Quochuy, watch the set coming in and look at where the waves are breaking, at either end of the whitewater you'll see a gap where the waves aren't breaking. Usually these areas are the rips running in and out of the gutter, if there are surfers around they will use an out going rip to get out behind the breakers, at least that's what I do cause I'm fat and lazy now hahaha... the water washes in with the wave and then drains through (along) the gutter and back out to sea. On a long gutter I usually fish close to the start or end/edge, but when fishing a short one I like to be about halfway along. If I can't tell I use a light weight and follow it up or down the beach until it stops moving left or right. Good luck!

Hi mate, my Grandparents live down there at Shoalhaven heads but I haven't fished it for at least 15yrs! I do remember further along south of the surf club where the river emptied into the sea was excellent for mullet, bream, salmon, tailor, flathead, rays and shovel nosed sharks; fairly typical beach/estuary species. I can just picture watching Dad and Gramps pulling them hand over fist as a kid, no sooner had the bait hit the water the Alveys were cranking a fish out. That's where I'd go for beach fish down there anyway. Also the rocks at the north end of Gerroa beach was top notch but safety was always an issue. My old Gramps likes to keep me up to date with the fishing down that way and last report was that whiting are on the bite, being caught on live beach worms, but I'm not sure where abouts off the beach this happening. I reckon if you pulled up to any of the walk ways along the road you'd find a gutter somewhere on the beach side. Not sure how the river fishes any more but at the caravan park at Shoalhaven there's plenty of accessible areas to fish. Best thing to do is get out there and have a crack! Hope you score!

Yeah I get the odd one through summer they seem to be a lot more solitary at that time of the year. I'm always stoked when I catch a fish and good old Aussie salmon rarely disappoint.

This was about half way up Wamberal beach. I've heard theres some good fish coming out of the Entrance from a mate at work, but I haven't fished there myself. Was a small window yesterday at Wamberal, 30mins before the bite vanish and that was around 4pm.

Yeh mate, green has always produced for me, never had anything on red but white and blue have also seen fish. I never fish a pillie off the beach without a popper just to further the bait options.

Great you got out there mate, especially in the yak. Sounds like there's a few growing breambos and choppers you can smash up next time your there.

Landed 2 salmon off the beach this afternoon and dropped a 3rd in shorebreak. All on surf poppers, the pilles didn't get touched. Been a long week at work so was keen to get out this arvo, knocked off as soon as I could grabbed my rod and backpack and headed down onto the sand. Have been using squid lately but changed it up with a paternoster rig with a surf popper and pille. Hit the beach at about 3.45 and had the first sambo on the sand at 4pm. Was a good size speciemen, ran straight for the shore on hook up, so had to crank the Alvey like madman. Thought I'd lost it until it leapt at the shorebreak and made a dash back out sea, but was able to wash it up no problems. Pulled the popper out and speared it back into the surf. Rigged a fresh pillie on the bottom gang and cast back out. 10 minutes later another one a bit smaller was on the beach after doing a few flips. No picture of this one as I couldn't be bothered untangling my headphones from phone again (as you can see from the 1st pic the headphone lead has a life of it own!). Scooted it back into the surf and rigged again. Another 10 minutes or so and on again, this time I lost it in the shorebreak when it jumped. Was only a few feet away from where I was standing but saved me having to unhook it. Nothing after that, headed back for a homebrew at about 6pm. All 3 on the surf popper, pretty happy about that and all 3 released to be caught again hopefully some other time. So there's still plenty of sambos about the Central Coast, hoping the tailor come back on the bite soon. Good luck over the weekend!

Hi mate I bought Cobra Tandem so I could take the kids out rated up to 300kgs and very stable platform. I just finished doing some mods, I added a triple tree up front so I have two rods and fish finder working and a crate setup for the rear seat. I usually fish solo so the kayak is a bit of a tub but as I said very very stable. Once the kids are too big to fit in I'll be upgrading to a Hobie Outback as I'm sold on the idea of having my hands free for fishing. Go for a sit on top and theres nothing wrong with a second hand one at all just make sure its in good nick (no cracks and not faded). Setup is up to you but fish it a few times before you drill anything. Chances are if he enjoys it, which he will, he'll look to upgrade in the future so as long as he can get out and catch fish your laughing. Remember to attach leashes to rods and your paddle for when you go for unexpected swims and a PDF is recommended.

Mate that's a skill! Never had much luck catching them, but I have bought live ones from a guy at Empire Bay down here, so the Broadwater seems to hold them. I'll have to try on the beaches in the next few weeks. Thanks for the tips! Cheers!

Size 3 star sinker and ganged salted pillie has always been my number 1 for sambos. I always used to bury my catch head down to bleed out but i always got suspicious when people walked past, thought I was just being paranoid but obviously some people are just %$#@! Now I usually keep my catch in my Alvey shoulder bag, as a lot of the time I fish the incoming tide and on a narrow beach you never know just how far that next wave will reach. After being swamped a few times I decided I'll only fish with what I can carry on myself while I fish. Apart from a bit of blood in the bag every now and then (I use a plastic bag inside the shoulder bag to bleed the fish out, then transfer to a clean plastic bag or simply scale and gut in the shorebreak before heading home) it has been a very productive way to fish, especially if there's nothing doing at the 1st spot you just walk on up to the next...

Sorry mate haven't fished from my kayak there, but have had the kids for a paddle, saw some fish so get out and give it a bash.

I've had sashimi sambo, mother-in-law prepared it was much better than I expected. Flavour wasn't as strong and went really well with the dipping sauce. Doubt I could reproduce the same on my own though...

Bad luck on the kings, sambos and bonnies! But better to have seen them and had a cast than to be sitting class! Better luck next time champ!

I'll check the leaders and tippets (sunline and Todd) out at my local tackle shop, glad to hear they make a difference, as I reckon the line slap I get sometimes would scare a whale away!!! Thanks for the casting tip I have noticed that a raised rod tip does present the fly better, but I'm still to inconsistant in my action to really tell. Hope you bag a big one!

It took me ages to get my 1st as well, I thought there was no fish in there the amount of times I tried and came home with nothing. Then all of a sudden I just started catching them... I think it really is about time and trying different things. My first was on a live mudeye, then quite a few on powerbaits like Chunky Cheese, never any on grubs or tassies and this time was the 1st on worms. So for me there is still no pattern. I find it a lot more unpredictable then beach fishing which is my usual type of fishing, but that makes it more brilliant when I do land one! Good luck I'm sure you will nail one next time you get the chance!

Hi Stan, I've been working on my (lack of) presentation with a fly rod as well. I have been making leaders and tippets from different weight monos (Fly line,25lb, 20lb, 15lb, fly) in 3 sections which does alright for saltwater casting heavy or sinking flies. But freshwater requires much more finnese and lighter lines (10lb, 8lb, 6lb, fly). I've never used a store bought tippet or tapered leader before, If you don't mind me asking, what leaders/tippets (size/brand) have you changed too? Did you notice a difference? Thanks!

Hi mate, any luck off the beach? Windang beaches either side of the Lake Illawarra entrance has done alright by me on the off chance I'm fishing down that way. Using whole pilchards on 3/0 gang hooks, 30cm 20lb leader, swivel, star sinker on 20cm of mono and than another swivel. Suits my alvey well! Also whole small squid (about 5inches) or strips of squid might be another option. Look for a nice gutter and have a crack!
