G'day Raiders, Time has come to purchase a new rod and reel. Because, why the hell not!! So now decisions need to be made. Do i stick with a spin reel or is it time to master a baitcaster? Thinking that it will be my main yak set up. But will also be used land based. That way i can leave it down the coast unless i think i will need it during the week when up in sydney and save it getting damaged when its chucked in the boot with the miles of kids stuff. Main fish id be intending to catch, bass, bream, flathead whiting etc. More than likely will be using hard bodies, plastics and bait, just depending on the target species of the day but am really getting into hard bodies and spinner baits for the bass ATM. To be used in creeks, rivers and bays nothing too heavy duty. What's everyone's thoughts? What do you prefer? Am not concerned with the issues of bird nests and such with the bait casters, but have never used one. Happy to put in the time to figure it out properly. Happy to spend up to about $500 and get something good. Thanks in advance. Sorry if this topic has been covered time and again. Had a looksee but couldn't find anything to cover it all. Cheers Tara

Thanks Fellas. They are so much fun to catch. Counting down the days till easter so i can get back out there and drag the yak over the rocks to the next section of the creek. I wonder how close to the Shoalhaven river they will get before there is too much salt? These were also my first HB lure fish landed too. Cheers Tara

G'day Raiders, Got down the south coast on the weekend and got out on the kayak every morning to target Bass. First morning was very misty. Being fairly new to bass fishing getting one or 2 is always good. first cast and bam.... When does that ever happen? iv got to thank Mattfinn for the lure suggestions. Almost all fish were caught on the Taylor made cicada Couple more cast and it was on again. Only small fish but I was cheering. Not much happened for a while, sun was starting to get up there and thought I might have left my start a bit late and then I was on again. After that it was time to put the sunnies on and there was no more fishy action on the surface. Was time to head back for fresh eggs. The next morning was very quiet on the water. Not much happening at all then all of a sudden managed to land these 2 from the same snag. Once again, sunnies on, no more surface fish but quite a few follows from water dragons. Had to shoo them away before the climbed aboard the yak. Last morning no takes at all on the cicada. maybe the cows were spooking them. changed to a small spinner bait, not really thinking I would catch anything and first cast with the new lure and it was engulfed by a 10cm bass. Caught a few more small one with the kids, they love getting out on the water in the kayaks. All in all a great weekend with about 8 fish landed. not too bad for a 1k stretch of creek. Cheers Tara

Took the yak out a lot over the weekend. Took a bit to get used to so I didn't get too much fishing in but was good to get used to handling, steering and launching off the rocks. Luckily I didn't fall out (ha ha ha) Managed to get decent fishing time in yesterday and after persisting with rescuing lures and plastics from trees and submerged branches managed to hook up to a 18cm Bass. Didn't have my phone on me for fear of it ending up in the drink so no pics, but so stocked to hook a fish on my first weekend of yak fishing. Corn seemed to help. G'day Raiders, I Finally got a YAK!! Taken quite a few months to actually get around to buying one. Scouring all the usual places for a decent second hand one that wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg or weigh 100kg. Decided to buy a new one instead. A Terminator 10. Ended up spending almost double what I wanted to but, soo happy with it. Cant wait to get it in the water. Hopefully Saturday afternoon or early Sunday morning. Plan is to christen it with a bass. G'day Raiders, Had a chance to do some fresh water fishing over xmas down at my folks place in Berry. I put in about 10 hours over a couple of days and managed to snag this beauty. I know she is small but was so stoked in getting at least one. My Niece also got one but gave a little kick before I could get the phone out to take a snap. Mine was caught on Slim SwimZ in Watermelon and the second was a 2" grub. Not sure of the colour but was pearly with black flecks. On the last day there was a long finned eel cursing around my legs that I didn't particularly appreciate so we hightailed it outa the water. Keen as to get a kayak down there to get to some deeper water as I was standing in water well above a comfortable height. Cheers for reading. Tara

G'day Raiders, Have bought myself a Keg Master series 4 for xmas and have had a multitude of requests of cider on tap (once the 50L of home brew is gone on xmas day) Wondering if anyone has a tried and tested recipe and method for hard apple or pear or mixed cider? This will still leave 2 kegs for beer so don't worry. Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Cheers Tara

G'day Raiders, Had our first family holiday last week up at Nelson Bay. Work had been manic lately so we were all really looking forward to getting away for a couple of days and some great weather. The weather really didn't want to play its part though. Cautious of all the marine zones up there I headed to a local tackle shop to get an idea of some spots that we could take our 3yr old twins to and was told that the break wall was the go. Headed down armed with some prawns hoping that the rain and wind would hold off just long enough to get the kids interested. Chucked a line in with one of my girls while the other was off getting ice creams. Handed the rod to the little one and said hang on tight. Before I could get a prawn on the other rod she was almost going over the rocks. Down I scramble to try and land this fish which isn't the easiest of tasks in thongs. Get back up the top and here comes the other little one screaming you’ve got one already???? They were so excited to see "big bad Barry" up close and have a few quick snaps. Daughter No. 1. 27cm bream and first fish = cheering. Prawn on again and handed the rod to No.2 and within 15 seconds the reel is screaming and she is doing anything she can to hold on. Down the rocks I go again but this time the fish was trying to cut away on the rocks. Figuring that it was all over I let the line go slack and off the fish goes again. Finally get him up and it’s a Black drummer. A first for me and first fish all together for No.2 as well. Back up to the top to show the girls and a pelican has come over to have a look. Turn around and there is 3 or 4 on the other side I’m thinking by this point I better hurry up or they are going to try and get the drummer, look other way and there is even more. It was like something out of a monte Python movie. Quick pic and measure at about 28cm and back he goes. By this stage it was getting really windy and all snags. Called it a day. Headed out to Salamander bay the next day with the same prawns. Few old bloke fishing there but not much happening. Kids are happy feeding the fish. Winding in to call it a day and some thing has taken the prawn and gone for a short run. Get it up and I’m thinking what the hell it, maybe a long tom. I had no idea really. Swam it over to where the old blokes were and asked for a hand as I didn't know about spikes or anything and he said it was definitely a long tom with no spikes but some hell teeth. Another first. Pretty happy with that. Few snaps with the camera and not his teeth and back he went. The rest of the fishing was for naught but to have both girls catch their first fish and it not be a 10cm bream was fantastic. They asked every day if we could go fishing so hopefully they now have the bug too. I swear it was this big...... Thanks for reading. Cheers Tara
