  1. no shame in using electric just watchered your video... at least you take the rod out of the holder that's more than i do. rod goes in the holder before the first drop and only comes out after the last. as long as the sun glare is not reflecting off the digital screen i can watch the metre read from my seat and i will not even stand up till the last 50m. does that make me lazy ? notice you use glow sticks and strobes do you think they make a difference ?
  2. where you fishing the central mark ? once i moved wide I had no problems ... it was just to lose blue eye i could catch gem all day but you need that mixed bag to make the trip worthwhile ! I know everyone is talking about all the mako but i lay trail for almost an hour (which I know is not a long time but all the same)without a sighting, once again I was off the central mark as i figured that those bottom bashing wouldn't be to happy with me calling in the sharks. Thing that makes it all the worse is i stripped down the shark rig before heading home only to run accross one on the way.
  3. this is the mark i use for the spot that is mentioned here anywhere in the general area 33,44,460 151,19,571 seems to work nver got any monster kings but got a few different things worth taking home noah
  4. It was the quickest thing to do at the time and I was by myself so seemed like the best option. Considered redropping and hoping that the brick would prove to heavy for it and it would give up and i could motor off a bit and re-raise but I have no idea how deep they go etc etc this way I didn't lose any line and still had enough leader to not have to re-rig I had about 30m of leader so the losing 5m was not the end of the world.
  5. Headed out to browns yesterday ride out was pretty good with the exception of the small squall i hit at about the 30km mark, arriving at about 8.30am I did my first drop as soon as i set the line i was sure i had a taker (the setup i'm on is very stiff and hard to pick hits unless you real get smashed) so up we come seemed to be coming up slower than normal so was confident of a fish or two but on arrival ZERO ! Repositoned and go again this time a hit for sure up we come from time to time the reel strains a bit but keeps on coming at the 100m to go i start getting me crap together ie gaff and boat pole (thing) to pull the line to the boat. then at 30m to go the rod doubles over and the reel makes a sudden scream .... only lasted for a second then back to normal I was thinking shark there goes half a gemmie.. electric cuts out with a few to go and i reel in the last 5m in, great two nice blue eye good size too then a huge seal comes from under the boat and takes the one on the top dropper had the drag set very high (near locked up) on the reel but it still pulled in just enough that I could not reach the line or my droppers as my rod bent to near breaking point and with 200lb leader still spooled on the reel i figure a couple of fish is not worth the dramas and the damage and there was no way mr seal was letting go so I cut the line after doing so I came up with about three better options of what i should have done but that's life. Moved to a mark about 1.5k from the central mtn mark and did a few more drops no blue eye but bagged out on gemmies. Headed back to the coast with the plan of jigging off the heads but at about 10k out I see a sharks fin clearing the water, stopping the engine and grab a bucket of burley throwing half it over the side and grab the 50 and my pre-rigged case to find a shark rig. At this stage i had not seen the shark since the first sighting then it comes in from behind the boat and goes under I'd say at least 3m and huge not sure what type but may have been a white as it was so solid. Took me about a minute to get the shark rig on hook up a salmon i had and add a balloon. Then start preparing for action, now history / luck show as soon as you put on a stand up harness and gloves you never get a hit and this was true yesterday, burleyed for about an hour but had no luck. Might have been for the best I would have never got to to the boat and one things for sure I didn't want it in the boat !!! So head back to the ramp with a good feed of Gem fish and wondering how the seal had enjoyed the blue eye and how long it held onto it and the brick i was using as a sinker as it headed to the bottom ! Think I need a bigger kill tank !
  6. Thanks Juiced... bit far for me ! think i'll just try my luck around browns get some gemmies / blueeye (fingers crossed)and if anything turns up where I am I'll have a shot. thanks noah
  7. might head out tuesday, anyone else got plans ? Does anyone know if they have been surface feeding during the day ? or is it just a case of laying cube and hoping for the best ?
  8. Mate I picked up a 2nd hand electric off online shop for about $500 added a bent butt whole setup cost less than buying a new 50... and all i can say is i could not imagine trying to bring up a string with a few fish (and a brick)on a 30 or a 50 ( i know people do... maybe I'm just soft or old most likely both)I still remember how sore my arm was when I spooled up my penn 50 and how long it took sitting at home. Having said that a guy i fish with has told me he's fished browns with a 50 never asked him how long it took .... lets just say he's now on power. plus if you stop to catch your breath you stand a good chance of losing you catch to a shark or once their swim bladders expand they can float off. I use 100lb braid and 200lb leader.
  9. Best of luck mate, take it from me having a boat does not always mean a feed countless times i've been out done everything right and still come home empty and that includes pockets more than once my wife has suggested my money would be better spent at the fish markets... it's all about getting out once you are in that mind set it takes the presure off some off ! some of the best days i've had on the water have been gathering bait with my little boy he's a natural at the yakka and likes it more than going after the big ones... he still can't work out why i'd spend hours trying for kingies or the like when in 20mins we can catch dozens of yakka
  10. It was about 10am and i'd been up since 2am so seemed like a good time to crack a tin ...for the record it was 4x gold... ie mid strenght, will let you know if I need a partner cheers noah
  11. thanks for the ID was about 1.2m long came to mid chest, might have to submit it for a FR record
  12. Im in a qinnie sprirt 520 it's 5.8m with a 90hp used about 80lt (I hold 100lt and took a 20lt backup just in case) total running hrs on the engine 6hrs for the day ran the engine the whole time a browns to control my drift. fishing with electric
  13. if your heading out of roseville ramp in the next few day watch out for wood in the water, seems to be heaps some big bits as well
  14. Finally was able to get out to browns, headed out of roseville at about 4ish (was running well ahead of time... could not sleep) and went to get some livies had figured that I might use them at 12 mile. Anyway picked up my mate at watsons and headed to 12miles for a quick jig (and livebait) could not sound anything and there was fish trap buoys right on my mark keen to fish brown made the call to head straight there. About this time it became clear that the pills that my mate had taken didn't work but he was keen to continue on. Arriving at browns there was about 10 boats, first drop results in a biggish thing !!! think hairtail with a normal fish tail any suggests (edit turns out to be a Ribbon fish, coming in at 145cm long caught on cuttlefish bait)? one missing shark clip and the other one baited. 2nd drop score a nice gem, by this time my mate was no better so i said we'd scrap the plan to cube just do a couple more drops bag out and head home. Sadly the next drop caught the bottom my break away worked but lost the bottom before anything took the bait and then the next drop i got snipper by something my mate was not looking good at all so called it a day HAd a goog return trip bit bumpy till about the half way mark but made it back in under 1.5hrs which included a number of spew stops, Not to sure if my mate will want to head out again but one thing for sure he wont rely in ginger tablets again.
  15. anyone heading out wide on Tuesday ?
  16. i use a sea anchor all the time and find it very useful to control drifts i largely put it down to my boat being quite light 750kg say just under a 1k with me and fuel / gear but at just under 6m plus with the clears on it really picks up the wind.
  17. i'd be happy to do a couple of camping gear transfers across ! should we throw around some dates or wait till a bit later in the year ?
  18. if that's the case i'd expect a government buy back....
  19. mate this is what i have done, cheap and cheerful, just drill the spacing to suit diff rod sizes... i've go everything there from a 4 weight fly rod to a electric setup on a bent butt.
  20. yeh you can get a clip rig, the clip is a sliding plastic tube that you tie on when you rig up if you want to limit how far it goes put a small split shot on up the line, they work pretty well i normally pick them up from not sure if we can say so PM me if you have trouble finding them but if you head to any good (if not good big will have them ....that in itself is a pretty good hint) cheers noah
  21. that 150 is a great size, most of the "larger" ones I've heard of (me inc) only went 120. well done, many boats out ?
  22. happy to help mate was glad to hear you hooked up , keep me updated on your movements and might see you out on the water sometime.
  23. i agree tuna for sure saw a number break the surface if i'd had more time (and no kids on board) i would have had a crack at them on fly gear with tiny little siliver flies, when i've had salmon feeding on micro bait it's worked well even with my lack of skill on the fly gear
  24. I saw them yesterday coming back in from longy were hitting the surface but not feeding (no birds on them) throw a few things at them, metals, divers and ran a couple of loops around them with bullet and pusher skirts but got nothing was getting late so gave up.
