends on preference, and what sort of fishing youd be done. TLD30 would be better for livebaiting off the rocks, easy to feed line/float/baloon out, and with a knock of the lever you kick it into gear! also alot more line capacity. I like to have a couple of combos off the rocks, a TLD25 on an LBG style rod for livebaiting, putting a yakka under a float. Also might use a baitrunner 6500 and do the same. And a spinning combo for spinning metal lures/plastics or whatever. The spheros are tough reels, with 20kg drag. and youd be able to cast them much better. What sort of fish are you targetting, what sort of methods eg lures/livebaiting? etc
  17. thanks for the reply everyone, went out this morning got nothing! ended up heading in after about 2 hours as it was blowing a gale. Bought a whole mullet, had 3 handlines and found that the peckers tore apart the fillets too easy and there was only skin left. The head stayed on good, and i was just sitting back when i heard something pull it really sharply, started winding and found the mullet head was about 30 metres away from where i dropped it (top of the tide, no current) and the mullet head was pretty much eaten whole with a giant chunk out of it. not sure what it was, big flatty? whatever it was it hit it hard. But all in all, no crabs . gonna try again soon when weather comes good, this time gonna just use mullet heads and try some chicken neck, as the mullet fillets were getting cleaned up.
  18. Yeah mate Travacalm seem to do it for me, also have a good brekky before you head out. and take a couple big packets of chips, burger rings, twisties, salt n vinegar chips etc. and munch on them every now and then, for me that makes a hugeee difference. some coke and some water aswell, as with the Travacalm i seem to get a real dry mouth. But keep those stomach acids working, and dont go out on an empty stomach and have a travacalm before going out, and one while out and youll be sweet hopefully!!
  19. Sunline FC ROCK when im using say 20lb, or anything like that off the rocks. I like to use V-hard 7lb/10lb (i think its also a sunline product) when breaming, great leader never had any problems with it!
  20. what sorta retrieve do you guys use for kingys off the rocks with the poppers? Do you actually work the popper with the rod much, or is most of it winding in? On some of the tv shows when the chucking poppers at gt's it looks like there just winding the thing in as fast as they can.
  21. Hey all, i know theres already a blue swimmer topic, but im after some information on people that are fishing for them, not trapping them. I fish the brisbane waters (central coast NSW) and in brissy waters, traps and witches hats are banned, so gonna have to try and do it by the books. So anyway today i went out, bought a couple of handlines and planning to go either tommorrow or tuesday for a fish for some blue swimmers. Just wondering do you use a running sinker straight to the hook, or a sinker to swivel then say 50cm of trace? and just anchor up in a likely spot and sit and wait for awhile? Would i be best to use half a mullet as bait on a big hook? mullet strips? Im guessing i need something hardy, but not sure if a bait is "too big" for blue swimmers?, ive also heard chicken necks are great to use? Also is tide a big factor, when its on turn? run in or run out? Any help on fishing for them would be great, or even spots would be better! but just keen to learn how to target them properly using handlines? Thanks alot fishraiders
  22. While i'm not much of a blackfisher, i do like fishing off the rocks and dont mind going for the odd drummer as such. If you're going off the rocks, i would go for mono every day of the week. Just use vasoline on the line for it to float, or theres even mono line now that floats i know sunline has a product called TopFloat. floating monofilament line. If you get busted off, you don't need to keep tying the braid to mono for leaders, its just alot less hassle. plus the lack of stretch can pull hooks sometimes, however braid is sensational for feeling the most subtle bites. But off the rocks id stick with mono!
