  1. hey mate, the question I was asking was 'is Trung still alive?' :D haven't heard a peep from you for a while! good to see you getting back into it.

you are right about the squid though, hasn't been as easy as past summers, need to move around a little for them, but even then, we're just feeding them to rats still anyway hehe

see you out on the water soon.

  2. Was a decent day out even though we didn't run into any big kings, but will definitely be giving the other spot a good go next time, the showings on the sounder looked very promising.

Squid were a bit hard to come by, even the yakkas didn't want to play ball, and those baby kings were funny, they even fought harder than the bigger dollies. :D

  3. Nice one Pete!!! yeah you ended the season on a massive high buddy! well done! can't wait till next year to do it all over again hehe

Now onto them kings! be back in a few weeks, we'll catch up then mate.

  4. nice work braining the reds!

thanks for sharing your dramas. surge is a nightmare when retrieving boats, especially where a break wall is involved. we had a bad time at coffs this year!

no solution unless you pull your boat out from a shallow water trailer or buy a polycraft!

cheers chewie, yeah we know how tough those poly's are. They can withstand being dropped off the trailer whilst driving and still be ok as a fellow raider has proven earlier this year :D

Do you Remember when I said I wont go down there alone, now you know why, or anywhere else, you need an offsider when I the water, there is no way I would go out alone, Any Im glad you got out safely with a couple of good reds and Im sorry to hear about your boat damage.

yes I do remember. I do take every precaution when I go out solo, having all the necessary safety gear and logging in with the coastguard. For those that don't know already, there is an smartphone application called SafeTrx, let's you log in and out easily with the coastguard. Real simple to use as well.

Well done again mate! I fished there last weekend and caught 2 reds 58cm both out in deep water-220ft. Both fish caught on 140mm wrigglers.

Both fish hooked close to bottom, have you been getting hits mid water or near bottom?

Also when your looking for reds on the sounder do you search for bait schools or big shows hugging the bottom.

Keep the reports coming great reading...

well done on those solid reds, I reckon they taste the best at that size. Those wrigglers are pretty good, but I usually do better with the berkley jerk shads in the 7inch. Give them a go next time, make sure you work them real good. I always seem to hit the fish in the bottom 1/3 of the water column. Usually the big bait schools I see on the sounder are jackets, so I steer clear away from them. I look for defined arches hugging the bottom.

Nice reds m8. Good to hear you came out relatively unscathed. Should have called your old man from the RSL to drive the car and trailer around to Wollongong harbour lol...

thanks mate, just a couple of scratches here and there, no biggie.

Sounds real bad and could have been mych worse

I have been wanting to try launching my boat at bellamby but will think twice after reading what happened since my boat is heavy and not cooperative at slow speeds

Best news is no body got hurt

    Stay safe

    Best regards Dave

wayyyy worse! yeah the bigger the boat, the worse it'll be on that ramp. I did see some smaller tinnies come in after me, and they didn't have too many issues in getting in.

We'll done on the fish mate and the compassion you showed for your father! As for the retrieve, I bet you were pretty freaked out by the prospect of a solo job and who comes to the rescue???

Another raider!!! We'll done guys, it just shows the spirit of the members on this site!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

LOL, yeah felt like I was torturing him keeping him on the water, so I did the humane thing and ditched him at the ramp :D
  5. Hi Raiders,

I wasn't going to make a post but seeing that I've had a few PMs asking what happened at the ramp, I decided just to make this post to warn others about what can happen back at the ramp at Bellambi when the swell is up.

But to start off with, I'll just start with the fishing report seeing that I am in this section...

Headed out on Friday morning with my dad to see if I can put him onto some reds, my dad is an old school fisho, so just bait all the way! and he's seen my recent collection of plastics and been quite skeptical with the reds I've been landing recently with them. (NO WAY you have been catching those snappers with these plastic things! he says). Well I wanted to show him and prove to him how effective they are.

Swell was a little up in the morning but manageable, so we headed out. First cast with the nemesis nuc chicken, and I am on and it's a big mutha!! runs, head shakes, runs, and doesn't stop. I am just about to palm the spool and then pop. Leader comes back all frayed, and nothing but :ranting2::ranting2::ranting2: coming from me. Then it goes all quiet, knowing the high was at 1pm, we moved to deeper waters (50m), and the sounder shows some good readings. By now, my dad's gone green from being seasick and he's on the floor LOL. So I am fishing on my own, land a couple of pannies, a mowie, and then a pigeon pair of 67cm snappers. Still not the 70+ or 80+ ones I am after but pretty happy nonetheless and happy to prove to my dad that reds can be landed on plastics.

Decide to drop my dad back at the ramp as he is totally gonskies! and he decides that he'll just go walkabouts around Bellambi whilst I head back for a couple more hours, but nothing. Headed back in around 3 and the swell has gone up and this is when it get's quite hairy with the following seas coming back in, you need to watch out for those big swells following you! so keeping an eye on the swell behind you is essential! seen enough of those videos on youtube with guys trying to cross bars to make you crap your pants!

Finally made it back to the ramp, and thinking to myself, how the hell am I going to manage getting the boat back on the trailer myself, but I had no choice. Quickly tied the boat onto the wharf and ran to the car, looking back I can see the boat being smashed around DOH!!!! :ranting2::ranting2::ranting2: quickly backed the trailer down and jumped into the water to try and quickly get the boat on, and then a massive surge comes in and the bow is centimetres away from smashing into the back of the car, and then another one coming so close again. Thinking to myself, I am F!@#!@##!@#!@, then out of no where, fellow raider marto1976 jumps in the water and helps me out, we finally get the boat on the trailer and I jump in the car quickly to get out, but another massive surge comes in and picks the boat up off the trailer and wedges the boat against the wharf and trailer, the boat is basically stuck now, I am really F@#&*@#^@#&* now! then marto's mates come to the rescue, and we finally manage to get the boat unstuck and finally onto the trailer!

Oh man, what a relief when I finally get it off the ramp. Quick inspection sees a broken rod holder, scuff marks and a damaged mud guard but nothing else, so all good. Thanked all involved in helping me out and spent the next 30 mins having a chat to marto and his mates, top top guys! Picked my dad up from the RSL and so relieved to be driving home with my boat on the back. Dad asked how it went, and my reply was, ah all good no dramas :D

Well, sorry for the long post, but just hope I have passed on some warnings about what can happen at an exposed ramp when the swell is up. Just a quick pic of the pigeon pair of reds.

  6. Darren mate! I know I said thanks a hundred times already but here's another one.

Thanks again to you and your mates for helping us out at the ramp. I would have been truly stuffed if you didn't come to the rescue. That swell surge is a bitch!!! :ranting2:

And mate, that red is a cracker!, well done and well deserved! thanks for the frame as well, every bit of it will be eaten

I managed 4 reds today, 2 x 67cm and 2 pannies, and a bust off that felt like an 83cm LOL, I will get him one day!

    Also, check your PM!! =)

  7. nice one buddy! seems like you did some exploring around the bay, from the heads all the way to woolooware, good stuff.

which simrad sounder did you get and how did it perform?

I have seen them in the past coming and and blast the muck off the ramp, looks like it's due for another blast.

  8. Great video mate :) some top fish there. Liked :)

    cheers mate!

    Awesome Snapper and video :)

thanks buddy! been hitting the bay lately?

Awesome video and report buddy. Looks hard work on your own.

    Cheers Larry

thanks Larry, not too hard, well maybe just the netting part, my bigger net broke so had to resort to my kayak net which is way too dam small.

Very nice job on the video.Great solo job...left hand fisherman, right hand deckie.

Can you tell me if you anchor or drift out there?.....i hate anchoring in the deep, especially on my own.

    thanks mate!

always drifting, fishing between 30-65 metres so too deep to anchor. I use 2 sea anchors if the drift is too fast.

  9. nice work there mate. You are on the money again...

cheers mate... getting into any kingie action yet? or have you had a chance to take that hobie out yet?

Great reds, I thought the season for snapper was over but the bit looked hot this week based on the reports

the water is still cool, so hopefully they'll hang around for a little while longer.

Red Octobers looking good I see.

    Well done there.

    cheers

    thanks mate

Well done mate. I was at Bellambi as well but couldn't get a bait past the birds

got off the water at 11am

    cheers

    Adam

Hi mate, assume you're floating bait? yeah when the birds around, there'll be no way to float bait past them.

I mainly flick plastics for reds.

  10. lucky bastard....

i took a few weeks off from fishing locally after coming back from that mammoth fishing trip up Weipa....

Hit the bay/georges last week and landed 20+ flatties and bream in a short 2.5 hour session... heaps around atm

Went game fishing just this past Sunday and hooked up to my first marlin with Brickman... see the game fishing report! Now that was fun!

See you on the water shortly

    Cheers

    Trung

ehehehe i think you're the lucky bastard, having the chance to hook up onto a marlin! can't imagine what the thrill would be like. One day man one day! =)

Nice reds mate. Did you fish from Bellambi as I think I may have seen you down there? I went out and landed a few nice ones myself ill be posting it up later on. Great effort again...

cheers buddy! say hi next time... I am in the quintrex 480 coast runner, nothing flash either but does the job as well.

    Mate one word.....LEGEND!

    They are some nice reds.

Ps ive got my boat back so open to invites hehe.

    great read buddy

    cheers Daniel

cheers Dan, yep we'll let you know when we head down again.

you and me Brother, I stayed in the Hacking, weather reports are all over the shop, anyway we scored 8 flathead, 5 pan sized snapper, 6 jackets, couple of squid 4 trevally and some reefies.

mate, you should have let me know you had the day off... we missed out last time, anyways plenty of chances left.

Great report and Pics, thanks for sharing.

    Cheers

    Paikea

    Cheers mate.

  11. Good work mate! I'm spewing the wind picked up at lunchtime otherwise I would have come down. Ended up with a nice bag of bream and whiting in the end but unfortunately it didn't make me feel any better.

yeah Pete, glad I didn't listen to you about staying home LOL. But was hoping you could have joined me though, but that wind was absolutely howling when I got back to the ramp. At least you didn't waste the arvo and managed a feed. We have to tee up another trip soon.

  12. Taken a while for me to edit the video but here it is... hope you enjoy it.

    Hi Raiders,

Been a while since the last snapper outing and family commitments last weekend meant I missed out going again. Checking the forecast all week, today seemed the most probable, so took a gamble and headed out. Forecast had the wind blowing about 10kts, which is reasonable but I've been down there with that kind of forecast before, and they got it so wrong. But funny that this time, they had it wrong again! but in a good way! it was smooth as! :D

Got to my first mark, and first cast, landed a nice 55cm red. WOOHOO! great start, and then landed a small pannie, then the next one gave me a bit of grief and knew it was going to be a good size, came in at 67cm. YEAH BABY! beat my PB by 2cm. Soon my little bream stick with a 2500 reel buckles over and the drag is singing, and this thing wouldn't stop, I was down to backing soon and crapping myself. Some head shakes and it felt like a snapper, but then it stopped and I believe it might have ran into the grass bed or kelp or something because I all feel is dead weight now, and then gone, it spat the hook. DOH! :ranting2:

By about 11, the conditions went glass, there was absolutely no run at all, and with that the bites stopped as well. So moved off to deeper waters, and with the change in the high tide, the water started to run again, and you guessed it the bites started coming on again, landed another 3 between 45-55cm.

All caught on plastics, used every plastic under the sun. hehehe nemesis, jerk shad, z-man, wrigglers.

went through the entire range of jig head sizes as well, from 1/2 all the way to 2.0oz.

I have all the action on video, so I'll post it up when I finish the editing.

    thanks for reading.
