  1. Mate I would go with a 7foot ugly stick. Or if u wanted to splash out abit more a Wilson live fiber
  2. Never used an alvey. But on the rest of it. 30lb should be enough for those sized sharks. Go with a long heavy mono leader 100lb or so as the sharks skin will wear through it. You can get away with out wire if u run say a meter of 150-200lb mono to a circle hook. Other wise wire is the go.
  3. Mate great way o catch bonnies salmon kings trevally bream tailor
  4. Hahaha that's gold. See squid do that to a few boats but never a kitchen lol.
  5. Mate one thing you should always think of is match the hatch some days its more important then others. If they are tiny (tim tam) sized yakkas everywhere and u throw out a live bonito the kings might not pay any attention to it. To answer ur question there is no to small or two big. Kings will eat krill or a slimie half their own length. Off the rocks we use live bonito or frigate mackrel (usually ended up in getting smoked) but I've also uses yellow tail 4cm long. Your cuttle fish sounds like a perfect sized bait for a good king.
  6. Mat my favourite way of fishing the washes is cubing with pillies just like u would for tuna off shore. Easiest way have a bucket and a scoop and chop a 2kg block of pilchards up into the bucket that's ur bait and burly. Then just flick unweighted cubes of pilchards in to ur burly trail on a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. If u feel its sinking to deep just pull it in and re cast. The only way to stop snagging is bring it in before it gets to the bottom and recast.
  7. Nice fish mate good tosee they are around. Hopefully I can get out there soon and tangle with some fish like that.
  8. Yer as Mich as it sucks losing good fish at least I know I'm doing something right if I'm hooking them.
  9. Unfortunately I have serviced my reels my self so I've voided warranty. It feels good after I stripped it down and oiled and greased everything. Ill see how it goes next time I use it. Its had a good hard run that reel landed kings Jews sharks and big rays. Might be time to retire it.
  10. Planned to fish the high tide Friday arvo after getting out of work late and nothing going to plan got to my spot late around 6. Had 2 fresh squid from the day before so sent out a strip and a head on separate rods. Fellow raider outdoordan was down there having a flick chatting away with him for abit when I got my first take. A pesky banjo shark. Once I had him at my feet the head bait got slammed. Dan was kind enough to hold my rod while I bolted over and grabbed my rod nothing there a few seconds later it loads up and its a good fish, big head shakes and a good run then I start feel him in the reef and in seconds my 50lb fluro leader pops #%&*. So I sorted out the banjo and reset my baits. Next was a salmon on a strip and a good hit on my other squid head. I was running out of time so I decided to send out my remain squid tube whole guts and all. Standing there chatting away (little did I know I had left my drag completely locked up) all of a sudden my rod slams down and my 8000 stradic starts screaming in protest. I jump on the rod and back the drag of a little this was a really good fish. Powering runs and huge head shakes. All I can do is hold on. The it happens he finds that god dam reef again. Quickly drop my rod tip and back the drag right off. Had a few goes at lightly leading him free and even free spoiling him but was having no luck. Finally my wind on pops and nothing. Went back the next day to try again but the rat kings and salmon plagued me and smashed all my baits. But the worst thing to come out of it all (apart from loosing 2 solid fish) was my 8000 stradic high is my go to reel for most things was completely gone. Drag sticking and lost all smoothness and it locks and slips when trying to wind under load. Pulled it apart last night and the bottom drag washer was stuck to th spool, the roller was locked up and bent and bits were coming loose. Tip don't leave reels completely locked up Hahaha. I managed to free the drag washer and regreased my drag and got the roller moving again and tightened it all up so ill see how it goes.
  11. Nice work mate. Yer I don't find yakkas to be the best bait. For fish that size pillies will work or strips of squid are great. But if u can get mullet or tailor thy are gun for the bigger fish.
  12. Mate keep at it and it will come. I think I suffered about 200 cold lonely nights but it was all worth it seeing 88cm of chrome plating at my feet.
  13. Sounds like some good fishing mate. In summer we cube up big schools of rats like that in the harbour. Unweighted baits is the only way to go and smaller hooks and lighter gear. Next time try fishing a 1/0 hidden in a pillie cube. I've landed kings on 4lb Squidding gear (usually 15lb snapper gear though) doing that the trick is go easy on them. Ull never turn their head on light tackle so if u go hard all ull do is make them go harder. Slow steady movements and they should relax abit. Start with the heavier gear and if they are being shy about taking ur bait throw a handful of cubes in the and have one the same size on the hook dropped in th middle of the handful. If still nothing try lighter gear till thy take it.
  14. Cheers mate. Heres a pic. My mates sending me another one for COTM. Only thing I had for a rag to hold her was the tshirt off my back lol.
  15. Having a fish in middle harbour with a mate chasing Jews. Put out some fresh squid while we fixed plastics not long after sunset one of the baits gets smash pull some drag then nothing. I grabbed the rod and waited but nothing pulled up the slack and came up tight. Some really solid head shakes and some good runs and I was thinking Jew for sure. Next a big old flathead comes to the surface. 83cm long and fat. Quick photo and I sent her back.
  16. I reckon if ur camping there its worth putting out a big live bait and see what happens.
  17. If you want to spin from the beach I would be looking at the sustains they are very light. I have the 2500 and 5000 and I love them awesome reels. I rate them over the stradic which I have 3 of but are still great reels.
  18. I haven't had much luck there my self but most people go there to chase snapper or kings. Best advise I could give is go up there with say one snapper stick and one heavier Kingy rod and just sound around till u find fish, bait or good looking areas and put in some marks. Its a huge reef and the fish could be anywhere on it just depends on the day.
  19. Why would you throw the heads away? Squid heads has to be one of the best Jew baits around.
  20. It does look like a grouper in the shot but that was the biggest pig of the session. Bit hard to take a good photo holding rod bucket fish and camera.
  21. Sitting at home this morning thinking Wat to do. First went to try for some mullet for Jew baits for tomorrow but nothing. Got home had to rethink. Decided I would give drummer ago. Never chased them never caught one before. Walked down to fairlight beach with a bucket full of bread and a 15lb spin stick rigged up (no spare tackle). Had to wade out into knee deep water so I had my burly bucket hanging off my arm the whole session. First cast and with in seconds my reel was screaming but pulled the hooks I was not ready for that. Next half hour was a bit slow with a few half takes and missed hook ups then my float disappears and te rod loads up to a good fish after a hood fight out wide he powered straight in and into a cave at my feet which saw me in chest deep water trying to pull him free. Got home out and on to the rocks a solid silver maybe 40cm. Quick snap and he want back. For there it fired up with 4 more silvers and 2 blacks around the 30cm mark and one solid black around 40cm (no ruler so just guessing). At some point I lost both split shots I had on and by the end my hook was nearly straightened lol. Good fun in the rain. They definitely fight hard next time I want to try on the bream gear.
  22. I've got the 18000 Stella. I've also got a 50lb jigging combo and soon to add a 30lb combo to. I know for 99% for Sydney kings its serious over kill BUT in saying that I've been smoked 3 times by kings while using it. Its that 1% of kings that I want to catch. But ill also be heading down to JB fishing for big kings on it. Each trip my mate does he breaks the 15kg mark usually in 10m of water so the gear will be tested. I was looking at the jigging master titanium real nice looking rod.
  23. After a heavy jigging session a month or so ago ive come to realise my rod I have on my Stella isnt the most comfortable rod to jig with its also to stiff to properly load up on a down rigger. I'm not worried about price. What I'm looking for is an 80lb+ jig stick up to 6 foot long. But I want something with a good bend to it with enough guts to turn a big king around close to the reef. Or even a good blank I'm considering getting a custom rod made up.
  24. mate if u are getting back pain just from fishing plastics I suggest seeing a Dr. back problems general don't just go away and can become a lot worse if u don't do something about it. oh and dont try taking up jigging.
