  1. Hey guys looking for a popper rod for whiting and flathead, that could also double as a soft plastics for similar species. The contenders are trion, samaki skitch and shimano raider 2, all around the 1-4 or 2-4 kg range. I know these rods will go well with SP but not sure about HB. I fish LB Any recommendations? Cheers, Chris
  2. Caught a watsons bay spinning...bonito or mac tuna?
  3. Well you have numerous ferry wharves around that area that are good for beginners. Not sure which though since I don't fish that area Though the government does not recommend eating fish west of the harbour bridge due to dioxins. Maybe another start is to go to a nearby tackle shop to answer any questions you have
  4. A good place to start is Fishing for Dummies (seriously). I used it when I started out and it helped considerably. In general any fishing book helps, I also have "Australian fish and how to catch them" by Richard Allan, which is an amazing book. As you progress you will gain tons of knowledge about everything including how to target specific species. There are plenty of good fishing spots around sydney, it could help to state your location. Remember to keep them clean and follow size and bag regulations too
  5. Hi guys, Thinking of targetting blue swimmers for the first time with a crab pot, can anyone vouch for sydney harbour, particularly the eastern suburbs? Is it as simple as dropping the crab pot straight off the wharf? Thanks Chris
  6. Its watsons bay ferry wharf, have fun but keep it clean...went today aswell for nothing, how depressing!
  7. Cheers everyone, I think ill have to go back tomorrow morning! Honestly, the one the got away was soul shattering
  8. Hi everyone, Just got back from perhaps my funnest and best day out fishing near watsons bay. First up, casted a half pillie out on my 1-4kg rod, left it there for a bit and checked the rod after 5 mins and felt a heavy weight, can't say it was much of a fight, just a dead weight. Came up as a nice 55cm flatty, stoked! Later on, I get a massive hit, especially for a newbie, it was pulling line off so quickly, called it for a kingy! here's hoping!. Eventually after the biggest fight of my fishing life, a nice 37cm Snapper. NICE. Caught on yellowtail fillet. Just after that I get an even bigger hit right under the pylons but I was too slow to set the drag and it cut me off. Wonder what it was. Next up after finishing all my bait, put some yellowtail guts on my unweighted handline and pulled up a nice 30cm bream to end the day. All in all a great morning.
  9. Why do people eat salmon or cod roe? Squid egg caviar...wouldn't have a clue though
  10. The above post isn't too much help. But honestly if its bream, whiting, flathead, you are after, I would consider downsizing your line size to say 6 pound, rod weight to 2 to 5 kg and reel size to a 2500 size. With leaders you can always change the poundage, say 12 for flathead if you want to compensate for their teeth perhaps, And 4-6 for Bream and whiting perhaps. Help that helps
  11. I have about $100 to spend and an looking for a dedicated sp rod! It will be for estuary species, flatties, bream and whiting I'll be fishing with a Sienna 2500 and 10pd braid but with a variety of pd leaders for different fish I think the Trion is the way to go, most likely the SP702M 3-6kg Question is can anyone vouch for this rod? is it nice and flickly but strong to handle big bream?
  12. Hey guys It's my 21st soon and my girlfriend wants to take me out on a fishing charter on Sydney Harbour , but we are stumped on which one to choose since it will only be with 2 people so it doesn't make sense to hire a whole boat! Would love to be put onto some kingies, something reasonably priced and a nice ship - it doesnt have to be out far in the sea either! Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks
  13. Hey mate, were you fishing sydney harbour? Because I caught some nice mullet not to long ago, was looking forward to eating them but only can eat 50g per 3 months. The worst for any fish!! I'm east harbour
  14. Thanks everyone I can't resist and i'll probably head to rose bay tomorrow to cast some lures around...and this time, for the first time...i wont bring bait!!!
  15. Headed to Hermit Bay this morning, the fishing is never really any good but its quiet. Very nice day, no wind I could see heaps of leather jackets but i wasnt really interested in catching them since they don't put much of a fight. Anyway threw some pumpkinseed SP's around, hooked onto a nice flounder but it got off. Next cast and my very first fish on any lure! A nice just legal flatty and my first in ages!
  16. Yeap that's definitely them. Thanks

    Fish Id

Pretty sure the trevally is a silver trev but the gold stripe..i'm not sure. The second one who knows...
  18. Tried to get on the blackies today but nothing...I snorkeled later on in the day to check it out and really only one or two down there, whereas 2 months ago they were heaps! Are they a winter species?
  19. Just got my rod in the mail, i'm very happy with it. A bit heavy but who cares One question fishingphase, the both sections of the rod have different guides, On the lower half it has a large metal (silver) guide and on the top half, there are standard black guides. It's not like it makes a massive difference, but yeh, just looks weird, do yours come like this also? Might take it out for a go later on today, just have to finish this assessment
  20. Thanks for the help swordfisherman, I just tried putting the alvey on a rod and it's fine haha should double check Yes the Alvey looks like a interesting challenge, I've never surf fished before and I'm excited! I'll be getting the rod tonight with some 6kg platypus lo stretch line. Some ganged hooks aswell! fishingphase, does the wilson have an "open runner" to help wind the line back on?
  21. Hi, I recently bought an Alvey 600BC for surf fishing for anything up to salmon. Now I have several questions about a suitable rod. I'm probably going to get the Wilson 12 foot 6144. Does anyone know how it goes? Any other recommendations? Only looking to spend under $200! I'll run 12-15 pd line. Lastly, I have tried to seat my alvey on a spinning rod just for fun and have noticed that it doesn't sit well. By this I mean that it looks like I do not have a black (plastic?) attachment that helps my alvey sit well. Sorry to steal this image from another post but it does not look like I have the attachment between the reel seat and the alvey. All that I have is the metal shown in this next photo and i find that this isn't very sturdy to say the least. Am I worrying for nothing? Or is this black attachment something I need?
  22. Well said Finin, I've had numerous people approach me and tell me fishing is illegal. If only they knew! Some people have also acted fairly aggressively. What can you do! I'll be there tomorrow haha But a few common sense rules should apply i.e. not fishing in the baths on a really hot summers day! Respect the use of the area of others. As fishermen we should have our morals and etiquette, even though other people may not.
