    Braid

The bass in the Nepean didn't mind your mono...I find that fireline is fine and I find that when fishing light lures the braid will allow you to cast a little further due to a smaller diameter line and therefor less wind resistance...that's the theory. When bottom bashing in heavy current the braid will allow you to hold bottom with a lighter sinker for the same diameter/resistance reasons above.
  2. Thanks Tonys I spoke to a few people and ended up giving it a miss as it sounds a bit dodgy.
  3. Raiders, Planning on heading out to Lower Portland (on the Hawkesbury) tomorrow, I am after some advise on a boat ramp in the area? i have read that there is one at Skeleton Park Rocks Reserve (West Portland Rd, Lower Portland) but looking on Google Earth i can't find one?
  4. I have just gone from a 6lb to an 8lb bomb. I have a humminbird 798ci sounder and with the 8lb bomb I can actually see the bomb depth on the sounder which I find really beneficial. I couldn't see this with the 6lb so my preference would be to go an 8lb.
  5. Mike 2153 and Scratchie +1 I did it a few weeks ago for the first time. yakkas, pilchards and Cali squid all caught Dolphin Fish. We only caught fish round the legal length, I reckon you need to have your 40lb handy if the bigger ones are around. We went in a 5.3m boat out to the Broken Bay Fad which is 22km out. We came back into a westerly with a bit of chop around and while it wasn't unsafe it's a bit of a grind driving back (about 40 mins). Good luck and take ensure you take all the right safety precautions. Keep one to eat by the way they are great on the tooth. Looking forward to your report.
  6. I agree, totally enjoy the prep before a big day out or better still a fishing weekend away.
  7. What did you end up going with Witha?
  8. The white handle are Dexter Russel. They are apparently used used by fish mongers and my local butcher uses them. After doing my homework I grabbed one for about $40. Can't go wrong.
  9. Raiders, Had a great day out on Josh’s Boat Devil Ray on Sunday. We fished the Central Coast (Broken Bay/Barrenjoey) and picked up - 3 Flathead 3 Jewfish (59cm PB for me) 2 Bonito 1 Snapper 1 Tailor Here is a short video with some of the results. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ioHI4jiKj4
  10. Hi Brian, Yeah that are a great size. We ended up getting them at west head.
  11. Meg126 We had the same issue with the sweep while trying to get yakkas, we were initially dropping the bait jig all the way to the bottom as soon as we changed the depth to just below the surface we had a dozen yakkas in about 5 mins. Give it a try next time you have that problem.
  12. Sounds like an awesome day. Dollies are taking it to the next level and a fish I'm realy keen to target but probably a bit beyond my boats reach/capability. Would love to take you up on that offer to show us around up there at some stage.
  13. Cheers Gents, Yeah we fished Juno, Flint, Barrenjoey and Pittwater. More fish is the only thing that would have improved an awesome weekend.
  14. Raiders, Had a great weekend camping with some mates up at Patonga on the Central Coast. There were 7 of us with 3 boats. The fishing was a bit slower than recent outings in the area but picked up some nice Flatty’s, a Kingfish and some nice Jewfish. We also enjoyed a few cold ones watching the footy on Friday and Saturday night at the pub. Here is a short video and some pics of some of the results. Great trip, cant wait until the next one.
  15. Great read. I'm heading up to Patonga for a similar weekend this weekend with a good group of mates. This post is certainly motivating. When you say you were at Patonga and came in close to get 4 inch yakkas...was that in Patonga itself? I'd love to know where as we generally go to west head to get yakkas and having a spot at Patonga would save me some time and fuel. Any pointer would be awesome. No stress if you can't.
  16. That's not true. Love the yaks. Wouldn't mind one myself at some point.
  17. Thanks for the feedback guys! Gazza, the big guy had fear in his eyes when the hammerhead came into the boat thats for sure.
  18. Cheers guys, I spoke to a charter operator who fished the area yesterday and he also mentioned it was a quiet day compared to the solid days he has been having recently.
  19. Cheers Witha, yes just the kingfish targeted and caught on that rig.
  20. Raiders, Had a good day out onboard Devil Ray. We had a great start to the morning filling the live bait tank very quickly. We headed into Pittwater and slow trolled at 2 knots with the yakkas in tow (behind a size 10 ball sinker in the absence of a downrigger). On approach to Scotland Island we hooked our only kingfish for the day (you can see the catch in the video below). We decided to head outside Barrenjoey and also tried the valiant wreck for zilch. We then had a quick flick on the Pittwater side of Palm Beach (opposite the golf course) and headed into a spot not far from Juno Point. We ended up with having a decent day with the following results .(some caught in the video but plenty missed due to a few issues with the camera) 1 x Kingfish (undersize) 4 x Flathead 2 x Bream 2 x Tailor 3 x Snapper (undersize) 1 x Jewfish (undersize) 1 x Hammerhead shark Another very enjoyable day out on the water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv9Ntj_FqQQ
  21. Cheers Downtofish, I'll give one a crack.
  22. White Gulp Nemesis are worth adding to your plastics collection.
  23. Hi Tom_125, The downrigger I am using is only a cheap one as I initially was not sure if downrigging was a technique I would enjoy. I was still using cable it's hard to tell but it appears that cable has snapped down close to the bomb before braking the downrigger which to be honest is a bit surprising given it's only plastic. From what I read people who downrigg a lot appear to be going with the braid in place of cable due to less resistance/noise, your snag reason and no salt build up issues on the cable.
  24. Cheers Downtofish, Is this the one? And what sped do you find works best?
