  1. G’day raiders,

Just a quick report from the last couple of sessions that I’ve finally managed to squeeze between a really busy schedule.

Headed out Wednesday with @back cruncherand my youngest son Cruz (the fish magnet)

We headed north and got there at first light. It was a nervous trip up there with heavy fog that rendered us pretty much blind the whole way.

We arrived safely and began to cast and all things were pretty quiet. The young fella managed a couple of pannies on jigs and me and mick were yet to get a touch. Moved around a few locations but the wind was playing havoc and making things difficult. We finally found a good patch of bait and steady drift and the fish decided to turn up! I managed a nice specimen on a livie and then I could hear Micks reel screaming that ran him all around the boat. A bit of teamwork and into the net she goes. Cracking fish!
I then managed a decent sized Samson fish that went real hard. Tried a couple more drifts but the fish shut down again, so we headed for home.

FRIDAY, was too good of a day not to get out there. I ended up taking a young local kid that’s been asking me a few questions and thought it better to take him out and show him!
Caught a few livies on the way and headed to a likely area. I came up tight first cast and after a few casts from the young fella he had a decent one in the net. After two drifts the sun started to rise and so did the procession of boats in benign conditions. So after been surrounded, we changed areas which was a brilliant move. Got a good drift and the fish came on board thick and fast. I managed to land three in three casts. The livie goes off and the young fella has a brawl with a solid Mack tuna. We then lose a thumping snapper to a pulled hook and changed locations again. Not much doing at the next spot but just at the end of the drift, I’m onto a screamer. Had it on for 5 minutes and just when I thought I had control, bang she’s gone! Ended up being a snapped hook! Damn!!
Moved again, but the conditions now were almost glass off, with no drift! But we decided to have a few more casts and the young fella comes up tight to a screamer. Good runs, good bumps and played it well but insight of the boat it managed to chew through the leader! Not another one lost! Oh well, we still got a box full of snapper and plenty lessons learnt. Keen to get back out there and do it all again!

good work Scratchie. You won't catch anything sitting at home. 🤣

Great country over in the west.

Thanks Yowie! Yeah definitely nice over there. I was keen to wet a line but just didn’t have any spare time! It was a late start for me yesterday. But good to see the boy get stretched

I think your work must have been testing your resolve! If you didn't fish, you must've passed with flying colours!

Great job on the kings. Must be some sore arms in your house after a day like that. :D

Yes it was! Work always gets in the way 😂

The boy was complaining this morning haha!

You can't keep a good man and his sons down. It's like Cod opening season...sheer delight. Good result for a spontaneous trip out.

Definitely making the most of opportunities. There’s not much spare time at the moment!

  4. G’day raiders,

I’ve been a bit absent of late with so much work on, I haven’t  been able to get on the water at all. I spent 10 days in the Pilbara in WA, watching bust ups everyday and didn’t even have the time to wet a line. 🥲

Returned home to another massive week ahead of me and watched the boat sit idle in the driveway.
A small window appeared for me this morning and with two of my boys off from school, I thought bugger it, let’s go!

Headed out at a leisurely time of 630 and got to the island about 7am. Probably missed the best part of the morning but it was still just nice to be out there.
We put in plenty of casts for very little result and it had me wondering if the recent holidays had put a bit of pressure on the fish 🤔

Moved around a few times and caught half a dozen pannies but not exactly what we were looking for. I then decided that we would try one last spot. The eldest boy instantly hooked up to a rat king that was quickly released. One cast later the youngest boy hooks up and had the reel singing. He’s only a little fella and had to hold on tight as this kingy was a bit better than a rat. He gave it everything he had and after a great battle into the net goes a decent kingy! He was smiling from ear to ear.
I was up next and found a decent one as well. We played with a few over the next half an hour and decided to call it quits about 930.

It was beautiful conditions out there and so nice to be finally back on the water again!

    Thanks for reading,

    cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks for a great post - I have the Deckee app on my phone - it has been invaluable in these weather events with warnings etc which is invaluable. However I cannot find the radar on Deckee which is imperative for my work & of course fishing (should I ever make the time to go) Consequently I use both and when in the office lately I have the bom on all the time.

Am I missing something on the Deckee app??!!

No mate, they haven’t attached the radar just yet! I’m sure it will be added in the near future 🤙

  7. G’day raiders,

With my boat in getting a few repairs done, it was time to throw the eldest boys tinny off our local about 500m away!

The last two days with conditions swell and wind wise, they have been perfect to get out and have crack in the little beast!
The water is still pretty dirty with bits of floating debris every now and then but the fish are still there, although it does take a few casts!
So the last two days efforts haven’t been that bad. Managed a few good sized pannies and had some fun on the light spin gear getting into bust ups of tailor, bonito and Mac tunas.
Great fun with the boy for a couple of hours and back home before the tribe wake up! 😂

    cheers scratchie!!!

  8. Really good mixed bag there Yowie! Those Watsons and small Mac have been everywhere up here too! They are great fun on the light spinners. They are so quick. Scare the crap out of ya when they hit the lure right next to the boat! 😂

That's awesome Scratchie. How crazy is that you go fishing for one thing and you catch a surprise. Great Cobia.

Thanks mate! We are always targeting snapper but we could tell that there was a few more decent fish getting around! Just one of those magic days!

Nice cobra I agree they are a hard fighting fish and many get lost at the gaff.

Few years back we struck a school on the north coast 4 fish in a row broke the leader, we were using  80lb jinkai. We finally Landed a 23 kg fish. We were only fishing 15 kg mono outfits.

Thanks Bruce! Yes they are renown for dropping the gaff. They fight totally different to most fish too! Reckon I had one on over the 20kg mark. But on 20lb leader the odds were certainly in its favour! 23kg is a good fish! Well done 👍
