  1. great squid there mate! good to see someone landing the squid in numbers again.

that green eye looks massive! I've never landed an arrow in the bay before, were they landed more closer to the river?

so which jig did the damage if you don't mind sharing?

  2. I have the HDS gen 2, and usually when my sounder looks like that, it indicates a lot of crap in the water. try turning the sensitivity down a little and that should clear up the muck.

another tip is if you haven't already done so, is update the configuration in settings to the transducer that you have. There is a youtube clip out there somewhere that shows you how to do it, but you basically update the unit to the code for your transducer which is found on the silver sticker on the cable.

  3. Nicely done mate. What weight of jighead do you use on the 7inch jerk shads if you don't mind?

Thanks mate and I don't mind at all, guess it just depends on current and wind. But I notice I get a lot more hits on the lighter jig heads. On previous occasions, I've had to go up to 1-1.5 oz when the drift is really fast and not many hits at all. On this occasion I was using 1/2 and 3/4 and well, you know the result. All hooks in the 6/0.

  4. Nah, didnt get to go, still catching up on chores, been working around the clock last 9 weeks but looks like I just made a deal with the boss, I work every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only, I have the rest of the week off every week, will start 16th :yahoo:

oh man! lucky you! we might be planning a season ending hairy trip, not too sure how well that will go, but more than welcome to join.

Nice catch and looked like great fun!

oh man! my entire body was aching the following day, dam those salmon dish out some punishment on the light gear! but yeah, great fun!

    Mate

very good going. I am stuck at home with a boat that wont work. Go figure.

    Congrats again.

    Johno

oh man! what's the go Johno? weather has been next to perfect and you couldn't get out?

Awesome session mate, very nice bag especially being a solo session.

cheers Mike, I almost didn't go, so glad I did. But Tony and I have a saying 'when in doubt, just go!!!' when you out next?

  5. nice one! some very nice fish you got!

got to give that anchoring a go for those gummies, what sort of bait do you get them on?

Now I got spooled on my recent trip, was on one of my light rods, just a 2500 reel with 10lb line, it just wouldn't stop. Any chance you think that could have been a gummy? do they just keep on running until you turn their head?

  6. Hey buddy,

Jeez you move quick, tonys day got you all geed up lol. Great effort mate those reds look amazing.

I no the feeling, im still buzzing from that 50cm model I caught in the bay last year, so I can imagine how you feel with these brutes.

Does this mean that the humble snapper has slipped past the hoodies and to the top of your list hehe.

    Great work once again.

ps. Can we expect a vid???

    Cheers daniel

hey Dan, nah mate! those hoodies are still my passion!! I guess with the snappers, part of the enjoyment is trying to work them out, looking for possible grounds they might be hanging around, and of course, getting them with plastics is top fun. No video this time mate, too hard to manage when you're by yourself :D

So when are you going to come down with us? we've sent you the invites... hehehe

Top effort buddy..worked hard..stuck at it and got the rewards. The salmon bust ups must have been fun. How many species did you get? ..snapper, pig..couta,,flatties..morwong...damm! no bakers this time? :).

Don't tell everyone I eat aussie Salmon.! :):puke: I dont... Since they were busting up , I asked for a couple for my mum cause she does some dry or pickle fish with it.

thanks buddy, yeah got a mixed bag, managed 2 bakers this time, not 10 like the last time hehehe

I really need to grab some of the Salmon off your mum, see what the hype is about.

    Hey,

Nice bag mate. Looks like we've got another one with the snapper bug. They can be very frustrating at times but its days like that that make it all worth it.

cheers Pete, tell me about the frustrations. The last couple of trips have been totally frustrating, with only 1 or 2 being caught, but yes this trip definitely made up for it.

unreal mate, I wish I could go out there today but had too many chores to catch up on.

Cheers Basil, hopefully you were able to get out today (Sunday)

  7. Well done. Good on you for going solo and getting rewarded. You'll get a bigger one soon, although they all look like trophies to me.

cheers mate, yeah I need to break that 80cm mark. hopefully before the snapper season is over. :D

great to see results for effort! cheers wizza

    thanks mate

A day to remember for sure.

    Cheers

    Paikea

yeah definitely, I don't think I got to sit down to take a rest, trying to manage 4 rods with all that action going on was pretty hectic but loved every minute of it :D

    Awesome work there buddy

cheers buddy, hurry up and invest in that boat and come join us.

great fishh matee, by south you mean botany bay?

    thanks mate, pm sent.

great work as usual , nice feed :) and the weather has been kind cya out there sometime

yeah, when the weather was unreal! was a little bit a chop in the morning but by noon, it flattened out to perfect conditions. Yeah, hopefully be hunting kings again soon in the bay, and hope to bump into you some time.

  8. Hi Raiders,

I missed out on Tuesday when Formosan and DTrojan went out hunting reds and we all know how well they went, so I made it a mission to get out today and see if I can get amongst the action.

Day didn't start as planned, dramas at home early morning meant I didn't get onto the water until 8:30, and I unintentionally cancelled on my deckie, long story...... so a solo session it is then.

Anyways, dropped by Mr Formosan's PB snapper mark which he was kind enough to share with me, but only ended up with a few couttas, but these guys make some pretty good bait, so kept them. Then started to zig zag around to some marks I had marked down from looking at the new Navionics Sonar Contours (got to say, these new maps are freaking awesome!!!). But it was pannie after pannie, between 35-50cm.

Then the salmon rocked up, they were absolutely everywhere!!!! some good fun to break up the day, especially on little 2500 reels on bream gear. Now I have never caught these guys on light gear before, usually get them as by-catches when targeting kings on 80lb gear, and man they gave me a work out.

But I really wanted that trophy red, so tried another mark I had jotted down, and I came across some nice flatties, landed 4, biggest going 65cm. NICE! but still no trophy red.

I hung around, waiting for the tide to change and pick up a little, and then bang, rods buckled over, and I know this is a trophy, bring it in at 65cm. As I am unhooking it, the other rod goes off, bring that one in at 60cm. Re-cast, work the plastic, and another one comes in at 60cm as well. Then a darn seal turns up and it all goes quiet, time to pack up and head for home. Still buzzing from the result, and it probably rates as one of the best days fishing I've experienced. I know now that I am totally hooked onto these reds.

All the flatties were caught on plastics, 7inch jerk shad in pearl did the damage. White/Silver in the wriggler did the damage on the bigger model reds. Pannies fell to coutta bait. 3/4 in 5/0 jigheads.

  9. Hey Tony,

Congrats buddy on one good looking red. The conditions look amazing.

Hard to beat those mid weekers.

Where's your partner in crime lol??

    Cheers Daniel

usually fishing comes before work, but not in this instance DOH!

I really need to get my priorities back in order LOL

Tony. you killed me yesterday, How dare you send me pic after pic at work :chair: I was frothing at the mouth.

Im very enviose at that catch, congratulations, you work hard at fishing and that shows through with Great results. :28:

Tell ya what, we've been talking about targeting reds for a couple of years now, something different from the usual kings and hairies. And it is only this year that we've started with the reds, Tony led the way. He puts the time and effort to read up on how to best target reds. He watches ALLLLLL the youtube videos!! LOL, and look at what he produces. Totally deserved!!!

Oh, you got pics Basil? I got a freaken running commentary with pics! :D

Great catch, great Pics! Thanks for sharing.

By the way, you forgot to include the co-ordinates for that spot. :sun:

    Cheers

    Paikea

Sorry bud, for my eyes only :D

  10. Mate, looking at the width of that Yak and it looks like it's got a really flat underside. No outriggers required. I've got something similar in the Ocean Kayak range and I've never felt concerned about tipping over, and I normally fish around the heads of botany Bay.

Are you sure it's 65kg? That seems very heavy. My Yak is only 26kg.

  11. Ive working tomorrow and next week then I think Im taking a week off, the weather better be good.

My wifes relo wants to go fishing this saturday, if I can get out of that one whos in for a belambie trip

I believe Mr Formosan will be heading down that way on Saturday.

  12. Hi Formosan,

Was a great trip,Thumb up to mako sharks they are a great fight and put on a great show when jumping :sun:

Mate my boat is a fiberglass Caribbean 6m does the job fine. If your keen to pull up a few out wide lets organise a trip mate :fishing1::fishing1::fishing1:

    Chris.

Nice one Chris! and did I read a trip out wide? SIGN ME UP! :D

  13. I have been using the Elite-5x DSI for a while now, it's great for shallow water i.e. < 20m, and slow speeds, anything deeper than this and if your traveling more than 10kts, then you lose bottom.

That 60M it states is a bunch of crap! it should say 60M when stationary and perfect clear clean water =).

Haven't had any problems with water getting in or corrosion, and that's with the unit being fully submerged in salt water when the yak flipped and I had to doggy paddle it 50m to shore :ranting2: :ranting2:

If you are planning to use this just on the yak, then it's perfect, otherwise get a HDS.
