  3. Hi, As some of you may know from my other posts, I lost a good rod and reel overboard at North Head on Sunday. Very painful blow as it was only newish and bought as a gift for my 40th birthday. But looking on the bright side, it does give me an excuse to buy a new one! My dream is to catch Kingfish, and I love trolling. With those two things in mind, what would other Fishraiders recommend as a rod and reel combination? I'm not looking to break the bank, but I'm happy to spend a bit - I wont be letting this one overboard!! thanks for your advice Fryboy
  4. Hey there, great report and photos, thanks! Any chance you can divulge the name of the skipper/boat/company? I've got a mate in Brisbane trying to organise the same sort of thing. fryboy

  6. Hi Ken, thats an excellent response, exactly the sort of summary I was looking for - thankyou. Also, thanks for clarifying the 'owning' versus 'using' for the licence, that makes it clear now. Here is the link straight to that page for anyone else reading this thread.. http://www.marinerescuensw.com.au/index.php/marine-radio-network/using-your-marine-radio/ I've also contacted the Marine Rescue Terrey Hills and got the date for the next course. really appreciate your help. regards Jeff
  7. Hi all, Had my first trip out in my new boat on Sunday morning. What a cracking morning it was too! Took a couple of mates and one youngster out off North Head, ex Roseville bridge. Between us all, we've got about zero fishing experience, but all keen to learn and see what we can find. We spent the first hour trolling along the walls at North head with various lures for zero. Then we saw a big school of salmon?/Tailor? and chased them for the next couple of hours. Despite their being 'boiling' water and us tossing various lures into the centre of the school, we couldnt get a thing! There were heaps of boats out there, plus some kayaks. Once we all started chasing the school, it got pretty hectic out there. I learnt a lot about how to handle the boat in traffic, and I hope I didnt get in anyones way. We did have a line crossover with one other guys line at one point, but we sorted it quickly and no harsh words. I read in other posts that the etiquette when fishing a school is to not run right through it and spoil everyones fun - well I managed to do that, but I think there are others out there who need to read Fishraider. Numerous times other boats would come and spoil the party for the 2 or 3 others that had got there first! Worst of all, we lost a rod overboard on the way home. We left all four rods in the rocket launchers on the trip home (stupid, I know now) and when we got back to Roseville we all looked around to see only three rods! Bummer! Well, I can certainly say I'm very happy with my Quintrex 530 Freedom Sport, its a great fishing boat, and the Yammy 115 4 stroke is powerful and quiet. The hull seems to ride the swells really easily. I hope its not a bad omen that we caught 0 fish... I'm putting it down to experience. Next weekend I'll be off pittwater, maybe try some of the reefs that I read about on here. cheers Fryboy
  8. Hi there, Nice catch for a nights work! I see some comments about not eating the fish out of the Parra river... two things: 1. My mum was raised in Parra and fondly remembers pulling 'large' jewfish out of the river on a very regular basis whenever they needed some food (this was depression era). Seems it was easy for a young girl to head down there and knock up a feed for the family! 2. On a recent trip to Vietnam, I saw farmed prawns being harvested. If you could have seen the water they were coming out of, you would never eat them again, and a 2010 Parra river Jewfish would seem absolutely pristine! regards Fryboy
  9. Thanks Jeff, I'm very confused with this, as the ACMA website says: Class licences authorise the operation of a number of devices commonly used on vessels. These include: 27 MHz and VHF marine radio equipment; Mobile and satellite phones; Inmarsat communications equipment; Marine radar; Low power on-board UHF equipment; EPIRBs; and Citizens Band (CB) radio equipment. Class licences are open, standing authorities that allow anyone to operate particular radiocommunications equipment provided that the operation and the device are in keeping with the condition of the licence. Class licences do not have to be applied for and no licence fees are payable. That seems to suggest no licence required. Fryboy
  10. Hi all, Just wondering if there is a simple procedure posted somewhere, or if another member could summarise, how and when to log in and out with Marine Rescue. Also, can someone summarise the best way to use the VHF when disabled and requiring a tow etc... I've searched the Marine Rescue site, but cant find a simple to follow guide. Appreciate any help. thanks Fryboy
  11. Hi, I've got two kids, 7 and 9. We love McCarrs creek - great picnic spot, lots of parking (which will cost a few dollars if you are not from Pittwater) and a beach and public jetty to fish from. Always loads of kids learning off the jetty. We often head down on a saturday arvo, take the paper and some food. The wife reads the paper and eats the food, while I untangle kids fishing lines!
