  1. hi guys, never fished the rose gully - are there safe spots to fish or does it require full gear like cleats etc
  2. I think the real name is Blackspot tuskfish
  3. Hey mate, looks like a blue bone groper. I was living in the Northern Territory and they were really common up there, not sure what it's doing down here! Great eating though!
  4. You are really trying to tackle too many species at once. IMO as a general guide: For bream/flatties, a size 1000 or 2500 would suffice For snapper, 4000 For Jewies/ Kingies, I use a saragoosa 16000 Of course you still might land kingies on the 4000 or even the 2500 but why play games with big fish?
  5. wow that is ugly. I've always wondered if the hump was flesh or cartilage?
  6. hey mate, isn't the pirtek competition is a catch and release comp? You did really well though EDIT: I see you released it!
  7. There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum. I'd recommend searching for jewfish on this forum.
  8. Ate some sashimi and froze the rest. Single hook rig Thanks everyone
  9. Haha I noticed the pike panicking/ getting attacked as the float was going bopping up and down. This kingie was actually foul hooked in its side - so even more lucky i guess
  10. Thanks everyone Pike was around the 30cm mark, hooked only in the scuff of the neck
  11. Hi everyone, I would like to share my report from this morning. Armed with my saragosa 18000 with 70 pound leader and sienna 2500 with 6 pound leader, I started the day with a 5am wakeup and quick drive to a pier just south of Watsons bay. First hookup on the 6 pound rod was something fairly big which reefed me...damn. Ten minutes later I hooked onto a nice pike which I brought in and used as live bait on the big rod. I threw the pike out under a float and waited 20 minutes and saw the float bop up and down, 30 seconds later, I'm on and it's BIG. It was peeling line off me fast so I quickly tightened it to full pressure and it started to slow down. After a short battle of about one minute I saw the yellow flash and managed swim it to shallow water where I grabbed its tail. Though it was a short battle due to my heavy gear (some may consider 50lb mainline and 70 leader overkill), my first ever kingie will never be forgotten. Its power was unprecedented and should be respected. Thanks all, Chris
  12. hi there, I haven't heard of anyone using an elastic. You only really need a thumb nail size of weed on the hook, what is the quality of your cabbage is it leafy or stringy? if its leafy you shouldn't have too much trouble...
  13. Hope they are okay, it was a terrible day to be out.
  14. Hi guys, You may have noticed my other topic! My saragosa and live fibre arrived today and I love them. Now being a newbie to thick lines, I'm struggling to tie my 70pd leader to my hooks and swivels. A quick internet search reaveals a host of suggestions, some bing the uni knot which is the only knot I really use, even this seems difficult to get several loops around... What is everyone's thoughts? should I persevere and keep at the uni knot? Cheers, Chris
  15. I have officially bought the Saragosa 18000, Live Fibre 7' 15-24kg, 300yrds 50lb super slick power pro and 300m 70lb Schneider mono. I hope I have enough line for the larger spool - with some mono left over for leader. Yay or Nay? ))
  16. The support for the Saragoosa has sold me on paying that little bit more. Thanks guys Also how does Sunline super pe 50pd sound. What weighting mono backing do you think is ideal?
  17. Thanks for the suggestions. I've identified the Wilson Live fibre 15-24kg 7' and Ugly stick Bluewater 15-24kg 7'. Both seem to be durable, strong and long lasting. Can anyone vouch for these? Even though the saragosa looks better, I still might go for the salina 10000 since it's only around $230. Unless someone can PM me a good deal haha! Cheers, Chris
  18. Hi guys, Wanted your opinion on my projected kingfish setup fishing off wharves with live bait (occasionally with lures). Eventually it'll be used on the kayak I plan to buy. I want a strong setup as I was absolutely killed today by something massive. I only use spinning reels lol I'm thinking of a Silstar crystal powertip 6'6 8-15kg matched with a Okuma Salina 10000. I plan for 50pd braid. Can anyone vouch for this setup? Would the Salina 18000 go better? I've heard the saltist or saragossa are great reels too. Suggestions please Chris
  19. Hey mate, they are two different species, use yakka to catch kingies!
  20. I've been trying to catch whiting on poppers but its hard...How deep was the water? How far can you cast them out?
  21. I caught one last week in the harbour too, definitely frigate. But i guess you could say that you caught a Tuna, since they are part of the tuna family.
