  1. I think I know the kind of sinker that you are talking about. I've attached a picture of one. They are widely used in the UK for beach fishing. The spikes anchor the bait/rig in sandy and flat bottom areas with strong currents but the same spikes also can cause you to get snagged up and you end up loosing your gear. You can also occasionally end up having to work hard just to bring your rig in to check your bait cause the sinker is completely fouled up with kelp or weed gathered up by the spikes. If you are looking for a mould then there should be 4 small holes in the bottom of the mould through which you thread the spokes. You have to bend the spikes to get the mould off then. Good luck in finding a mould!! I've never seen one in any tackle shop here. Needless to say you should be very careful when casting these beasties!!
  2. While out fishing North Head my mate and I had a 'minor emergency' and required we abandon a chunk of our valuable fishing time and find a remedy asap. We thought about going around to Manly but we were unsure about if we could use any of the wharfs there so we retreated back the marina at the Spit. My question is does anybody know if it is possible for us fishos to use any of the Wharfs at Manly?
  3. I found it. It was a toad fish. Damn! There a photo of one on another post in this section.
  4. Thanks for the clues but not even close I'm afraid. I've already checked the Australian Fisherman's Companion, Coral Reef fishes of the Indo-Pacific & Caribbean guide, The Australian Museum website and Raider's Aquarium section. I might have to do a sketch cause this is a toughie.
  5. I caught a wonderfully golden coloured fish at the Spit 2 weeks ago around 3 a.m. and I've been searching hard to ID the fish ever since. It looked like a stumpy version of a Port Jackson with a similar style head and mouth under the head as if it was a bottom feeder. The head was about 15 cm from the mouth to the brow and it was about 45 CM to the tail. The skin was the same kind that a PJ has except it was a beautiful golden colour all round and had no distinguishing stripes, spots or markings. Its side profile was like a wedge shape (think of a door wedge) and the fins were quite small. I'm afrid I don't have a picture of this fish but please can somebody give me some clues in IDing the fish. Cheers, Pete
  6. Kings on light gear are always great fun. Were you dropping the jigs to the bottom or somewhere midwater?
  7. If I'm not mistaken then its not adviseable to eat crabs from the harbour.
  8. Does anybody know about the El Nina effect and if this has anything to do with the cold water temperatures?

  21. Collaroy beach south of the pool around to fishermans beach should be sheltered by Long Reef. I doubt there'll be any boats using the slip ramp so you'll have the pick of the area.
