    Which Fuel ?

Just wanted to update you guys. Thanks again for all your responses. I took the boat out last week and burned up all the E10. I couldnt face the hassle of draining it all etc. and it hadnt been in there that long, so I took my chances. Didnt have any problems. I then filled it up with 95 and took it out again yesterday. I've got to say that I definitely noticed a difference too. Motor sounded much smoother. I cant say there were any changes to the performance (still got the same revs and speeds), but it just 'felt' better. Sounds a bit like Dennis the lawyer in 'the castle' - 'its the vibe' thanks again. Fryboy
  3. Hi all, Had an amazing experience yesterday evening that I want to share. Got out very late yesterday, just time for a quick troll along the walls from Barrenjoey. Got as far as Whale Beach headland where we encountered a *massive* school of Kings feeding on the surface and heading south. I reckon the school covered an area about the size of a standard size house! My mate Glenn manages to hook into one with very light gear and a blade. Whilst Glenn is trying hard to bring that King in, I saw a whale come up about 100m further out and heading south. I managed to get a pic. A couple of minutes later and Glenn is still trying to bring in the King. Everytime it saw the boat, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, and off he'd go again trying to catch up to the school which had now moved south of us. During one of these runs, we got a bit of a shock to see that the whale (assuming the same one) had turned around and was now heading north and much closer to us. I got another pic. I was a bit unsure what to do here, as I know the law regarding 100m/300m to whales, but in this case, the whale was coming to me, not me trying to get to it! We also didnt know where it was heading, so I was unsure which way to move. So as a courtesy I switched off the motor and the sounder and we concentrated on bringing in the King.. Next thing, you couldnt believe it, the whale came up right next to the boat to the south of us!!!!!!!!! See pic We could also now clearly see it was not one whale but a mother and her calf. See pic That was very, very scary. I didnt want to be this close to such a huge animal and I was concerned that they might come too close and tip us or injure themselves. But that was nothing compared to what happened next.... Glenn still had the King on and it was nearly under the boat. We were about to cut the line, as we had realised that the whales must be coming to us because of the king. As I went for the knife, both mother and calf went right under the bow of the boat!!! Then Glenns line just went zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz for about three seconds and that was it, all over. We never saw the whales again - but mind you, we were a bit in shock and were just looking at each other going 'what the ^*(&( just happened??' I talked to the NPWS this morning about the incident. They confirmed that we werent in the wrong as the whales approached us. We did the right thing in turning the engine and sounder off. They also said that if Glenns lure is in or on the whale, it wont cause them much discomfort and they would shed it quickly. Phew. They also confirmed that humpback whales (which they think these were) dont eat fish! So the reason for the interest in Glenns Kingfish is unknown.... As it was getting dark, we headed back towards home. Going along the north face of Barrenjoey, we encountered another school of kings. Glenn managed to boat two undersize which were returned. I managed a big fat zero, and am still to catch my first King! Fryboy
  4. Didnt you just buy this boat from a dealer? I remember you put up a post about it being slow to get out of the hole last week, and the photo you showed us was of the boat in the dealers shop (because I know that dealer) If thats the case - just get it back to them. I'd reckon they should be fixing that for you without cost! Fryboy
  5. Has anyone got a link to the story? I hadnt heard of this and I cant find anything...
  6. Hey mate, all I could suggest is to follow what it says in the manual for a 'persistent offset' . It does say that 'some charts have consistent position errors' - sounds like you have one of those.. Map shift Warning: Map shift is for eliminating minor offsets. It should not be used if the correct datum is available. Use map shift with caution: incorrect application will cause incorrect boat positions. Some charts have consistent position errors. To correct this, apply a map shift. After a map shift: The positions of cartographic features (such as land, rocks, buoys and depth contours) move on the TRACKER chart display to where they should be. The positions of the boat, waypoints, tracks, and lines of latitude and longitude on the TRACKER chart display remain unchanged. Applying a map shift 1 Move the boat to a known point on the chart, for example a marina berth. 2 In the Chart setup menu, select Map shift. 3 Move the cursor to the position on the chart where the boat actually is. 4 Press and select Set. 5 Press to set the new map shift. The boat will now be displayed at its actual location. Clearing the map shift Clearing the map shift removes any map shift from the cartographic features on the TRACKER chart display. 1 In the Chart setup menu, select Map shift. 2 Press and select Clear. 3 Press .

  8. Hi, On top of Hueys advice, maybe also check the motor is mounted at the right height. I think if its too low you would get this problem. Fryboy
  9. Hi, I've just ordered a 1080 from the states. Why 1080? Because it has the mounting bracket included in the price (about 220) and has an extra inch of reach. Fryboy

    Which Fuel ?

arrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhh. thanks for all your responses fishraiders. Just for info - the owners manual only states to use fuel with minimum 90 RON. Nothing about ethanol, but I guess it wasnt on most peoples agenda in 2003. So the bright side of this story...... I'm going to have to take the day off to go fishing tomorrow, all day, to burn whats left of the E10 in the tank, then fill up with standard or 95. regards Fryboy

    Which Fuel ?

Oh dear! thanks for the responses guys. Problem is that where I usually get fuel, there is no more 'standard' unleaded. I can only get premium 95 or 98 RON. I'll start shelling out the bucks to do that now, or look for some standard 91 RON. Hope I havent hurt the motor. I've only had the boat a few months, so I assume that a few tanks of E10 wont have hurt it! Jeff

    Boat Insurance

When I insured my boat, with Suncorp, they specifically advised me the boat had to be kept OFF STREET, and be secured, either to a building or with a wheel clamp or similar. It was very clear that it should not be kept on the street. Fryboy

    Which Fuel ?

Hi all, I've searched the site for a post about fuel, no luck! I bet some raiders have an opinion on what type of fuel to pour into their trusty outboards? I'd certainly like to know. I have a Yamaha F115 (4 Stroke) and have been putting in standard E10 fuel. Does the ethanol hurt my pride and joy? Whenever I do fill up, I wonder if I should be lashing out on the 95 or 98 RON stuff. Would it make a difference? Great to hear others thoughts Fryboy
  14. What a great read. thanks! I'm busy writing a report too.....
  15. Hi WTTMRWolf, I'm enjoying reading your journey here. Now, I am definitely just an interested bystander here with ZERO qualifications to comment, but I thought I could throw my 2 cents in.... Console - I've seen some great looking centre consoles, with canopy. I think thats a top idea, so you have at least some shelter from the sun when you need it. It wouldnt need to be big, just big enough to give you some shade when you are trolling or getting too and from. Might keep you a little dry too. You could also combine the rocket launcher and handhold idea into it.... Under floor - Wouldnt separating out a bilge area from the rest of the underfloor create a big problem? I mean, where does the water go that gets under the floor in the non bilge area? Maybe I misunderstood your point....? cheers Fryboy

    Melbourne Cup

I cant believe they get a holiday in Vic for a horse race!
  17. Only slightly embarrassed to say that I did the same thing a few weeks ago....
  18. I saw something about this on the news last week. The birds have had a tough migration this year, due to some big typhoons across asia. So they are literally dropping out of the sky with exhaustion before they make their final destination...
  19. Safer in the boat than on the beach!

    Boat License

As the father of an (intellectually) disabled son, I feel your pain. Its nice to hear of a win for a change! It would be great if we didnt have to enlist all that political support to ensure whats right.. Great work Fryboy
  21. What a great report. Thanks! Hope the Flathead fillets tasted good!
