  1. Hi Guys, I was wondering if silicone is good to use to adhere down boat carpet. I was in a large named hardware yesterday and they had boat carpet at a good price. However, the guy there (said he was a fisho) reckons that he uses silicone instead of glue as it it is easier to remove later for maintenance etc. Have you guys heard of this, would you use silicone instead of the carper glues?
  2. What's on your mind?

  3. I have left mine at Akuna Bay over the years and never had a problem. Otherwise at Brewora there is paid secure parking.
  4. Hi Guys/Gals, I am taking the family up to the Whitsundays next week and bareboating a cruiser. Just wondering if anyone can tell me some goods spots, bait to use (can I catch my own without a cast net), what bait should I buy before heading out and any particular lures I should try. If I am trolling X Raps and skirts do I need wire because of Spanards? Thanks.
  5. I purchased an old Savage with a 140 Mariner and have just been told that the wiring in the motor is corroded and will cost up to $2K to fix properly and no guarantees about other things. Therefore, I need to buy a second hand outboard, looking at a 115hp. Hopefully can trade the old one in. Can anyone tell me were is the best place is to get a new second hand motor. I am on hte South Coast but will come up to Sydney if necessary. Thanks.
  6. The best way to clean off the silver is to use a nylon scourer, some guys use hession bags. Just rub off the silver with the scourer. I use the salt water to wash the scourer. I think the best way to release them is when standing up to grab them by the back of the neck pull out the hooks with long pliers and drop them back in. I have grabbed a number by the back neck area (first time a bit nervous) and never had a problem they don't seem to go off or jump around in that position. I am not sure what this would do with the school, you wouldn't think it would do much considering the sounder reports showing so many fish at the moment.
  7. If you do a search under Hairtail on this site you should find an article on Hairtail fishing. All info on rigs, places to fish, scrubbing off the silver etc. but I do not think there is info about filleting. I sometimes fillet and then other times cut in to steaks or both (smaller fish or tail end for steaks). I feel that filleting is better though. I have found that the glow sticks work but not convinced on colours. Sometimes the greens outfish the reds and other times the reds outfish. Also if you read the current fishing reports they provide good info. Rigs are usually light wire (18lb) onto ganged hooks, 3/0s I have found better. You can also add a lumo bead. Using a whole pilchard throw out without weight and let it sink. It will find them but if you hit bottom pull up and cast again. You can also use live yakkas under a float at mid water. Sometimes they are aggressive and other times they just suck or hold the bait. When they are being a bit timid you need to let them take the bait and give them some line, this can improve strike rates. Up in QLD they catch them day or night with hardbody lures fishing for jacks, flathead etc. Last year I hooked one on a squid jig but couldn't boat it. I might try some lures this year.
  8. How did you go? I fish JB every year. last year we caught quite a few but small. It looks like everyone is catching them at WB and nothing is happening at JB. Planning to go out to JB in a couple of weeks.

    New battery

I have been told that a Truck or 4WD battery is as good as a marine battery. Is this correct?
  10. I've been envolved with 2 transom fixes. The first one was my boat and we pulled out the old ply and replaced it with marine ply. We put a few coats of resin and mat on the side facing out then fitted the ply. Then we coated the inside side with resin and matting, matting it to the sides and the floor. This gave it more strength and also waterproofed it. This was solid and never gave any problems after. My father in law repaired his transom a couple of years ago by using plate aluminium. He used the plates as it was easier to do and I don't think he pulled out the old ply. He was given a quote of $3K to have it professionally fixed so he did it himself for a few hundred.
  11. Thats a great days fishing. Can you tell me were are the best bait grounds in JB.
  12. Iam looking at purchasing one as well but can anyone tell me the diffrence between the Lowrance Gen 2 HDS 5 and the Elite 5 & Elite 5 DSI. Which is better?
  13. Your having a great run at Windang, didn't know it could produce so well. I suppose you are fishing next to the road bridge. Are you just using the usual plastics? Too bad you didn't hook your big Jew again, I suppose that's what will keeps you fishing there.
  14. Nice fish. I have had that happen to me a few times - nothing while raining and then as soon as the rain stops bites and fish.
  15. I go out every year to chase them and the last couple of times it has been reasonably mild (might have been just good luck) but have been out when it has been -2 or worse. I would add fingerless gloves, scarf and/or balaclava. I also use odd ugh boots. If staying over night I would add rum or scotch. It feels like it may be a cold season this year. Juggs, id be interested in seeing your rocket launcher photos as I have just bought an old boat and I am in the process of doing it up. I want to add a rocket launcher to it, live bait tank and hopefully will have enough left over for a fishfinder/GPS combo. Want to take it up to Cowan this year with my son if it is ready in time.
  16. Ive caught a couple of 60cm Jews around that area on prawns and I know a guy who caught a 4-5kg model on a large Hawesbury prawn but that was up at Spencer.
  17. Well done. Nice morning sess, they give a good fight and my son & wife don't mind eating them. I suppose it comes down to how you prepare them.
  18. Thanks again yockman. I have tested the transom with a friend that knows a bit about ski boats and it is still solid. I bought a Nautiglass with a stuffed transom about 15 years ago. I knew it was stuffed so I paid a good price for it and the cost of fixing it was a lot less than the discount but it took a bit of time and energy to get it ship shape. I have made the decision to buy it and will pick it up tomorrow. I have been looking at all the extra safety gear that I will need to buy (wow) and I still want to get a reasonable sounder/GPS so I hope the engine doesn't need too many dollars thrown at it. I know the guy selling it to me so I can trust what he is saying about the previous servicing etc. When the time comes I think I will put up a post about sounders as the last one is almost a year old now. Thanks again.
  19. Thanks for the reply Yockman. I am sure the hull is fine as Savage, Haine and Carribean all had good names. Just a little worried about the motor not being used for a few years. Prior to that it was regularly serviced.
  20. Well done Pete. Great fish. Wish I could have a day like that again.
  21. You would probably have a better chance in the Hawkesbury at this time of year. I have caught them in front of Lion Island at Easter, last one a couple of years ago. A guy caught one at Brewora last summer before Xmas.
  22. Well done. It is worth getting wet even for one good fish/dinner.
  23. Hi Raiders, Been away from serious fishing for a while but I am looking to get back into it by buying a new/old boat. I was just wondering if anyone could help with info about a boat I am looking at buying. It is a Savage Astra (probably around a 1980 to 1990 model. It is cheap but I will have to spend a few dollars on it as it has been sitting in the guy's driveway for a few years and not used. it was regularly serviced before they stopped using it as the owner felt it was a bit too heavy for him and his wife to launch etc (now that son not living with them). Thanks, Greg
