Hi Raiders, well decided on a change of scenery to target the elusive mulloway on Thursday morning, but firstly a big thanks to the KFC (you guys know who you are and special thanks to Al and Paul for all the tips and advice).
So loaded up on yakkas at good old trusty molli point was the first point of call at around mid-night, wind was blowing from South to West and everything in between, made it hard to hold the spot I wanted and made getting yakkas really hard, but once the wind stopped, yakkas were filling up the tank quite quickly. Threw in some pillies to try for tailor and managed a few as well.
Then it was up river, got to our spot and dropped anchor and sent live yakkas, yakka fillets and live tailor down. The live yakka get's hit straight away and my mate being a total newbie, fights it like he's fighting a king. Drag cranked up and pulling on it so hard that the line could have snapped even if it was 50lb
, and no second guessing what happens next, he pulls the hook right out!Anyways a good 30 mins goes by and my baitrunner starts singing, let it run for a little bit, engaged and it takes some line, comes in at 65cm, pretty happy about that. Then all goes quiet for a good hour, so decided to get some shut eye. As soon as I start drifting off, the all so familiar sound goes off again, I look up but I see the rods just fine, so I must have just been dreaming
, but then I hear it again and I remembered that I put a rod out front, and the rod is bent almost over board and it's taking drag, run up and pull it in to 78cm, high five my mate and we're up so we start getting into it again. but again, all goes quiet, and again we decide to try and get some sleep.And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I start drifting off, the baitrunner goes off again, this was starting to get annoying!!!
get up and pull it in to 68cm. Got a couple of other runs but missed the hook up. By now, the sun was up and the boats were roaring pass heading to the bay, so it was a good time to pack up and leave. We did try to go for some kings, but with the lack of sleep I felt F!@#!RKED and felt sick as soon as we hit the heads, so made the call to just go home.So here's my tip, put a rod out and go to sleep LOL.

mate! well done!!! and 94cm for a first jewie is bloody awesome! well deserved for the persistence you have put in buddy!
think next time, I will definitely join you on the yak out there, stuff land based, lost count of how many times I had to re-tie the gear after the snags.

Awesome mate, what depth of water do you troll in?
Pretty much between 10-15 metres of water.
Nothing beats a mid week fish, especially kingies with no boats around.
I don't know how you do it!

Hey Mark, yes I have seen some of your videos, awesome editing!! what software are you using?. I am starting to learn how to use the Adobe suite of video editing products to see if I can make some of my previous videos look a little more professional. I have the Hero 2, most of the pictures above are screen grabs from it.

Oh, what a shame!!! A 94cm king on the last cast!!!! Would be happy with that on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or any cast/downrig for that matter' Cheers scratchie!!!

Yeah everything loves squid, especially one that is fresh, so it justs get's picked on until there is nothing left. Stick a yakka down, and it's usually something big that will take it.Hey buddy, awesome king. Looks like the yakkas done the damage again. Water looks great outside. I bet you were thinking what I think when I've had an average day and I'm on my way back in, PLEASE just one, be careful what you wish for lol. Great work once again..

Hi Raiders,
The last batch of kings has been finished so needed to stock up, so a solo mission today to see if I can fix that problem.
On the water mid-morning and got a bunch of these guys
Then headed to get a couple of these guys.
Water isn't the cleanest right now from all the rain, so was a little hard work.
Then it was off to downrig
Landed rat after rat after rat after rat after rat after bonnie after rat (that's 6 rats and a bonnie)
After a couple of hours, called the last pass on a yakka and then head back in, and wouldn't you know it, a good size king jumps on the end, went 94cm.
Sorry for the poor quality photos, really tough to take photos by yourself.
Wouldn't be long now until the kings move on, so hopefully there are still a few more sessions with some good kings still to come.

hey buddy! yeah never diss those yakkas, I got a funny feeling all those times we went out and only ended up with pickers smashing our squid, if we had yakkas, who knows, could have been a different story.

congrats on the 85, I've never caught a kingy LB before, I am sure it's a lot harder than on the boat so awesome job in landing it!

You guys put the hrs in and get the rewards. Would the livies generally be the 2nd option. I've found squid hard in the bay my last few trips, i reckon my next trip i might save the time spent chasing squid for chasing kings with livies.

Hey Luke, lately I have been scoring kings on yakkas as well as squid so I always get some yakkas on the way out, and it seems like the bay is teeming with them so it's a quick 30 mins session.
What I have been noticing is that when there are a lot of pickers around, they tend to always smash your squid and leave nothing left. That's when I pop the yakka down and pickers seem to leave them alone leaving them alone for the kings.

Hi Raiders, well it's been a long summer of hunting kings without a hoodie to show for it. Rats that I have lost count of, with several mixed in the 80cm.
Headed out today with a mate to the bay to see if we can correct that tally. First stop was to load up on yakkas, and did we ever, got about 20 in 30 minutes and some of these would pass as baby kingfish themselves, they actually took some drag
. Next stop was squid, took a little while but we ended up with a few.Then it was the usual DR'ing for kings, several passes went by with nothing but squid coming back headless, decided to whack on a yakka and that did the trick. 'Gunning' it out to deeper waters, and by the bend in the rod, surely looked like a hoodie and by the fight it felt like one as well, but settled for 98cm.
So whacked on another yakka, but all goes quiet after a few passes, decided to change back to kingy candy, and now that did the trick. My mates turn to get on the rod, and the king takes 4 runs, with the drag set at about 10kg, boated it to 102cm. Mates first hoodie and he is stoked. The big kings have been late this season, let's hope they stay around for a little longer.

As Shane mentioned, Navionics is the go, works great. I use it on the boat to mark waypoints, record tracks and so on.
Just download the maps first onto your phone of the area you'll be fishing.
The application relies on satellites to pinpoint your location, not cell tower reception so as long as you can see the sky, you'll be able to use it.

This was another spot mate. As the current was a south current Saturday we fished the south reefs which fire better on a south current. On sunday the current was trickling north, so we fished a spot in close which like the north current.
It's all about the current for us as where we fish. Lots of spot fish really well on the south current but are dead on the north and vice versus!

Very interesting theory Butch! I've got a mate that says the same thing. I put it down to how much nutrients and food flows up or down depending on the location. Make sense as bait schools would follow, and so will the big boys.
And an awesome haul of fish there!!! assume you got the kings on the down rigger?

bad luck on the kings kooks! one knot that never fails me when tieing braid to leader is a bimini twist (which creates a double on the braid) and then doing a reverse albright to the leader. It's the pefect knot when tieing a small diameter line (braid) to thicker leader line. Then use a uni-knot for terminal tackle.
This set up never slips, never breaks, and the only thing you need to worry about is getting the kings off the reefs because once they are there, no knot can save you

we managed to get out today as well and so did the rest of Sydney, boats everywhere! haven't been out on a weekend for a while and I remembered why this morning at the ramp =)
we did end up getting onto a few kings between 70-80cm, so wasn't too bad. Hopefully I'll bump into you on the water one of these days hehe

Only 62cm as I usually lose the battle with the bigger ones. Maybe time to upgrade some heavier gear and yeah you should come out more with the yak boys!!!!

I just got myself a hobie outback, so I can't wait to put it through its paces.
what gear are you using? just wondering if my medium outfit would be able to handle them, I can't imagine bringing my heavy stuff on the yak.

Bad luck on getting busted off. But the gear you are using is definitely not overkill for some of these monsters. You can go lighter but I assume you're fishing around structure, you can pretty much be guaranteed to get reefed.
I preset my saltiga to around 16kg, very heavy, but line still comes off, but very little.
