  3. Sunday morning the alarm went off at 0340am much to the disgust of the lady next to me, we hop in the car and head to our destination. we arrive at 04.45 and its still dark we begin our journey along the rocks. we reach our spot and get baits out by 5.15 just as the first effects of daylight are happening. no immediate action on baitd but as soon as our lures hit the water the fish were biting, frustratingly we kept droppng alot of the fish and so for the first hour besides a few trevally nothing was landed. come 0630 im retrieving my lure at top speed, i feel a take, but it drops i keep reeling and as the lure reaches the surface just in the swash zone boom! big swirl fish on! the fish dove immediatly and had a 20-30yard run for the bottoom, uvkily its deep. i work him back up to the surface and whilst doing so the baited float goes off! double hook up! the big salmon on the squid soon make himself clear and somehow evades capture. back to the mystery fish. as it reaches the surfaces it dive once more, screaming line off the reel, as it approaches the bottom, ping!!! .........the worst feeling ever. thinking i had been done on the rocks i retrieve devistated, and upon inspection we find the fish actually bent out my snap swivel!! ouch. so re rig, without the snap swivel, first cast back in the mix, couple cranks from the depths boom! fish on again, again big runs for the bottom, i just want to see what it is i thought! after a few more tense runs, we see colour.....yellow colour...ITS A KING, A KING, A KING is screamed, iv been after a king since last summer and yet to get one, my heart is in my mouth as it takes more runs down along the rocky ledge, no no no no no, were the onky words from there on in, lol. finally i get the fish up over the ledge hand the rod to fellow raider Angle, climb down the rock face, onto the ledge to collect my prize.....my first ever king, to say i was stoked is understatment. i was over the moon. you know that shaking feeling you get after catching a dream fish, i had that for about half an hour, and i loved it. Thanks to fellow raiders Angle and Cobba12 who made the session even better, what a day. we went on to catch some bonnies salmon and many trevally, and saw the whales a numerous dolphins. sooo worth getting up early for. if only he missus could understand.... Cheers Raiders

  6. And now i guess its back to the stones, with other people, and the good old blackfish.... i dont know whether to be excited or cry.
  7. i was defiantly counting my lucky stars on this one. and even though i would work 12-13 hours a day, to know i had some new bit of coastline to explore and some awesome fishing to look forward to, in the evenings, and days off, got me through every day no worries. if only real life could be as easy. and what gets me, is the station owner hardly ever visits the coast!!!!!!! and he's been there 35+ years! unbelievable. he said he was glad someone was taking advantage of it haha.
  8. cheers boys, and thanks Tom for the ID i have never caught any species of threadfin before and to be honest didnt even know there was separate species. so thanks, yes i did eat them, the first was on the open camp fire on the beach. Beautiful to say the least
  9. so for the past 3 months ive been over west doing my 3 months on a station to extend my visa, and lo and behold i land a job on the coast, where by, the station has 45km of completely private coastline, a fishermans dream!! and after 21 days of solid work ,without as much as an smidgen off, i get an afternoon to my self so i hope on the bike and headed to the coast to start my epic adventure, and from that evening on i was hitting the coast every oppotunity i could as the fishing was, to put it simply, incredible. Now im not going to sit here and recount 3 months of amazing fishing, but what i will do is show you a few/lots of photos of my adventures. enjoy. 45cm yellowfin bream productive beach session very long long tom beautiful flatty spotted cod pink snapper nice reefy, no idea what species though?? my first threadies off the beach my first tahwine another productive trip to the beach baldchin groper, tastiest fish of the entire trip! The places i fished were just beautiful, and i cant wait to go back, here are few extras. Thanks for viewing. And if you ever get the chance, go to shark bay!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gilbsta
  10. but thats just nasty..... we'll hunt him down together boyo upon my return! so start singing... "when will i see youuuuu aaagain? good luck up in noosa brother!
  11. So i popped out this arvo to harbour on the hunt for some blackfish, geared up, baited up with weed as per usual. during the session i get a slow down, so i pause, wait and lift!.. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ the fish shoots off into the distance, screaming off line of the low set drag, i turn him, he comes shooting back at me and jutts off to the left and is messing around in the oysters, im thinking, ?????? this aint no blackfish, if it is its one thats insane. so after more fun and turning him this way and that i see the tell tale silver flash of a bream, and she's in the net. i was gobbed smacked, genuinely caught in the mouth, i couldn't believe it, she went 35cm to boot. But in speaking to one of the local pros, turns out this isnt too random at all! apparently in april-may time big bream tend to feed on weed and cabbage, just prior to them going off to spawn! no one really knows why, but an interesting fact! have a good weekend raiders! tight lines. 12. http://www.ausfish.com.au/beach.html a handy link.
  13. Id say 2 hours either side of the high tide, with the swell anywhere below 5ft, work best for me. but the best thing you can do to improve your catch is to fish in the right place! being able to read the beach for its gutters holes and rips, is the best piece of tackle you can have when surf fishing. 14. top fish dude. would like to beat that from shore
  15. Following the report of the big Tailor, just wanted to see what other monster tailor have been landed in the past? They are such an awesome fish, my personal best from last year was one of 61cm TL so about 59cm FL which is a smidgen under 3kg according to the fisheries website. so yeah WHATS YOUR BIGGEST TAILOR?? Report here. http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=57630&st=0&p=412721&hl=+tailor%20+bondi&fromsearch=1entry412721

  19. just wandering what the norm is for the depth at which live baits are suspended under a float when fishing, for say, kings. an do you include a sinker? or allow the live bait to free swim? Thanks Gilbey
  20. Hey Royce, Yeah Good friday was pretty big, i didnt even bother venturing down, just waited patiently until i was in jervis bay i can see how it can be really dodgey at mkenzines, and i have turned away on many occasions and scooted round to the safety of the boot.
  21. yes mate, i do know the area i fished, i have fished the spot many times and is one of my local haunts, and was prepared for the conditions, even if they were not as predicted, the ledge i fish at mkenzies absorbs many of the incoming predominate swells and so makes the area fishable, as long as your on the ball. and as the tide drops the undercut ledge absorbs more of the swell from my experience, thus making it safer. i wasnt fishing by myself and never stated that i was, and i always spend a good 15 mins up high on the cliff watching for the big sets that come through and see what effect their having on the ledge, granted the set that i mentioned in my post was much bigger than the norm for that day, but as i mentioned it was a freak, and saw nothing simiar for the 5 hours i stayed there, and was the biggest i have seen for those conditions, the point i was trying to make, is even if the conditions look good, you should always be weary for the unexpected. i respect your concern, but i am not a risk taker, and was in fact the first to leave the ledge upon seeing the wave, some of the "old timers" who were there, stayed till it came close then rushed back narrowly missing it. 22. hey Raiders, So headed down to tama after work on friday thinking the swell would have dropped, but it hadnt, but i decided to brave it any way as the tide was falling and it looked predictable... so within an a half hour i had 3 blackfish in the bag, biggest going 40cm, nice fish. few mintures down the line i see a nice swell brewing on the horizon, so i shut up shop and retreat. this thing was growing, and growing and kept growing until out of no where it ploughed over the ledge 6, 7ft above where i was standing headed straight towards me, i scarpered up the cliff face, grabbed what gear i could and let it do its thing, it knocked me rod over which got sucked away but was recoverable, but cant say i was so lucky on the fish! the swell snapped the rope from its anchor point taking the fish with it, luckily i had already killed and bled the fish and just put them in the net to keep em fresh, i would have felt seriously bad if they had got sucked away alive! i didnt even realise they were gone into the wave subsided and they were no where to be seen. gutted. so i regained my composure, re-analysed the swell and sat back and waited for it to die down, and within 20 minutes the ledge was fishable once again. so got back out there and was straight in again, hurrah! i thought i was in for a duck after that episode, but no, got a few more in the bag, well the esky as the bag had gone , then they went off the bite, so for the last hour before dark i stuck some pillies out on the bottom only to produce i nice brace of salmon biggest going 67cm and 3kg on the nose!, seriously fat fish, my pb in weight but not length. so in the end, i was happy, but i learnt a valuable lesson that the swell may look predictable, but it only takes that one freak wave and its game over. so dont take no risks! no fishing trip is worth your life! Gilbey
