  1. Fantastic report! Hope to get to Queensland to do some fishing this summer myself! Fryboy
  2. I want to support 'Lucky' from around the start of this thread - some proactive lobbying is a good idea. Also want to support that there are a lot of species that could benefit from modifying the size and bag, not just Jewfish. My suggestion would be to open a new Forum 'Size and Bag limits' with a thread for each of the popular species we Fishraiders so often see in our posts. The first comment should be the current size and bag limit and then invite comment on improvements. If anyone can bring some science to it such as SAfisho has done, even better. Leave the Threads open for a period of 2 months and see if a common recommendation can be found for each one, then summarise them up into some Fishraider recommendations. Then close the threads and then Fishraiders can send the results to the relevant authorities. 12000 fishraiders is a lot of votes, fishing licences and boat registrations... Fryboy
  3. Hi all, I bought a boat recently, and the trailer doesnt have any mudguards. I've been told that this is a requirement, so would like to rectify, but want to go second hand to save $ Anyone know where I should look for some second hand parts for the trailer? I'm Sydney based. BTW - its a coaster trailer. thanks fryboy
  4. Thats excellent advice Geoff. Much easier than having to get it off someone elses trailer, onto some tires or something..
  5. excellent, thanks Thommo. Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. I've also just purchased a 4 blade SS, so wanted to protect it, but am a bit unsure about how it will hold on with only the belleville washer! thanks Jeff
  6. Congratulations on the catch, but I think the footage is better. Well done!
  7. Hi all, I've been reading Fishraider for some time now, and two terms still stump me. Can anyone tell me what LBG stands for? ( light bait game, live bait grinding, light beer gas...)? The other one is cubing. I hear people do a lot of cubing, especially out deep and for tuna. But what is it? Sorry guys, I have searched the web and come up with nought. Appreciate it if you can fill me in. thanks Fryboy
  8. Hi all, I'd like to get a propeller lock for my boat. I'm looking at one of these McGard locks. Anyone tried them? http://www.mcgard.com/MarineProducts/PropellerLocks thanks Fryboy
  9. thanks for sharing, its good to know they are around! Happy eating.

    Jigs

I thought you were supposed to drop the jig to the bottom and retrieve it very slowly, then repeat....? Didnt know you could just leave it near the bottom...
  11. Awsome fishing. Have to put Mexico on the list...
  12. Hi, You dont get a lot of choice with the Diameter. As the pitch increases, so does the Dia. There was only about .5 inch difference in dia among all the 15 and 17 inch props that I was looking at. Heres a great article on propeller technology if you have the time.. http://turningpointpropellers.com/propellers_101_cm.htm fryboy
  13. Oh, and the other thing thats critical - check the engine is mounted at the right height. To do that, get the thing going at WOT and nicely trimmed, then check that your cavitation plate (wing/flange just above the prop) is skipping along just on top or just barely in the water. (Top tip from Fryboys boat driving skills course - get someone else to drive while you check the cav plate!) Bad motor height can affect the performance more than a bad prop apparently. Fryboy
  14. Oh man, I'm just going through the same thing, but different boat and motor. Actually just ordered a new prop from the states this week to try and improve performance. My research has found: To really know your problem, you need to know the engine manufacturers recommended max rpm, then work from there. You need to test on some flat water (thats good fun ..) and should get near that max rpm at WOT with a normal load in the boat and trimmed for the conditions. If you are not getting there, you should down pitch on the propeller, otherwise your engine is working harder than it needs to to get you up on a plane and keeping it there. Each inch of pitch relates to about 300rpm I'm told. For example, my engine was maxing out at 5300 rpm, thats 700 less than the 6000 max recommended by Yamaha for that engine. I am running and 19 inch pitch, so the theory would be to go to a 17 inch pitch. However.... then it gets interesting, because different props offer different performance. For example, the prop that I've ordered has more cupping and a higher rake angle (yeah, I dont know either), so the manufacturer has recommended a 15 inch pitch for me. From a lot of reading, I can tell that its a bit hit and miss. Even though this 15 inch propeller I've ordered looks like the ducks guts and sounds it too, I might put it on and get worse performance. So lucky that the manufacturer is ok to swap if not ok (but the postage to and from the states might kill me). So whatever you do, dont buy a propeller without testing it or having the option to switch. Just as an aside, I ordered the prop from the states because its much cheaper due to the dollar (go you aussie, go). The same Solas prop in Australia is $650, but even with postage from the states, I've got the same prop for just a tick under $400. (PM me if you want details on where I got that propeller from. ) Hope this helps. Key thing you've got to do is find that max rpm Fryboy
  15. Theres a few different mechanisms for the auto inflates, one of which is water pressure as described by abecadarian. Here is a good page that lists a few of the different types of methods http://www.sailingproshop.com/lifejacket.aspx
  16. hi, Boat registration fees: http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/rec_boating/rec_fees.html#Licences Trailer registration fees: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/feesconcessions/registrationfees.html regards Fryboy
  17. Hi, I bought myself and my wife an auto inflatable life jacket about 6 months ago. These are the ones that auto inflate when they hit the water, or you can manually inflate. They are damn expensive approx 200 each. But..... A standard PFD1 will set you back approx 70, and a manually inflating jacket around 130. So I reasoned that the extra bucks is going to seem insignificant if I or my loved one gets thrown overboard and hits their head on the way out. I never take mine off when in the boat, enclosed waters or not. Once I've gotten used to it, its not a big deal and does not restrict movement when fishing.
  18. As I drove past there the other day, I noticed the entrance to the lagoon was closed. Was that just due to the tide, or are we back to the situation where it only gets opened by a huge swell?
  19. Wow!!!! Nice one for the catch and release...
  20. thanks guys, I ended up going for a Shimano TR-200G and a 5'6' rod also by Shimano. This is a great setup for the price I wanted to pay. Jeff
  21. I only just saw this post now. Great that you did McCarrs creek. I reckon its one of the most kid friendly spots in Pittwater or even sydney. Someone once said that a family that fishes together, stays together.... Fryboy

  23. Hi Everyone, Quick report about our fishabout on Saturday morning... Took my brother in law from Bowral and two neighbors from Elanora for a bit of exploratory along the northern beaches headlands... Left Bayview @5am, out of Barrenjoey by 5.30 - our chance to catch the Sunrise was buggered by clouds... But, first run along the wall at Barrenjoey was rewarded by a nice Salmon to 60cm which put up a good fight for me for 10 minutes whle brother in law was at the helm. The next hour saw us pull up a variety of fish - another smallish Salmon, a couple of Yellowtail (to about 30cm), a Bonito then what looked like a Barracuda - can anyone confirm what this was... (sorry, pics coming - cant work out why they wont upload) We then trolled the heads around Whale and Avalon for only one more small Salmon. But on the way we encountered a pod of dolphins and a seal. Beautiful. (Got some video of that, but again cant work out whats going on with the uploading?) About 9.30 we headed back to Bayview in front of a rain squall. All in all, good fun and quite some fish but not the big Kingy I'm looking for. Fryboy
