  1. Awesome! I've only been fly fishing on occasion down there since around this time last year so will definitely brush up on my casting in the saltwater lagoons around the Central Coast until Autum then I'll try the rivers down the Snowys. The rainbow in this post is my biggest to date, a local down there was telling me that the last run before the rivers closed, saw browns average 2.5-3kgs! Would be magnificant to get one on the flyrod!
  2. Trevally and salmon always put on a good show when you hook 'em! Well done!
  3. I have fished it for many years but never really had any success until the last 2 years. I have heard the best times to fish Eucumbene is April before the rivers close and October when they are open to fish again. I'm hoping to break the drought with flyrod in October, if I'm lucky enough to head back down again. Hope you score a cracker if you give it a try!
  4. Love the mountains mate, my olds retired down here so its a yearly pilgramidge for me. Quality country and with snow capped mountains on the main range in the background makes for a special fishing experience.
  5. It sure felt great! Hahaha! A part from mulloway, trout is my favourite eating fish.
  6. Thanks mate. I just installed a triple mount on my yak and plan to do the same around summer. Best of luck!
  7. Headed down the Snowys today, gave the white stuff a miss, took my brother and his mate for a fish instead. We were shore bound so we had Powerbait and Gulp (Chunky Cheese and Sherbert), tried the soft plastic crickets and also a tub of big fat worms, for bait. I had a crack with my fly rod using an olive woolly bugger, but apart from catching my back a few times no dice! So we headed over to Yens Bay at Old Adaminaby and rigged the boys up with a light running sinker rig on a couple of spinning reels with worms. I set up 1 rod similar and then thought I'd try a differnt rig on the little Alvey 500c, so made up a paternoster with 8lb fluro and put a small snapper sinker on the bottom. Much heavier than I normally use when fishing for trout. So after 6hrs of nothing and multiple bait changes, the boys are starting to give me a hard time. Just as they start questioning my fishing prowess (hahaha...) a freight train smashes my top hook with a worm bait. Put on a great show leaping out of the water 5 times before I had it on the bank. A beaut 47cm Rainbow which weighed in at 1.6kgs. That shut the lads up! I put another worm on and cast back out, mean while the others had had their baits out the whole time. 2 minutes later I felt a touch on the line, lifted my rod tip and a quick wind... bang! On again, this time a skinny Brown measuring 39cms. Released to fatten up a bit more. Cooked the Rainbow up for dinner, baked whole in foil with a knob of butter and some salt and pepper, absolutely perfect! Very happy!
  8. Zip locks for sure, work great when storing rigs for the beach, sometimes a small piece of sponge or noodle on the point of the hook if you can bothered stuffing around with it. Always use a uni knot with most of my rigs now, especially anything over 20lb... not had a problem on some reasonable sharkies using 60lb and 100lb mono with a uni knot off the beach.
  9. Squid strips or whole cali squid (Lund's (blue box)) worked for me. With the squid strips avoid frozen stuff that has turned pink and with cali squid I sort through the boxes to find the whitest ones, about 5 inches long. Putting in the time I think is just as important as having quality bait. Read the Jewfish Tactics thread pinned in the Fishing Chat menu, absolute gold!!!
  10. Beach fishing is the best mate! Been some cracker sambos on the Central Coast, good to see some green backs around as well! Looks like the little man was stoked as well!

    Sambo Bonanza

Hi eholdn I usually use an old Butterworth my Grandad gave me as a medium to heavy rod, it's a one piece and teamed with any 650 model will cast anything from an unweighted pillie to a fat slab of flesh with plenty of lead. The sticker on it has long since faded but he told me it was custom made in 1980 (older than me!) Perfect for flathead, sambos, tailor, Trevs, sharks and jewies! Hahaha... I also have an Alvey economy 650 rod which is nice and light to use and a cheap graphite composite I got online for $20 I use with the Alvey 650gbrc for high speed lures... But I always come back to the plain old (ancient hahaha) 650a5 and Butterworth, never fails when a fish is on. What's your rod of choice?
  13. Thanks Roberta, very much appreciated! Will be trying soft plastics for the first time from the yak (and ever really) over the next week, while I'm on holidays down the far South Coast, will be giving them a shot for sure! Cheers!

    Sambo Bonanza

Just past the walk way from Terrigal bend, about 4.30pm - 5.15pm... went the next arvo and not a bite, but the bloke down from me caught 3 tailor and a sambo on pillies. Top news about the jewies might have a go this arvo if the weather holds up...
  15. Great stuff! Can't wait to get yak out again myself. What were those soft plastics you were using Roberta? I've never used plastics before but will do next time I'm in the yak...
  16. Scratchie that's some intense fishing mate! Your becoming a blackfish expert! That water spout is a crazy great pic!

Off Wamberal beach mate... I reckon if I had more baits I would of scored a few more.
  19. Hi, Was hoping for a jewie ended up bagging out on sambos. Had 6 squid baits primed for a jewie but each was snavelled up as they hit the water by some big fat salmon! Smallest was 45cm biggest was 63cm... kept the big one as it was attacked by a shark on the way in. Put on an incredible acrobatic display trying to allude the man in a grey suit, was an awesome sight! Had a some nasty gashes from the encounter and was bleeding pretty bad, so decided to keep instead of releasing back among the surfers. I managed 8 sambos between the six baits, even casting the squid scraps left on the hooks managed 2 hook ups, stoked! Always a pleasure to catch fish on the Alvey 650a5 and the sambos always put on a solid fight. While no jewie tonight, 8 sambos off the beach was a marvellous experience and enjoyed every minute! Green curry tonight with fresh sambo! Hope everyone else is having a top time!
  20. Nice one mate! The beach is my fav...
  21. Best of luck mate hopefully you bag a winner on the weekend!
  22. Yeh is pretty special won't forget this fish ever mate!
  23. Alvey sidecast or Abu 7000i C3 overhead. Alvey are superb for beach and rock, light as well as heavy work and I've heard the Abu 7000i C3 overhead is pretty staunch as well... more technique required than spinning reels, but very enjoyable once learned.
