1. Very nice, I'm still waiting for my first bay kingie.

    Getting pretty frustrated actually.

Nice looking sashimi, I have a good cured kingfish recipe if you like that sort of thing??

Yes it has been quite a frustrating summer so far, but they are slowly trickling in. You'll be onto to them soon, just keep at it.

Haha. Well the restaurants couldn't possibly have gotten fish fresher than that I reckon.

Yes, very true. I still can't believe how much the markets charge for a slice of these guys. Unbelievable!!

Great catch mate. Can I ask...what's the best way to cut a squid up into strip baits?

There are 2 ways, one is to ring them like you would if you were making calamari rings, but that's if you have a big squid. The way I like to do it is to take the head off first and then slice it down the middle, open it up so you have one big piece, then depending on size is just slice it to make big triangles, don't be stingy on the size of your strips hehe then what I do is make 4-6 small cuts about 10-15cm on the bottom of the triangle (give's the strip some movement). Hope I was clear enough? If not PM me and I can send you a picture next time I do it.

Nice king and the sashimi looks yummy!!! Well done!!!

    thanks mate.

Hey buddy, great going that's another one to your list. :)

I hit the harbour on Saturday for a change and didn't start of all that well when my motor wouldn't start, starter motor decided not to cooperate. Dropped the auxiliary in and of we went.

Only managed one squid which I dr but only got picked at. Conditions where fantastic.

We did mange some nice table fish, bream, flathead, Trevally and flounder.

Still chasing that 2013 king, fingers crossed.

Mate your knife skills are looking exceptional,

You should consider taking up pro sushi chef lol.

    Cheers Daniel.

Yeah, still to add the hoodie to the list this summer, but from Savage73's post, I can feel it's just a trip or 2 away

nothing wrong with taking table fish home, it keeps me in the good books with the :wife:

ahahaha, the Mrs ain't too big a fan on the taste of raw fish, so I have to try and entice her with something different.

    Quintero,

I love a good fishing post that starts with bait catching, moves through the catch and ends up on the table in a quality fashion....that's first class!

thanks mate, I feel like I spend so much time and effort in chasing these guys that I need to put in the same time and effort when I put it on the table for family and friends.

  2. Hi Raiders, being the last week of my holidays, wanted to get out as much as possible.

On the water at 9, spent 2 HOURS!!! in 4 different locations for 1 medium size squid, think it had to do with the dirty water and crap everywhere turning them off. Think the squid liked the jig as it matched it's eyes :D

Stripped the squid up for 4 strips and a head. Lost the head and 3 strips to pickers, have a suspicion it could be jackets as not only did it come back with no strip, but no bloody hooks either!! :ranting2:

Down to the last strip and the elastic goes ping! It went 70cm. Out of squid, decided to try and downrig an x-rap, and picked up a nice size tailor :D

Turned one fillet of the king to normal sashimi, and the other one to a a recipe a friend gave to me, Kingfish sashimi with passion fruit, mint lemon grass and roasted rice powder. Had him over and he said it was better than the restaurants!! ahahah LOL, think it was the free sashimi and beers that was talking hehehe

Sorry if I am salivating as I say this but wow that is a nice kingy (and sashimi)!

Sometimes when you can only manage one, and one that isn't a big one. You appreciate it so much more, and they somehow taste that much better also. :)

    1357588517' post='465759']

The joys of fishing for Kingies! Great stuff mate, glad you were able to get one on the table :)

Now that work has started, gonna have to hit up the Bay from now on. No chance of getting onto the Hacking on the weekends.

Work starts next week for me when that happens, I'll be hitting the bay after work in the yak. Might catch u out there.

    1357594489' post='465765']

Well done buddy. That frustration was never going to last long given your previous form.

    Cheers

Oh mate, tell u what, when that first one pulled the hook. I was ready to pack it in, sell the boat and go back to playing golf! Hahaha

    1357598749' post='465768']

I can attest it is a "nice" kingy indeed. Thanks for the sushimi.. went down nicely :).

Solo and late start too! Well done!

Not a prob buddy, you know me, got no friends so solo trips are the way. :)

    1357598988' post='465769']

They always taste better after a late start too!!!! It feels like cheating. Well played.

Yeah, it does, doesn't it. :).

    Mmmmmmm that looks awesome

How you going Luke? Been getting into them?

    Hey buddy,

Great to see you finally got a keeper. I've been out a few times over the last week but things have been very quiet.

I bought myself some xraps and trolled outside for nothing.

My furuno has been quite bear as well.

Did you find them in the bay??

    Cheers Daniel

Hey Dan, been hearing that quite a lot lately, pretty unusual for the bay at this time of the year. Think the up and downs of the weather has to do with it.Go the Xraps!

    1357623690' post='465849']

where abouts did you get the kingy and the squid mate if you dont mind me asking

    Sending a PM

  5. Hi Raiders, it's been a while since I've been able to bring home a king, lost count of the number of trips this summer where the only thing I've been able to do is feed squid to rats. Made a late call today to head out, got onto the water at 11:30 and planned to squid for an hour and then hit the kings, if not then I had some prawns and plastics for bream and flatties.

Fortunately I got onto 3 squid quick smart and proceeded to DR them for some kings. First drop and pass, came back with nothing (fed them again!, getting quite depressed now), whack on half a squid, bang it's on, definitely no hoodie from the lack of bending in the rod, but called it for a keeper, got it boatside only for it to spit the hook, think I 'gunned' it out too quickly ranting2.gif feeling quite deflated, I whacked on the other half, lose it again to pickers. Stripped up the last squid, and I am on, calling it for a keeper as well, got it in the boat at 78cm. The relief that I can finally take a king home biggrin2.gif

lost the rest of the strips to more pickers, but started seeing some really good showings on the sounder, fish everywhere, with some pretty large arches, only if I had more squid, oh wells, leave them for next time.

got home and introduced the king to my new sashimi knife, the king had no chance! biggrin2.gif

  6. well done Gav's!!! great effort! I was out today in my yak in the hacking as well. I don't think I'll be paying that place a visit on a weekend anytime soon, the number of boats zooming around in all different directions doesn't make it too pleasant out on the yak, and I don't think fish like all that commotion going on as well :biggrin2:

wasn't able to find any kings, but managed a couple of bream which made dinner, but I wished it had been sashimi kingfish hehehe :biggrin2:

  7. well done again buddy and thanks for the kingie, finished a whole fillet myself last night.

knew I should have paddled over to where you guys were in the yak but my arms and shoulders were goneskis. Should have taken the boat, stuff the thoughts about exercising next time!!! biggrin2.gif

You can try to fish lighter. Going down in leader size helps. You can also berley or use different baits or lures but these tactics often won't work. Kingfish are very moody. Some days they will belt everything while other days they will sit doggo and refuse all baits and lures. Better to fish elsewhere in my opinion and try again later.

P.S. I have some examples where I switched techniques to get teh fish to bite.

    post-2057-046445900 1354762778_thumb.jpg

I caught this fish on a jig after all the baits failed. This fish measured 121cm.

Whereas this fish was caught on bait when the lures failed. Is the biggest fish my boys have landed so far. A skinny fish but length is 110cm.

    post-2057-059959900 1354762928_thumb.jpg

Sometimes switching techniques will get you that strike.

Thanks for the tips mate! Will definitely try different tactics next time. Beats the hell out of down rigging over 20-30 passes for nothing but rats :)The smiles on your kids faces says it all! Top stuff, can't wait till my son's old enough to take him out for some kingie action.

  9. This is a question I get asked VERY often. The spots for kingfish are no secrets as they are well known. You can even buy maps in tackle stores which show all the good kingfish spots in Sydney. The trick is to be there when the fish are there. I move around a lot when fishing for kings. Often travelling many many kilometers. My theory is that kings will hit your bait or lure within seconds or not take it at all. The more you present a bait or a lure to a kingfish, the less they will be enticed. They are not like murray cod and are not territorial. You can't irritate a king into taking a lure or bait.

With this in mind, you can either wait for the fish to come to you or you can go to the fish. I prefer the latter. My anchor is rusting out from lack of use as I am constantly on the move.

. Last week while fishing with my mate Peter we got fish in 5-7m of water but it is very difficult to drag them out from the shallows.

These kings are on the verge of breeding and are feeding up so where ever there is bait, the kings will follow

    post-2057-021691500 1354683996_thumb.jpg

Got done more than we'd like. To have a better chance I look for deeper water but the secret is the presence of bait.

Areas where you find these fellas is a good place to start!

    post-2057-088582200 1354684330_thumb.jpg

Great Kings mate! you definitely know your stuff. I totally agree with you about "kings will hit your bait or lure within seconds or not take it at all". I've been out many times to spots where I usually land these hoods, I sound them out and they are definitely there, but they just won't hit the squid. What do you reckon that is? and got any tips on how to entice them to strike? maybe they are full and I got there a tad too late maybe?

    thanks

  10. Hey mate,

I thought that would make you laugh lol.

Yeah I gave the downrigger a little workout on Saturday in the bay. I was sounding around the oil wharf, when I picked up a fairbit of activity. I rigged up a squid and did a few passes but had not takers.

I then anchored up on the western side of the oil wharf, and noticed hundreds of yakkas all round the boat. That's what I must have picked up on the sounder.

I did fish the harbour a few weeks ago and I found a good squid spot heheh. We managed 4 squid, Went outside north head, a little bumpy but set up a squid on the DR and started a slow troll north. Didn't last to long, my dad decided

He would start a natural burley trail lol. Had to head back in and drop him off at ramp. Only managed a few Trevally that

    Day.

Have you had a chance to get out?

Good to see you dropping the 'bomb' down, soon enough that elastic will pop and there'll be a nice big hoodie on the end of your line biggrin2.gif

Yeah the yakkas seem to be everywhere right now, I see huge schools around mollie on the sounder, hopefully the bigger kings will be coming inside chasing them.

I've been able to get out a few times lately, a few weeks ago, I lost 6 squid to 7 rat kings. Should have just kept the squid to eat hehehe biggrin2.gif

Was out on the same day as Formosan in the video he posted, was a tough morning squidding, think the rain had something to do with it, I only ended up with a cuttlefish. So whilst Formosan was chasing kings, I went and got a couple of bream for dinner.

As for the first botany hoodie, I wish you all the luck Dan!

Somehow I got this gut feeling that someone is going to land one this weekend. biggrin2.gif

    Hey buddy,

FINALLY!! You just gave me the kingy bug.

Great to see they are starting to make an appearance.

Looks like you've got a head start on quintrex480 lol.

    Great work, as usual.

    Cheers Daniel

Hahaha head start? I am saving my first kingy post when I get stuck into them hoodies! Hehehe been plagued by rats lately in the bay.You been putting the new downrigger to use yet Dan?

  12. Say hello next time mate. I was using about 10kgs. Cheers

I only know it was you now after your post :) will do next time.

10kg hmmm... Don't think that's enough, especially for the really big ones. I preset the saltiga to 15kg, they manage to take a bit of line but not much. I use an electronic scale, stick the rod into the holder and pull line out until I see a reading of at least 15kg's.

  13. Unlucky erroll, to be busted off using such serious gear, they would have been seriously huge!

think I saw you you guys as well biggrin2.gif all we managed were a sh!tload of pickers stealing our squid, and nothing touched the yakka.

just wondering, how many kilo's of drag do you set it on?

  14. awesome king mate! well done!

I think the kingy season has begun! I was out in the Bay today, outside water temp is sitting at 18.5. All I managed were rats, rats and more rats, heaps of action on the sounder. Every time I reeled one in, a whole pack of them would come up following, they were absolutely everywhere.

Just waiting for the bigger ones to arrive from Longy :biggrin2:

  15. Hey Luke, yeah put a fish in his hands and he thinks he's a model! Hahaha

If we're talking about the same place then you definitely do not want to eat any fish caught in there. The water use to be pristine when I was a kid then they started dumping sh!t in there. You can pump worms from the area as well and the sand wreaks!

  16. nice EP's buddy! I caught a couple of these guys when I was a kid going for bream near where I lived as a kid and yeah they do go pretty hard for their size.

haven't been back there in donkey years, might have to relive some childhood memories by heading down there again in the yak :biggrin2:

p.s. is Luke really that ugly?
