  1. Ah thanks Finbar! And by the river side, do you mean the stretch of water that goes under the bridge? Or the one facing the beach? Thanks for the tips! Oh and is it easy to get snagged with SPs?
  2. HI raiders, Wondering if anybody has had any success using SPs at Kyeemagh Breakwall? And if anybody has any general tips fishing there? (wind direction, tide?) Thanks!
  3. Yeah when I read about graphite rods, there was so much "becareful of this and that and don't do this or that", it made it seem like graphite rods were like twigs haha. Seemed like the disadvantages outweighed the advantages. But my tsunami bullseye rod has been quite good, however everytime accidentally hit it against something I get paranoid, as I'm still a student and don't have the funds to replace it.
  4. Right I see, that makes sense. Thanks for the advice guys, I'll definitely take it on. Graphite rods have opened up a whole new world of fishing, good and bad. Don't know how I will feel if I spend some big bucks on a rod. Might have to hire guards to watch it, bit worrisome haha.
  5. Does it take a soft bump to weaken a rod or is it something more substantial?
  6. Hi fellow raiders, I was wandering if it is possible to check for weaknesses in graphite rods? And how easily one can get damaged? Thanks
  7. Hi Rich, yes that does make more sense now, I think it is just now at this point in time I am not as experienced so it might take me some time to develop any "outfits". As you said before, all I have now is a "light soft palstic" outfit for most situations haha. But yes that does clear things up, thank you for taking the time to explain it mate! Hope you have a great weekend!
  8. Hi guys, as I start to get the hang of fishing, I notice that my collection of gear gets larger. And I read about anglers who say they have specific reels and rods for specific fish and so forth. But I don't understand how they assign a reel or rod to a specific place/fish. SO if an angler wanted to target say Snapper, he would take this outfit, or flathead and take another etc. Could anybody explain how anglers assign different gear for specific fish? At the moment when I go fishing I take a Tsunami Bullseye rod and a Sienna 2500FD reel for SP, and this is what I pretty much use to catch fish with. I'm not sure if this helps but I am landbased, so maybe that's why I dont have specific gear for specific fish. Thanks!
  9. Thanks nexus, it certainly is quite an addiction now. You just can't beat the thrill of SPs, I'm also afraid I am on the same boat as you with my fibreglass rods, all gathering dust now. I might invest in an IM7 or IM8 rod then next. I wish I had the luxury of stocking up on rods, but I'm still in university and working part time:(. But I do try to pick up a bargain when I can, christmas shohuld be rolling around soon! Sales!
  10. In that case, I need a crib for my baby. I was looking into making a PVC tube for the rod, but I'm wandering if foam inserts are necessary? Would the rod rattle around a bit too much in the tube to cause damage?
  11. Thanks guys! And CG I will definitely take in your wise advice!
  12. Hey guys, Just bought my first graphite rod, tsunami bullseye 6'4", and decided to christen the new rod at carss park with some SPs. Headed out around 3 and not much happening besides the odd bite, which felt great on the graphite! Plenty of small tailor jumping around, and as the sun began to set I gave it one last cast and low and behold I hooked onto a flathead. It gave me a nice workout and the rod too, it turned out to be a new PB of 50cm. Was a great day and weather too. On another note, do you guys have any tips on how to care for a graphite rod? And what is this high sticking, some say no higher then 45 degrees, others say 90. Which angle is safer for a graphite rod?
  13. Thanks for all the tips guys, I will definitely give that a try.
  14. Yes that's exactly what I'm after, I'm surprised too.
  15. Hi guys, I recently noticed on one of my rods whenever I would cast or make hops on lures, the rod would make a sort of tapping sound at the joint where it joins (a 2 piece rod). On a closer inspection I noticed that the top half of the rod is the hollow part and the bottom half is inserted into the top half, and it seems like the two parts don't join perfectly so whenever any eratic movements would occur, it would cause the tapping sound. So I'm wandering if I could DIY and maybe make the bottom half a little thicker so it would sit perfectly when joined? I hope this makes sense, if not I can try to explain further. Thanks!
  16. Hi raiders, I recently bought a JW Zenith IV combo hoping to use the rod for SPs, it has a weight rating of 2-4kg but I was wandering if I could use it for SPs because of its lightness? I didn't want to purchase a graphite rod as I am just starting SPs and didn't want to ruin a graphite rod by banging it around. I was hoping to get some fun out it but was wandering would it break before I get any fun out of it? (say I got hit by a 2kg fish?) Thanks! I hope my question makes sense!
  17. I use mainly 3 inch minnows, yeah I went quite a bit today, I think the leatherjackets and tailor were in abundance today .
  18. How do you get hooked onto tailor and bream on SPs? Whenever I use SPs (Berkley Gulp), they take bites out of the plastic, all around the hook.
  19. That's alright Peter, you have been a great help.
  20. Hey Peter, Thanks for the quick reply, I've been trying to target fish like salmon, trevally or kingfish on SPs, but I'm not sure where to begin. I live close to port hacking, would you know any areas or tips regarding catching those species with SPs? Thanks mate!
  21. Hi guys, I have a question about fishing landbased, hoping you guys could help me out. I normally fish Carss Park and I don't hear much or see many people catching fish like salmon, trevelly or jewfish (bigger sized fishes). But when I go to Gymea Bay Baths, I hear stories about salmons and kingfish being caught and not caught hehe. So I am wandering if catching big fish is about location or is it just luck to have to bang into one? Hypothetically speaking, say both fishermen have same baits and same conditions etc, is it about location or a whole heap of luck? And also, what fish will take the tail of a SP first? I had bad luck today with my SP's tails missing Thanks guys!
  22. I am on land, thanks guys!
  23. Hi guys, took advantage of a great day and headed out to Carss Park for another SP run. Was first to arrive, which was great, and a couple of casts in and had a big fish hooked on my squidgy, after a few runs, it busted off. Don't even know what it was (saw some silver though). After about an hour got hooked onto a flathead, 41cm, which was a new record for me as this is my 5th attempt at SPs. During the late arvo, more people came to fish and this bloke caught a ~2kg bream on bread and other guys caught lots of mullet and garfish. I caught another flathead, probably just under 20cm. Switched to finger/stick bait and didn't catch anything but got felt some decent hits. Is it harder to get hooked onto fingerbaits then squidgies? Or is it cause my fingerbait is 9cm and my squidgy is around 3.5cm? It just seems that the pelagic fish like the fingerbaits more? Just wandering. Anyway it was a great day and had loads of fun and practice with SPs.
  24. Thanks guys! I fished just next to the net on that little protruding land, it can get busy sometimes, but luckily not today.
  25. Thanks mate! Yeah the fish were here and there. Lucky to have caught those ones. Will post a picture as soon as I can.
