  1. Wow that's amazing! Would be happy to get a Snap half those sizes hahaha! Good luck with the marlin I hope it all works out, looking forward to reading the report when they do score one!
  2. Yeah mate a great way to clear out the cobwebs, the fish was an added bonus hahaha!
  3. Was a bit dusty this morning after a few shandys last night, original plan was to hit the stones, but the condition I was in and wind made it to sketchy. So I decided to leg it to the beach as I was already up. Very windy but I persisted anyway. Fished for a couple of hours, scored a nice fat flathead and an undersized bream. The flathead took a small salted pillie, while the bream went for a worm. Flathead went in the bag for lunch and the bream went back to grow bigger. Was worth getting up early for it. The flathead was just under 48cm... Have a great weekend all!!!
  4. Awesome mate! Nice to see the Mrs in on the action. I bet you have unlimited tackle funds now mate! Hahaha...
  5. Classic haul mate well done! Hopefully there are a few kings down my way off the rocks! Were you casting lures/live baiting/dead baits?
  6. The one I got on the Central Coast last Saturday was around 40cm and really fat as well. I should add that to yellow streak faded pretty quick after being caught but you can still the yellow a bit on the fins. Was very bright when first caught. Had only very light scaling along the flanks...
  7. Same as the trev I caught off the beach last Saturday morning, not sure the name of the sub species though.
  8. Far south coast, then back up to the central coast. Rocks and beach mainly with a bit of boat action as well. Can't wait!!!!
  9. Well done mate, the more you get out there the more you learn. I don't strike at fish, when I feel the rod load up, I lift the tip in a slow smooth action and give the reel a wind, depending on how the rod loads up depends on how fast I wind. I've seen a lot of people strike really hard at fish, has never worked for me. Maybe try circle hooks, that way the fish hook themselves, but generally I find if the rod loads up then a smooth lift and reel action should set the hooks nicely. Good luck with your old man!
  10. Also I have noticed that practice casting in the park/footy field is a lot like smacking golf balls at the driving range, you get some very good distances when practising but this doesn't always transfer over when your out on the course or down on the beach as all the other variables come into play, like wind, sand etc. At the local footy field I consistently reach well past the end of the field, but I'm sure when I'm casting baits I'm not hitting 110m with same cast.
  11. Haha they are addictive mate! Look as you said in your original most fish come into the close gutters to feed, especially a rising tide as its closer to the fresh food washed out from the rising waves. In my experience catching mulloway doesn't mean you need to cast 100m out to sea, but I guess that depends on the beach you're fishing. It's about finding those productive gutters and putting in the hours. I've hooked some pretty substantial fish just behind the shore break if the gutter is deep enough. On average with my heavy beach setup, an old butterworth rod and 650 Alvey reel, I cast a butterflied mullet bait with a size 6 star sinker 20-40m, which has been far enough to reach most gutters without having to wade into the surf. Half those sizes and I can get around 60-70 fairly easy but rarely ever need to cast that far. The only exception is when I cast poppers/metals/floats and squid skirts for fast retrieve off the rocks using my Alvey 650GRBC, then I go for maximum distance, which I reckon would be about 60m for lighter lures and around 80m for heavy ones fairly consistently. If your dead set on belting out well past the breakers, the distance pro's like graphite rods and overhead reels, but keep in mind they are generally not casting with baits but sinkers or plugs on the end of the line. They use styles like pendulum casts and create a lot of momentum before beginning the cast. Why don't you have a look at some different styles and try them out with your current setup and if your still not happy look at a specific distance casting rig? Also a paternoster style rig with sinker on the bottom can add some extra distance... Just remember with mulloway, the bait is key to success and fresh is best. I'm sure others with more knowledge will give you better advice! Cheers mate and good luck!
  12. Hi mate, I smash out some pretty big baits, long leaders and heavy sinkers with my Alvey set ups (big slabs or whole mullet/tailor). How far are you planning on casting?
  13. I have used similar ones before they are good, but I got sick of pulling the weed off after a while. Now I usually just have the sinker running freely directly on the line and have been using star sinkers between 2 swivels on heavy mono off the beach for a while now. I noticed those clips work very well with really heavy weights too. Good luck on the Mulloway!
  14. Another 40mins north and your at the Central Coast, plenty of easy to reach land based spots, just depends on the style of fishing you're going to do. What type of fishing do you want to do?
  15. Well done mate, bet that ray stretched your arms a bit. What was your friend using for bait? There's been plenty of whiting up here in the Central Coast for the last 2 weeks.
  16. You can get some glow lights that clip straight on the rod tip now, have used them a few times and worth a look if you need something like that. Usually just fish the one rod and hold it with my finger in contact with the line, on those really dark nights.
  17. Yeah that's same deal I reckon after a few more sessions with the rod I'll just let it be. You're right the beer was for burley, in a sense if it wasn't there neither would be my bait hahaha... been a long week and that was my couple of hours of me time well spent!
  18. Hahaha as for the Corona, I played taxi driver for the work Christmas party last night, so some light refreshment was required in the early morning; you know just to get everything balanced out hahaha...
  19. Spot on Ray R, I normally head further up Wamberal way but with the recent lagoon opening gave the opening a try. Paid off this morning! Enjoy your reports as Kinny, Avoca and Tezza are my local stomping grounds. Beach worms are the key!
  20. Cheers mate! Yeah I have been and your right makes rigging up a lot easier when collapsed. Every 5-6 casts that second guide from the tip likes to move, but with the Alveys I just lay them on the sand and a quick twist, dunk the reel in the water if need be and away I go...
  21. G'day all, Hit up the rising tide early this morning and it paid off with a nice mixed bag. Took down the two telescopic Alvey rods again this morning and had a ball! Cast the heavy rod out with 650A5 reel and a whole small squid and let it sit out far in the gutter, while I rigged and casted the light rod and reel. Still getting used to a two rod set up as I usually only take the one, but starting to get the hang of it. As soon as the worm hit the water I scored a nice whiting which went in the bag for lunch. Then as the sun started to come up a great little bream which went back after a quick pic... Followed by a shovel nosed shark on the heavy outfit. Thought I had a clump of seaweed until a few little head shakes at the shore break. The 650A5 reliable as always and rod handled it very well! Released it back in the surf... Next up was a small flattie on the light gear, again on worm bait... The little bugger spiked me as I was letting him go! Then I had a good run on the light gear and there was a bit of weight on the end, thought maybe a salmon but didn't jump, after a good little fight at the shore break a beaut trevally was on the sand. Super fat and a top battle on the light gear. After that the bite went quiet and I managed to drag myself away! Hahaha was a great morning session... Felt great to be out on the sand and always enjoy using the Alveys. A last pic of the keepers before I cleaned them up, Christmas party BBQ lunch today taken care of! Have a great weekend!
  22. Also you could try suspending your bait off the bottom with a float and ball sinker underneath, swivel then 1-2m leader then hook. If your using prawns try cooked ones, stay on the hook better than mushy servo prawns. Be happy your catching fish mate, enjoy it, it's all part of the process. Good luck.
  23. Well done mate and good on you for releasing it. Great to see you out there with the young fella too.
