  6. So spent this weekend in Jervis bay and managed to get one arvo out on the rocks with my mate matt i was staying with. the swell was low and the weather was perfect. i had a good feeling. got down to my spot off governors head. set up matt with a floating pillie sitting about 20 ft under the water. within minutes he pulled in his first fish...a pike! mean while i fished my blackfish set up in the hope for some blackies in around the rocks. about 10 mins pass an i hear my mate scream WTF!!! a gannet had swooped down from the sky and plunged straight down on top of the float and pick off the pillie form 20ft down. it spat the hooks as it flew away lol matt was in a little shock, he thought he had been smashed my giant fish lol. i gave up on the blackies and using the same gear i wacked on a pilled and sent it out to join matt. after about half hour of nothing, i get a down and boom its a trevally, put up a good fight on my light blackie gear. things go quiet again after that for about another half an hour an so i decide to stick a pillie down in the depths, wihtin minutes the rod buckles over and im in! there were quite a few big head bangs and line was taken from my reel but just before we saw the fish it bit through the line, we reckoned it was a shark of some sort. the next cast we hooked into something a little smaller and was pretty much a dead weight but turned out to be a bottom dwelling shark, but not sure what species?? i also landed my first seargant baker then the light was getting low and the fishing had slowed and we had both resorted back to our float set ups with pillies. gazing around we saw the whales, jumping and breaching, was amazing and we totally got sucked in, next thing i know i feel my rod tugging out of my arms...im in! i shout. matt jumps down the cliff with the net, this fish has some serious kick on my blackfish set up, line streams from the reel. i didnt want to tighten the drag too much because i didnt think my 6lb trace would hold. matt braved the swell to land the fish with net. a bonito! and my first at that! was proper stocked as i thought they were a summer fish only and as i havnt been in auz long enough to experience the summer fishing yet, i was well chuffed. so a good arvo, good feed. good times, cant wait to go back.
  7. does anyone know what species this fish is and could i have eaten it? thanks.

  12. just thought id share my excitement at catching my first blackie on my homemade floats. the water was murky after the recent rain, and havnt fished the harbour this murky before so was jubiuos as to whether i would get results, but it didnt bother me to much cause i was mainly there to test the floating action of my home made floats. clipped on 4 small shot weights onto my rig set up with the new float flicked it out, plop, 3, 4 seconds later it stood up beautifully. loved it. was a good evening to landing 8 in total. happy days. see how i made my floats here : http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=57229
  13. first fish on my home made float! love it. both floats worked a treat. will never buy a float again

  15. we were using about 2kg weights, paternosters rig with baby octopus for bait, mono trace around the 100kg mark i think, and circular hooks. lost a few sinkers on the snags but the rig were set up to lose them and not the rig. Gilbey
  16. cheers mate yeah we did, i cant wait for a next time err about an half hour of cruising and and the same trawling. Gilbey
  17. sometimes fish sport different colours at night and day and thus can appear a different species, as an example a fish i worked with in the med, the dentex, looks like this in the day and the very same fish looks like this at night im not an expert on the black rockfsh but it could be a case if diurnal fluctuation in colour, which occurs in many fish many of which you would never know. 18. so yesterday morning i got up at 03:20am ready for the day ahead at the browns. it was my first time there and so i was extremeley excited. i nice and brisk cycle at 4am to my host for the day, GAROUPA's house saw me getting pulled by the police for having no lights on the back of my bike, typical! not a good way to start but they let me go with a slapped wrist so wasn't too bad. so we arrived sorted out the gear and headed out from botany. we trawled some lures once off the shelf only to land a few striped tuna but it was still exciting as id never had any tuna action before, and watching it nail the lure on the surface was an epic sight. so anyway we arrived at the browns greeted by glorious conditions. we baited up the bog alvey set ups and dropped them down over the underwater mountain. within minutes we were into fish, mario let me bring up the first one, a Gemfish and a nice one to! with the next drop i was given charge of one of the reels and again withing minutes boom! we was in again! this time landing and massive blue eyed cod, AMAZING! i was so stoked, couldnt stop smiling. we continued to drift for the day and reached our catch limit of gemmies and landed a few more blue eyes. was an epic day and so chuffed to finally get out on the boat. big thanks to GAROUPA for taking me out i had an epic time, and now have enough food to feed my house 10 times over. amazing. smiles all round.
  19. Ok so last week when the rains were hitting us hard, i had a few days off and planned to go fishing, i braved it one day, but stayed in the next and thought what fish related thing could i do, so i sorted all my tackle and decided to have a go making my own blackfish floats. so using things i found around the house i got some gear together. i found an old diused bike helmet sporting some very nice hard polysteryene and some cheap ass chopsticks in the draw. so i peeled off the outer layers of the helmet to reveal the polystyrene i then carved it up with my penknife (it was pretty tough so i had to saw it) into managable chunks and squeezed them on the chop sticks. then using sciccors a knife and a file i whittled them down into float shapes. then i got the next stage sorted, where i needed some swivels, fishing line and paints. i carved out little grooves at the top and bottom of the floats, and using the fishing line i attached the swivels to the floats, heres a close up of one. and so i was now ready to paint. and so using some $3 acrylics i painted them in different colours, and finished them off with my girlfriends nail varnish top coat to make them water proof. now to try them out! and lets hope they work, i cant wait.
