  1. Is all the commotion about the durability of the Ci4s hearsay?
  2. I've got a pflueger trion and a catana at the moment, both 2-4kg.
  3. Hi raiders, It is that time of the year again, time to upgrade the reel. I've narrowed down my search to three reels, for the esturary. I just wanted to know your experience with the reels, if you have owned or used them. Shimano Stradic Ci4 1000 Shimano Rarenium Ci4 1000 Shimano Sustain 1000 FG The reason I prefer the Shimano brand is that the service centre is close by and the turnover is great. I will be after esturary species ranging from bream to the odd (lost/lucky) trevally. My budget is between 200-300, strictly. Thanks guys!

    Fish ID please.

Are they a saltwater or freshwater species?
  5. Hi guys, I'm pretty new to fishing so I don't know all the species as of yet, but I am learning. I was wandering if I could get some help on this one, it was caught on a surface walker at night. Sorry about the quality, taken on the phone. Thanks
  6. Hi raisers, just wandering how durable a hollow glass rod is? Ive been looking at an alvey rod, but they are all made from hollow glass. Thanks
  7. Thanks for that luderick angler, I'm looking at possible getting a blackfish specific alvey reel. On BCF they have two models, a 455BXL which I saw at a store today and a 475B. What is the difference? And I have a 7 foot Berkley Attack graphite rod at home, the mount is very close to the butt of the rod and the first guide is very far up. Keeping in mind I won't be doing a lot of casting, mostly just dropping the line or small casts off a wharf.
  8. Just a bit of change, and it is mostly for blackfish and bream, but mostly just for a change from spin reels.
  9. I'm thinking of getting a combo that includes the 500B alvey reel with a 7 foot rod, as I won't be casting much. But is it still true with Alveys, "you pay for what you get"? It is $69, however if I buy a rod and reel seperately, it will cost about $150+.
  10. Also, what would be the difference between the 45BC and say a luderick alvey reel like a 455B?
  11. Okay I'll check the 45bc out, sorry but there is one more thing. If I'm going to get the reel individually, I'll need a rod. I won't need a long one as I won't be casting that often, just near the wharf. I've got a few spin rods at home around 7 foot and graphite. Will they work?
  12. Is that harder for a beginner? I saw a 455XL reel only for $69 at a tackle shop nearby.
  13. Ah okay, that's good then. I was looking at a rod and reel combo at BCF, ts the 500B alvey reel with a rod. For $69
  14. I think I'll mostly be using it for blackfish and other species off wharves. So not a lot of casting involved, just dropping the line down or small casts. So there is no need to pump and wind whilst fighting a fish? I can fight a fish by just winding? What if they take a run? Thanks so much for your help!
  15. Hi raiders, I'm thinking about getting an alvey reel and I just wanted to know how it works. I have a couple of questions; 1. Is there a drag on an alvey reel and is it the same as a spinning reel? The way it works, turn of a dial? 2. How would I reel in a fish with an alvey reel? Pump and wind? 3. I read somewhere about having to keep the index finger on the line, what is that about? 4. Are there any other basic info I should I know about how to use an alvey reel? Thanks raiders!
  16. Hi raiders, Planned to fishing the sunrise this morning, got home from work around 11. I couldn't be bothered sleeping just a couple of hours and waking up even more tired. So I stayed up till around 5 and left the house. Went to kogarah bay to begin my session, plenty of mullet jumping around the surface. When I got there it was pretty dark, I tried a popper without confidence and without any luck. Tried a gulp 2" prawn also without much takers. As the sun began to rise I switched to a berkley surface lure as I noticed plenty of smaller fishing trying to take the lure, some fishing were only as big as the lure itself haha. After a couple of casts a tailor the size on my hand grabbed the lure, not much of a fight, but it inspired confidence, which was much needed. Not long after an even smaller tailor took the walker right at my feet. Not my target species and there weren't any other takers, so I started moving along the bank and started casting at the sand flats. Not long in the sand flats and there was a nice splash at the lure and up came a nice bream , think it was just legal (first bream on a surface lure). After casting for awhile and many small followers and some swirls, kept me excited. Noticed a big swirl after I paused the lure, the fish came back and swiped the lure and off we went into a fight. I managed to get the fish close and it was a very nice bream, but everytime I got him close, he would dart away. I managed to get him in and measured a nice 30cm bream. After awhile there were no more swirls so I decided to keep moving. Found another spot of sand flats and second cast, there a few swirls, I must of cast right on top of them. After another fight, a bream came up. Smallest of the day, but good fish nonetheless. Finished the day around 10, it got hot and quiet fast as the tide went out. All fish were released.
  17. Hey raiders, I'm going fishing tomorrow for bream, early morning, around this time of year should I start my lures from te top of the water and work my way down or is there really no difference? Is there a method you guys use?
  18. Do people use poppers during the colder months? What is the theory for poppers during different seasons?
  19. Thanks for the replies guys, is there a way to tell if the bream or any fish are there without having to go to bait? As a landbased angler sometimes the water gets choppy and hard to see with pilarized sunnies from the shore. I'm more worried about the fishing not being there and me wasting my time in that spot.
  20. Thanks for your replies guys! I've been fishing 5lb braid and 4lb leader on a 1000 reel and 2-4kg rod. I've been using various soft plastics, some with scent and some without. It's been hard to get them to strike, and the only structure I fish around are rocks covered in oysters, weeds and just sand flats. I can't really cast at pontoons or piers because they are either too far away or I'm on the only one within the area haha, and I can't really cast at myself. I think I just have to keep persisting. I did have a go last week with soft plastics and didn't get any hits, but once I switched to bread they fish were going at it, so I knew they were there
  21. Hi guys, I've been trying to crack my bream soft plastic doughnut for the past half a year. And after much research, I find that I still don't have enough information on the species. As a landbased angler, I thought maybe I could start a thread to help those that are in the same boat as me, trying to catch bream on soft plastic or any other lures. I do have one question to start off, when I target bream, is it a matter of just casting into the right spot at the right time or do I have to keep persisting in the one spot and tempt one? Thanks raiders!
  22. I've actually been using lures for less then half a year and let me tell you, it does get easier after the first one. You start to notice a pattern for your technique in your area. I went this morning on land at sunrise and tried all different lures along the bank, I only had a couple of times where a fish would strike my hardbody but not hookup. I decided to move to the opposite side of the bank to try my luck after a couple of hours of nothing. First cast on the opposite side I caught the tiniest flathead, after that zilch. I decided to use bread after awhile and I caught lots of undersized bream. Weird how fishing works that way, some days fish are not in to lures and other days they are.
  23. Sorry I forgot to mention, I'm targeting bream. Do fish hit lures swimming above them but still in the water?
  24. Hi raiders, I have been fishing for only almost a year and only on land, so I have some restrictions when it comes to fishing. The waters I usually fish rarely exceeds 2m (with a rocky bottom and structure), and lately I've been getting into lure fishing with some success. Recently I have been losing a fair amount of hardbodied lures, and I noticed that those lures are at diving depths of 1-2m. Although I can't see the action of the lure, I'm guessing it is fairly close to the bottom, hence losing lures frequently. So my question is, if I start using hardbodied lures of 0-1m (not including surface lures) will I still catch fish at 2m and among structure? I'm guessing at 0-1 the lure will just be above the structure? Hope this makes sense. Thanks Clement
  25. I am currently using a 2-4kg catana on the stradic fj 1000. Would it be worth it to upgrade to a 1-3kg trion rod?
