  1. Hey Raiders, been a little while since my last post but iv been busy entertaining a guest! my mate form back home in the UK, Angus, has moved out with us indefinitely and seeing what an awesome time ive been having the past year he wanted to learn how to fish! and so even though every time i have taken him the weather has been against us we've caught fish! so here goes. firstly i took him to Cronulla on nice calm over cast day, which soon turned into a howling wind and horizontal rainy day! but with a quick lesson in baiting up and casting he was off, and within less than a minute of his first wet line he was on! Boom first cast, first fish, And a hefty bream! bet he thought this fishing stuff was easy! we didnt stay long as the weather closed in and we only managed a small flatty in the next hour. and so our next adventure took us to the stones where we tried for some blackfish. i turned up to the mark an hour and a half early to check the swell and conditions which were ok, very wet but ok, and so i started fishing, and hour and a half and not a down. Angus turns up. a quick lesson in baiting weed and where to cast and what too look for, 2nd drift and ERRRRR RIKKI I THINK IV CAUGHT THE BOTTOM??? err no you havnt you plank haha which he soon realized when his first ever blackfish started going nuts, and so with some frantic lessons in how to land a black fish in the swell which probably did more harm than good in that i just confused the hell out of him he landed it. 40cm on the nose! what a cracking first blackfish! wihtin 20 mins Bomm the jammy buggers on again! but not a blackfish???? a DRummer! he lands it im stoked for him! and he's loving it. he went on to get two more blackies, tallying a total of 3 blackies and a drummer, i got one all evening and our mate cobba12 nilled. Angus is on fire and loving it and i think its fair to say he's hooked, which a great feeling for me..love it.
  2. leather jacket caught genuinely in the mouth on weed intended for blackfish lol a stonker!
  3. does anyone know if the river between Campsie and Petersham in the inner west holds carp or is it too brackish?
  4. we need to venture out to different beaches me thinks. bondi seems to produce one or two good fish a session if your lucky but never a good session with plenty of fish. Although the good fish are pretty substantial. i reckon the beaches around tama and bronte could produce in numbers as the salmon are obviously in the area during the day and they obviously dont head over to bondi in numbers and so the rest could potentially head south to those beaches? keen to try out me theory sometime soon if your are bud.
  5. nice report mate. good read, lets see some more! looking forward to another blackfish session sometime in the future if your keen Gilbey
  6. mate come out on my boat! its parked up on the rocks off mkenzies, cant take it anywhere, doesnt have an engine and is made of rock... well it is the rock... but its the closest thing to a boat i have what d'ya say? $50 petrol n ill take ya out for a whole day! n ill even bring ya some gear seeing as yours doesn't work Gilbs
  7. finally the man succeeds! tell ya what ill buy you some frickin mono hows that, im sick of your whining about braid, "oh braid, your the reason i dont catch fish, your the reason im an angry person, your the root cause of all my lifes problems..." take some concrete pills and get a bit of stretch in life and we'll all be happier ps nice work, im jealous. and the weather here is miserable lol
  8. haha Cobba, we are a bad omen together, although we did catch an intended species in each others presence for the first time in 3 sessions the other day...it was caught by me, but ill take it as a team effort as it was your call to move..lol take some credit boyo! the mother land is cold, wet but very fishy, have a fridge full already but i canny wait to smash it up again in sydney come middle of october! ill bring back some UK fishing tackle gems, for us all to share. ps you need a LUCKY CHARM for sydney fishing. find it, keep it, fish with it, and fish with it, and keep fishing with it, until you catch... and then you can say it was because of your LUCKY CHARM and it will then forever bring you luck. ha

  12. Haha i went there last week and it was exactly what all the raiders warned me bout on here lol just naked old men standing hands on hips, pointing their shriveled wands right at ya an saying..."any luck?" and thankfully my answer was fairly short, simply "not yet" lol although i did land a nice salmon around 50cm which unhooked itself on the rocks and also freed itself before a snap could be taken and a flounder, just as i was leaving a haud of asian guys headed down to my spot equipped with their night fishing gear, aiming for some tailor, so they said, but i reckon they had more chance of scoring with one of the old codgers! Gilbey
  13. hey raiders, i had a tip a while ago to fish off a mark near the nudist beach just past camp cove in the harbour. was wandering if anyone had fished the area before or recently, and could maybe suggest what i can expect/methods i should apply. also if anyones keen to join PM me. cheers Gilbey
  14. blackfish are a must for winter! there so cheap an easy to set up for, and the fish are relatively easy to catch, just give it a go and you'll learn heaps so quickly and then you have a species you can always rely on when others fail. Gilbey
  15. has anybody fished manly resevoir before? and can give some pointers on location etc? im thinking to try something different tomorrow and am pondering on giving the carp a go. thanks
  16. just found a nice channel about mid way mate
  17. nice fish mate! 40 + blackies are a good effort. bravo.
  18. Bondi beach 6pm-9pm last night. PB tailor at 61 cm happy days and a PB 4ft + banjo shark, very happy days. all on 8lb mainline 20lb trace and pilchards. the end.
  19. do the math... if its 95 then the last part of his right middle finger would have to be 4cm+. maybe bigfella just has huge fingers lol, suppose its in his name.
  20. hey bud, good question. you should keep your line in contact with your float at all times. you can have a little bow in the line but you still need to be able to move the float with a flick of the rod. i test mine regularly by just flicking my rod to the side by a couple ft and the float moves we're all good. you want it this way because you want to be able to react quickly to a down. and so with a couple quick turns of the reel and hefty strike you can set the hook. hope this helps Gilbey
  21. cheers ginko, the surf was up around 2-3ft mark, so not too big, an i actually use 2/0 hooks with a pennel rig, i find it easier. its where you have one sliding hook on your trace with a tied hook at the end. you feed the tied hook through the tail end and then feed it through just before the head so that the point is showing. then with the sliding hook slide it down to about 3/4's up the pillie and fix it by wrapping the trace around the shank about 4 times and then embed it all the way through, and finish with a half hitch on the tail. i rarely loose fish or miss hook ups, although i did fail to hook one on this particular night lol. but it works for me so i stick with it. ive caught salmon on a size eight hook for black fish but i wouldn't recommend that lol.
  22. that salmons never 95cm.....lol
  23. So my recent fishing excursion took me to the southern beaches, arrived at 6pm last night knowing that high tide was 6.45 and the surfers would be gone by then. the surf looked perfect and i found a beautiful deep gutter running parallel to beach. so set up me n my mate with two to hook pennel rigs, 4oz leads, and whole pillies for bait. some time past and with nothing to show for it, and dead on high tide, i was standing talking to my pal joe when the rod tip bent over i lifted to feel nothing and upon inspection realised half my pillie had been taken clean off.. gaargh. ive been after one of these salmon off the beach for a while now, well 2 sessions lol so i was so keen to catch one. the next cast after my bite i messed up, and the rig ended up landing about 10ft from the beach, (far too close in i thought) but i thought back to when i used to fish with my uncle and he always used to say "its the casts you mess up on that often produce fish" and so with this mind i left it. 5 mins later BOOM im on! the fish was already in the surf so i was didnt have much stability to fight, an timing it with the waves i hauled it up the beach. a TAYLOR! not the intended species but ill take it a nice one to...went 47cm! we fished on for another hour or so with nothing but chit chat to keep us going and fending off walkers and their dogs from our catch and bait. i was mid conversation, talking about whether full moons effect fishing or not when i felt a tap tap on my rod tip. i went into silent mode, my mate wanderd why i had just stop talking lol, then a few seconds later tap..tap...Boom! fish on! this one put up an extraudinary fight taking me at least 100 paces down the beach taken heaps of line from the reel, i was fishing 8lb mono all the way through to a 20lb trace so didnt wana tighten the drag too much. after a good ten minutes of great runs i saw the fish leap out of the surf..a salmon! get in, and so again using the waves i hauled it up the beach my mate joe ran down to bring it up to saftey, i remember thinking how chuncky it looked in his arms, i was stocked, i picked up the fish realising it was a stonker! well to me anyways. she went 73cm, not sure how heavy, but she was seriously built, how heavy do you guys think it may have gone? so anyways after a quick few snaps and soaking up the awesomeness we returned her to live another day. so happy we went on to catch 2 more flathead, just under legal, and my mate lost 2 fairly decent fish. we left when the bait ran out happy days. going to head back beginning of next week.
