  1. Be careful if you go the glass route as its significantly heavier than perspex.

    Having said that, I work in glass and if your tank can handle the extra weight and rigidity of glass I would use 6, 38 laminated as a window with a rubber gasket.

    If anyone needs advice with glass let me know.

  2. I have some of the shirts mentioned sitting in the cupboard that i dont use that were given to me as a gift that were only used a couple of times.

    I always use My old hi-vis orange or yellow work shirts.

    I stand out like a beacon in the boat.

    Quick drying, non iron,uv protection,no buttons, safety and $0 all rolled into one.

    I go fishing, im not intrested in the least looking like a moving billboard and paying through the nose for the privilege.

    Each to their own I guess.

    I would check out the department stores and you'll have change left over for tackle before the fishing/camping stores.

    I forgot to mention that he's prepared to pay and has looked online from the cheapies to the good ones but is more concerned about the size/stability and what you all recommend for fitting this thing out with and what can wait.

    I've never been on one so I can't advise him too much other than state the obvious like no regos, fuel, stealth etc compared to a boat.

  4. Hi guys,

    Im after some info on how to get into kayaking for a workmate.

    Talking to him I was told he'd like to give it a go fishing in the estuaries for the usual species.

    If it, s much help he weighs 120kg and is 6ft4. (Don't think someone's stealing his yak.lol.)

    Basically what type/brand/size.

    Must haves.

    And anything else that you guys can think of.

    Any suggestions are much appreciated.

  5. Some have an hour meter, some don't.

    Depends on the motor and servicing,boat engines don, t like to sit for long periods with little to no maintenance, worst thing for them.

    If it's been well looked after and maintained accordingly, in short 400 hrs isn't too many hours for an engine.

  6. There's only one way to find out.

    Fish with 2 outfits over a period of time with exactly the same terminal tackle and baits/lures and decide from there which is better.

    I did for a year and was convinced flouro didn't give me anymore fish or donuts than using mono for the bread and butter fish in the estuaries.

    I use mono straight through now.

    Before flouro everyone used mono and plenty of fish were caught.

  7. As bruce mentioned fish as light as you dare with as little lead as you can get away with.

    A moving bait will catch many more fish than one anchored to the bottom with a lump of lead.

    Thats why drifting works so well and you also cover more ground.

    I use a size 6 hook for whiting with no to very little lead and a long trace.

    Try fishing the edges of weedbeds, sand patches, dropoffs etc in otherwords think like a fish and find some form off structure and work the tides.

    Early morning and late afternoon are generally the best times to fish when there is very little boat traffic churning the water up.

  8. I made these all a while ago with materials i already had other than the baitboard to keep my small boat uncluttered and have easy access to what I need.

    The bait board pivots on the rail.

  9. Just curious which method you use.

    Do you use mono backing straight on your reel then attach braid until full?

    Do you spool with braid straight through?

    Do you put something on reel spool first to guard against slippage then either of above or something else?

  11. Hi guys,

    A work mate and I had a chat last night about snelled knots.

    He was saying that when he tied his sliding snell it would slide down his main line causing his bait to bunch up.

    I told him to try adding more wraps keeping them nice and tight and if he wanted to use the fixed snell to set his hook distance an inch or so longer than his longest bait.

    Thoughts on hook position for different baits would help also.

    I normally pin squid just near the top of the head and one through the main body.

    Fish baits through either the nose/eyes and one just behind the dorsal.

    The first knot I learnt was the snell as a kid fishing for estuary species,I think it, s a very easy knot to tie and has never let me down when tied properly.

    Does anyone still use the snell when fishing a single hook?

    Every one seems to use the uni or locked half blood knot.

    Who favours the sliding snell or the fixed and why?

    Unfortunately there's still the mentality in a lot of workplaces that people for one reason or another don,t care or are afraid to speak up and go about life worrying about themselves.

    I've told our ceo he needs to piss off outside the factory(exact words) and put on ppe before he came back inside explaining why.

    And guess what thats exactly what he did before returning an hour later.

    He then proceeded to ask me if I knew who he was.

    I told him I know who you are and to be honest I dont care if it's you or the cleaner we're all the same here and need to look out for one another and follow the company policy.

    To be honest I thought i'd be looking for another job, but to my amazement he went back to his office returning with his personal checkbook handing me a cheque for a grand recomending i take the family out to dinner somewhere nice on him.

    Now this bloke is earning nearly 2 million bucks a year and if I can tell him and everyone else I see doing the wrong thing anyone can.

    All of us need to speak up, it just might save someone one day.

  14. Congratulations on the new boat mate!I have one myself.

    As the others said only give engine a spray with inox/lanox and try to avoid wd 40 where possible as it washes away grease from your linkages etc and can eventually eat away rubber/plastics.

    Unfortunately my guess is you've already fried the impellor as it doesn't take long due to no lubrication from water.

    I'd be getting someone like Huey one of the site sponsors to change it out for you ,or it's a easy job to do yourself if you have the knowledge/tools.

    He may be able to point you in the right direction chasing a service manual or ring Yamaha direct.

    You may as well try sticking a wire in the tubing now and try blowing some compressed air through to see if there's a blockage but I doubt it.

    I would still change the impellor for peace of mind even if it works.

    In Regards to backing the trailer try holding your hands at 6 o, clock on the steering wheel and whichever way you want to turn the trailer turn in that direction.I.e left ti turn trailer left and right to turn trailer right.

    Otherwise keep hands on top of steering and use side mirrors, when you see to much trailer in right mirror turn right.

    Too much trailer in left mirror turn left.

    Use small steering inputs at a time and go slow and steady.

    It, s also easier to back to the right if possible when turning as you have a good view of the boat and don't lose it in your left mirror when backing left.

  16. Hi guys, I was just given a little gear from my Father inlaw which belonged to a friend of his which has since passed.

    Alot of it was rusted badly but scored some good hooks/leads and some flies.

    He had traces made up on those sticks with heavy mono and large hooks.

    The news paper is dated 17 dec 1980.

    There is a mitchel 307 reel there which seems like its all there and was wondering if it was ok back in the day and around what vintage.

    Looks like a surf reel to me.

    Side question.... Do those glass sheets weight over 3 tonne each? Wow.

    One sheet weighs 450kg,7 fell at once,30 on 1 block,each 6mm thick.
