  1. good catch austral. Did you get them in Paddys Channel??? Some good fish are appearing up your way now the jacaranda trees are in flower, jewies should be around at various spots around Brissy Waters and further out near the RIP Bridge. Keep em coming mate
  2. Thats just awesome lads, fantastic session. I am still skeptical about eatin a SN tho Might be tempted one day if you tell me how to skin and cook it right??? You guys know that area very well and you been getting into some great fish, have the Jewies arrived in Brissy Waters yet??? Do you happen to know??? Congrats again
  3. I'd want to go back to Harrington Beach and fish for Jewies, my Grandfather got a 60lb model that ran him from the breakwall @ harrington almost to crowdy headland on 12lb mono with his bro in law chasing him in a 4wd egginh him on, now thats the legendary stuff I dream of! Fish took a live beach worm on a 1/0 suicide hook Other spots would include Killcare Beach, Shoalhaven heads offshore with my mate Roy and in the Bay of Plenty in NZ for monster Red's and Kingies All salt for me nothing better than sittin on the beach with a coupla rod holders and an esky full of beers.
  4. Hi Murph, I dont have a boat but I too am experienced Beach Fisho I mainly fish Broken Bay and Pearl, Little Box and Killcare Beaches. if you are interested in catching up for a beach fish one day please PM me, I head up to Gosford every few weeks, my Mum lives in Narara. I love chasing Jewies and Flatties from the sand and big Taylor and Sambo's. Cheers mate
  5. Well done Pete, its gret to hear Wisemans and Spencer areas are starting to "hot-up". I will be there next week or the week after fishin for Jewies in a mates boat, we might see you out there. Great effort budd
  6. What a STONKER! Well done on the catch lads, truly awesome!
  7. I caught a 92cm Jewie from Lane Cover river and it went just on 10kg, so one that size would be just about 10kg, but no more than 11kg for sure He looks every bit of 10 or 11kg to me, if he was fatter I could ay yer 13kg One of my freinds got a 106cm Jew from Parra River last month and it was 13kg even, and it was very fat. Still a great catch regardless of weight, again well done matey Just some stats
  8. Nice catch BreamChaser, Spencer will be firing soon and the report you posted has given me hope if nailing a Jewie from there in the next couple of weeks. Were you fishing with live bait or slabs?
  9. Once of my mates Eddie nailed on from Parra River that went 48cm and was over 2kg Only a few weeks ago he got it, and since that time he regularly pulls out Bream over 40cm on whole pillies with size 4 baitholder hooks. Strange rig he uses but it works on Bream, Flatties and Jew in the rivers and around the wharves.
  10. Well done again Ray. Great catch the Sambo's- me and a mate got into them in Botany bay, the biggest went a tad over 70cm and put up the best fight I ever had on 10lb The Kingies with the Sambo's were hoodlums, we hooked a few and line was screaming off the reels with long battles on light gear, but alas none were landed, lol
  11. Dave, as Nathan said I dont think you are doing anything wrong. I have exactly the same problem with my mate Eddie, we fish together at least 1 day every week and he walks away with the fish and I seem to get the yakkas, lol next time look for the working birds and there are the Sambo's, mixed in with Kingies and taylor I suggest chucking out a few 1/2 X 1/4 metal slices or troll some whole garfish with 4 X 3/0 ganged hooks in them, they are great for BIG Taylor and Kingies on the troll. Or alternatively throw out shold pillies and berley up a bit to keep the bait fish and the scoll near you, often they will go down (especially if someone run straight through the middle of the school) and they will resurface later, but he have to watch the birds as they circle the school waiting for the big bust up. Better luck next time mate, I hope it all gets better now the rivers are heating up temperature wise the Flatties will be back on the flats with Whiting and the Jew will be moving into the main harbour. you could always try over near Box Head after rain the Jewies sit there on the edge of the reef waiting for schools of yakkas and slimeys.
  12. Yer, the Sambo's certainly put on the show for us all We were pretty lucky for a great skipper who stopped for us to have soem fun for an hour or so, he could have said "NO" on the way back and they way he manouvered the boat but not within the school was to be commended. After I got home the kids were already in bed, so I sat down and relaxed with a few soothing ale's and pondered the next outing- then just as I was getting ready to go for a snooze my mate Eddie called me and asked if I wanted to chase Jewies from our favourite wharf- I was exhausted after a long day on the water and almost fully baked and passed out on the lounge. Am definitely hitting up Parra River this week chase Jewies and Flatties from my other local spot Gee its going to be a cracking summer of fishing Nath, next time I head out I'll give you a call Chat soon
  13. Well done Nath, FYI- The Flounder will be at peak size in mid-summer (early January) when they are full or roe and are in spawning mode. At this time you can get them up to about 35 or 38cm. The Flattie looks pretty decent too
  14. Very nice Jewie diesel Well done mate
  15. Yes mate, I was there... Much better in the arvo, not a single boat ploughed through the school and there was only 10-15 boats chasing them, a few guys were using flies but I was using 1/2 X 1/4 metals slices I managed 2 the biggest just a tad over 70cm, the other one just about 66cm Both fish were at LEAST 3kg each, the bigger one going close on 4kg Simon who was out with me nailed a nice taylor on a minnow while trolling around the main school, then got a nice Sambo same as my bigger one. I hooked heaps of them on the troll, but many dislodged the hooks just on the surface. Did you notice the Kingies in the water boiling with the Sambo's?? there was what appeared to be some hoodlums among them, we could see them in the water their yellow tails all bright as hell couldnt miss then. I hooked into one (I think...) after a 10-15minute fight and nearly 2/3 of my 10lb gone it bricked me and dislodged the hooks Simon hooked into one aswell and got the same treatment on 20lb I wrote up a report with some piccies. At least you got a couple, we dipped out on the reefs for Red's and the Sambo's made up for a very slow day
  16. My mate ash asked me to join him and his mate Simon from ACT today on Botany bay Arrived at the ramp about 8:30am and lauched aithout any hassles On the way out there was a scholl of Sambo's going berzerk just inside the heads, after getting closer and about 30boats lining up for action we decided to head out of the heads and drift for a few Red's. After baiting up we only get a few picks here and there Back inside we went to the sandbar and we drifted for a while, closer to the drums we got into a couple of pinkies and they were released, One was caught on a bait jig with small strips of pillie attached. No more action, we headed back out the heads and tried one more drift, all for nothing. Across to Trevally Alley we burleyed and waited, and waited, and waited. not even a single bight after 40minutes- tried pillie, fresh yakka, prawn and mullet and still nothing! So back out to the reef and the water had settled down a bit. We lost a few good strikes bottom bashing We decided to come in a bit closer to the rocks and try in there for more Red's but they werent there. Nearly 3pm so headed for home only getting undersized Squire and few pinkies and a red rock cod- all returned to the water. On the way back another Sambo school was busting up inside the heads- so we diced to have some fun with 1/2 X 1/4ers on 10lb First cast- I get on but I get SMASHED! I see there are kingies among the Sambo school- their bright yellow tails were easy to see in the water. After a 10-15 minute tussle with what I suspect was a kingie I got bricked, lol (thankfully I still get my lure back) I cast in again and got another good strike, but this time the hooks held. Some specticular aerial displpay with this finsh making 4 jumps before going deep, then running anti-clockwise around the boat before going deep again. Finally I got him at the back and led him to the waiting net - WOO HOO all round and dehook the trebles and into the live bait tank he goes. Had a few more casts for a few hookups and lots of hook spitting. Ash says why not troll back to the school as there were 3 schools there in the arvo at different places at different times. We trolled and just as we pull up I start to wind, then I am on again! This fish gave a great account of itself, and it literally buried me in the sand trying to dislodge the trebles, a few jumps and another scorching run I get him beside the boat. We continued to troll once the school moved and I lost another 2 or 3 when they spat the hooks, one of them I got to within 2m of the boat before he spat the hooks and came flying back against the boat with a loud THUD! We keep chasing the school and Simon nails a nice Taylor on a minnow on the troll, followed by a beaut Sambo. We lost a few more after that and cam home satisfied, the Sambo's sure made up for the lack of any other fishy action everywhere else. Great day out but am paying for not using sunburn cream now- OUCH!
  17. Last night went to my mate from works place to show him a few rigs and stuff, after a few short lessons we ventured into his back garden and chucked out a few whole pillies. Wind was pretty gusty but thankfully were out of the brunt of it. About 15minutes after I cast out I saw a few good taps on the line. I kept watching slowly sipping my beer, then it happened. Rod buckles and 10lb mono is peeling off the reel zzzZZZZzzzzZZZZZzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I was quite taken aback as I certainly wasnt expecting a run from any fish in his own back yard. Set the hook, then one more run and I got DUSTED! Calling for a small Jew but cannot be sure, sure fought like one and it had some weight to it, I reckon he must have been in the 3-5kg range from the weight. A few minutes after that my mates rod buckles over but its over before the hook was set, took the bait and spat the hook in one large bight! Re-rigged and chucked out another one. Few bites later the pillie came back half chewed in the mid section- AH! this time a Bream! This keps going until the last bait and right on top of tide action went completely dead. Threw in the towell and decided to head upstairs and watch some Jewie DVD's instead Will def be going back to his place try my luck again in the next few days, looks like there is good structure there. Sure was a good night out with a good mate, we got a good run and a dusting, another smashing bite and a few timid bites from the local Bream community. Pretty happy considering I was only showing him a few rigs and how to tie knots and leader strengths.
  18. Well done Lads Fine fish you got there, same about the Groper though. All in a fun day though so you have to be stoked with that.
  19. Tom, If you live in Waverton you should try places like Woolstonecraft LB ther are a few points on Google Maps you can get direct access to, and there are other places like Greenwich, Linley Point, Woolwich all have good LB options where you are luikely to come across the odd Kingie, but you will also get bread'n'butter species like Bream, Flatties, Jewies, Whiting Get yourself onto google maps and just follow the river up or downstream, take note of accessible points, beaches and structures like jetties and wharves. Simply pick one and try it the worst you can do is catch nothing but its more about learning experience and finding your very own spot and when it fires for bigger fish. Remember Kingies LOVE structure so pick a place with good deep water and lots of baitfish, this is what they will be feeding on at any time I think you will find the Kinigies wont be upstream far ATM cause the water temps are still a bit chilled further up the Parra and Lane Cove Rivers- persistence pays dividends though to dont give up completely, they will be here soon eneough. Better luck next time mate
  20. Absolutely SFA, thats what my Grandfather used to say "you can't catch fish without your line in the water" And hey, you gotta take the bad days with the good ones, and at least I had a ball on them o'sized yakkas on light string- hours of entertainment Thanks guys, from what I am hearing we arent the only ones who didnt do too well over the weekend. There's always this weekend for another session somewhere and I am looking forwards to it already. Better pull the finger out and start preparing for another long night chasin them darned Jew's - At least I know I am using some of the best bait available onsite so its not something I am durectly doing, its just they dont want the offerings. Might have to try squidding first then chase the Jew for something different???
  21. Went out with Eddie, Nathaniel and my mate Dougie from work last night in Parra River. Arrived 9:30pm and started catching yakkas for livies. Surrounds were boiling with tiny baitfish (think they were poddies or hardyheads) getting smashed by Taylor whih was a great sign of bigger fishies in the vicinity. Nathaniel arrived 10pm just after I threw out first livie, and Eddie arrived 5 or 10 after that. Had a few yakkas in the bucket so DB send one out and I continue to catch them. Started berleying with bread, chook pellets and old pillie cubes and generated quite a bit of interest from the yakkas and choppers but not much else After Ed rigged up he sent 2 more livies out on Jew rods and we played the waiting game- rods were dancing for quite a while (again good sign- yakkas getting spooked means predators around). Still getting loads of yakkas and we had 8 or 9 in the bucket and I managed to get a double header at one stage- which was fantastic sport on 4lb string with a sibiki rig Tried Mullet gut, strips, whole pillies and cubed pillies and yakka at varying times Not much action and a few of the livies died in the water so we had to keep changing them to keep any interest. The ones that perished were slabbed up and Ed put them on a 2/0 see that worked- alas nothing except for a few bites here and there. We waited for the change of tide @ 3am and I called it a night after no Jew, no runs not even any Bream or Flatties n the chew which I was very surprized about. Left and got home with 12 yakkas to freeze for next time so at least dont have to buy bait for a while and they make great slab baits. Left Ed on the deck with a very lively livie out in front for that elusive Jewie or big Flattie All in all another great night and loads of fun on yakkas and choppers on light gear, perfect conditions, great to see loads of bait fish around- and most importantly great mates and a few tinnies No piccies guys, sorry I couldnt capture the boils on my phone but they would have made great vid's if I had the right light and camera, lol
  22. GEE-SUS! Great catch of Jewies, and bonus Flatties and Bream too I hope my night is similar tonight - heading out in Parra River chasing jew from one of my local wharves- got some nice fresh whole mullet, fresh hawkesbury prawns and kilo of pillies should do the trick! BRING ON THE JEWIES I RECKON!
  23. Thats a STONKER Whiting Robert. Well done and at least you got out, unfortunately I was sitting at home nursing the worst hangover I ever had but I should be out and about tomorrow night chase a Jewie from the local wharf.
  24. I agree with FD and Beginner, you should get a longer rod for fishing the rocks (and beaches too) A good spinning reel with 15 or 20lb will be ample, match it to a 5-8kg rated rod in the 10-12' range. ig you are chasing bigger fish such as Mulloway (Jewies), Kingies and Tuna from the rocks you best got for a bigger reel Like a 6500 or 7000 and match it to a 10-15kg rod- load it up with 30lb and use a good mono leader if you plan to use braid- but personally mono is tjhe way to go both from the stones and the beaches. I find braid impractical for beach and rock fishing and the stretch of mono is more suited to what you are trying to achieve, I can recommend Wilson Live Fibre Rods and Alvey Sidecast reels or Okuma/Diawa/Shimano in spinning reels. Baitrunners are a good option and are very versatile. Alveys are simple to use and that last a lifetime with minimal servicing- just wash it down after each use for 5mins under a tap- too easy! Whole pillies of the rocks on Ganged hooks or large slabs of Mullet/yakka/tuna/bonito are the best baits, along with red rock crabs and cunjevoi- you can collect these baits at most good platforms. As for questions about Avoca, it is one of the most dangerous platforms in NSW and you should fish with experienced anglpers from ANY platform and make sure you sit and watch the sea for at LEAST 30minutes before attempting to chuck in a line. Safety is paramount for anyone fishing the rocks.
  25. F***ers! that sux mate, I hope you get the pride and joy back*-*
