  1. I would imagine it would be fine out of a kayak. I am only saying this because I have a similar setup that I cast/retrieve land based to catch Bonito successfuly, now the speeds that I retrieve at I would imagine are similar if not slower to that of a kayak. With the pink squid skirt, the following thread got me onto it: Cheap Trolling Lures + Techniques Hope that helps.
  2. +1 for the "Pink Squid Skirts". I personally tried these over summer, and they seem like a very well rounded lure. Almost everything went for it.
  3. Welldone, sounded like a fun afternoon. Tailor can be heaps fun to catch.
  4. Not sure, but I think you will notice the bait not sliding down because one part of it is on the line and the other is on the hook. The top part of it shouldn't slide down past the eye of the hook. Then again, I have never tried this particular rig, but have tried similar stuff before.
  5. Thanks for the responses. So basically when I am targeting larger fish with decent bait, it's not a bad option. How about Live bait, can the circle hook be used for live baiting? Say a yakka?
  6. +1 for Shimano Sienna. I love shimano, so I always promote it. However, you will notice that the Shimano ax4000fb will have a cheap feel to it.
  7. So are the hooks as effective tho as the normal ones? And by saying they hook the fish, does that mean when I get a bite, I let it sit there until the fish is hooked?
  8. Crazy fish, catch of a lifetime! welldone!
  9. I was reading a post earlier about advice on catching an Australian Salmon, and one of the members suggest using the "Double-Pinch Method of Baiting Strip-Baits on Circles" for catching Salmon. I attached this photo to illustrate what the "Double-Pinch Method......" really is, as I had no clue until I googled it. But my question is, when would be a good time to use it, and for what fish, and what baits, etc? Also what is the advantage of using a circle hook? I have never really use a circle hook and managed to do ok but don't mind trying something different.
  10. I like that idea with practicing the knots; I have a crap load of braid leftovers and just feel bad for simply throwing it out.
  11. As PRED-ATOR said regarding the float. I have used a float with a pilchard on gang as bait when the tailor were going crazy in Lake Illawarra, and managed two 2.5kg Tailors. Good fun. Also been cut off a few times, so I guess wire trace would help out.
  12. Wow, some amazing catches here. Mine wasn't as epic but very memorable. My First kingfish was 75cm on 12lb mono line and 12lb mono leader.
  13. Thanks for the response, very helpful. Ye, I am participating in the "Bonito As Bait" thread too. I suppose I don't mind freezing the whole fish and preparing it while I am out fishing, but sometimes when you go for a night fish at the beach trying to target jewies, I always imagined it to be easier if I simply have the fillet ready for the hook.
  14. Thanks for the information on salting fillets; I will have to try it now. Should be much cheaper than the bait shops. In terms of effectiveness, I have used the salted ones before and they worked wonders. I have never really used it to target larger fish (kingfish, Jewfish, etc) but I know it produced for me some large Bream.
  15. In regards to freezing the salted fillet. How long can it be kept frozen before it's no good? And also, how long does it normally take to salt the fillets (i.e. couple of days, hours, etc)? Cheers
  16. When I catch slimies, bonitos, etc. I usually take them home and freeze them to be used as bait every time I go fishing. My question is, and to make life somewhat easier. Can I fillet them when I get home before throwing them in the freezer? If I freeze the fillets does that wreck the integrity of the bait? I usually freeze the entire fish and then fillet it when I am about to use it as bait, but normally this results in me sitting there and waiting for it to defrost a bit.
  17. My mates always go to a place called Fitzroy Falls and seem to always catch carp with the occasional other fresh water species. I went once for a drive there to check it out (I have never freshwater fished, but would like to) and there was about 1/2 dozen people fishing there. And when I asked, they seemed disappointed that they regularly catch carp instead of other species.
  18. I do lots of spinning for Bonito and the likes off the rocks, I then take them home and freeze them as bait for my fishing trips. The only problem I find with Bonito, it falls off the hook easily once picked at. But overall I rate it as a decent bait, along with Frigate, and Slimies. Caught some really decent fish on all of them equally, and they have proven me success in both the ocean and the river systems.
  19. Ye, I really don't think it's a flathead. From the photos by Barnzey, does seem like a blenny
  20. Welldone, you don't see many that size in Shellharbour
  21. There was a series of different material used in the early days, I found you this link on the internet, and hopefully it will provide some sort of a guidline. Fishing Line History
  22. I have always been curious on this too, I usually bleed them and leave them on the sand for a little, wash them off in the water and into the bucket. Recently, I have started to fill up my bucket with water, and once bled and dead I put them in the bucket. I am sure there must be a better method, but I really won't be able to take an esky with ice.
  23. I am really interested in targeting the elusive Jewfish (yes still haven't landed my first one ). Is Dee Why any good?
  24. Ye, sorry that diagram was a quick cut/paste job from the internet. You can actually get more than 3 hooks in a gang, but normally that involves buying the right hooks and connecting them up. I only really ever use 3 gangs ready made from the shop, easiest way to do it.
