  1. I think Stewy organises it every year to see how many people are sillier than them!!! They are in the lap of luxury with Rob as their personal chef, while we freeze our butts off in the guise of trying to catch one of these pre-historic creatures. Ross (Flightmanager) was cooking up a storm in the short time that we were visiting the houseboat. Beer batter prawns, squid, and another type of prawn dish. Thanks Ross, they were delicious. Cheers Greg

    The Banks

As a kid, we fished the Culburra area for many years, but we only had a tinny and that beach was a bit too far from safety for us to fish. The last time we visited down there, we watched a Trailcraft rigid top bouncing away in the waves on the way back to Orient Point boat ramp. They had been out to the Banks and got a few kingies, but they had a very ordinary trip back when the wind picked up. Cheers Greg

Hi Mike, Warrain Beach - is that the one with the surf club (Penguin Head to Currarong) or the small one from Crookhaven Heads to Penguin Head? What part of the beach is it out from? Cheers Greg
  4. You must have picked the wrong weekend Byron. WE are going to blitz them this weekend !!! Cheers Greg
  5. It will be great to have Byron on the boat - we may actually catch a fish with his help !!! The deckie's name is Alan Can't wait to get out there - just hope the weather gods are kind to us!!! Cheers Greg
  6. If she got a picture of the naked man, send it to me. If I show it to my she might come fishing again !!! Cheers Greg
  7. Maybe we should start a list of LB people who are looking for a Deckie position - just in case Deckies pull the pin at the last minute, or in case someone has a spare spot on their boat. Cheers Greg
  8. Hi Raiders, Can you please add me to this list with a Deckie. We will probably just do the Saturday and overnight. What are Raiders doing Saturday morning? Hairtail are only there during the night I believe, so are you guys fishing in the river or outside on Saturday morning? Are there places where we can pull up for a feed and stock up on essentials? Cheers Greg
  9. On the paternoster rig, do you just have short loops off the main line (3-4") or do you use a 3 way swivel and a single line to each lure? Cheers Greg
  10. I use the skin colour sabiki jig, and cut it in half as the others have suggested, so there is only 3 hooks. I have found that when they are fussy, they usually go into a frenzy when burley is dropped over, so we hold the jig directly in the burley and move it up and down. Away from the burley they won't bite, so use a small amount of burley and keep the hooks in it. The other problem you have is, if you don't get there early, especially the popular spots, dozens of boats have already filled them up on burley and they are no longer hungry. Balmoral is a popular spot, and I found if I dont get there early, they aren't hungry - the poor little buggers are stuffed full of burley. Therefore, you need to try different spots - where they haven't been given a free meal !!! Cheers Greg
  11. Great post Slinky. The first time I chased squid, I got one first cast and I thought how easy is this !!! I must have landed it on his head. I did the same thing for another hour without a touch. I have tried several times since, and have been unsuccessful using all different types of lures, with and without scent. I will have to give it another go - one day when I finally get back on the water. The more I read, the more tips I get, so hopefully with practise and persistence, I will get better. Cheers Greg
  12. You beat me to it - Sorry Ceph !!! Maybe take Ceph with you next time because he is also good at catching them back. I think he nearly has a 100% success rate. You might even get your own cartoon and go into the Fishraider Hall of Fame if you keep this up!!! Cheers Greg
  13. For around $25 the tackle shops have a waterproof 12v halogen downlight on a handle (prawn light) and it is around 1m long with wiring and alligator clips ready to go. Where in the lake were you getting the prawns? Was it near the bridge or further into the lake or around the channel out to sea? How big were the prawns? Cheers Greg
  14. That's a waste isn't it !!! And if you kept it, even though it was dead, you would get fined. Waste of a good fish. Top results on the Kings though. Cheers Greg
  15. Thanks for the heads up on Watsons Bay. Is there any special place? PS When I said I wasn't having much luck with yakkas, I meant I can catch yakkas, but I am not having much success catching bigger fish using yakkas for bait. That's why I am looking to catch some slimies instead. Cheers Greg
  16. Hi Ross, I have sussed the yakkas, although last time we were at Balmoral it was plagued by baby sweep and couldn't get any yakkas. I am looking for slimies as they are a better bait than yakkas. Any ideas on where the slimies frequent? Cheers Greg
  17. Welcome to the forum.... This is the right time of the year for prawning and Windang is a good spot for them. If you are using a car battery, you can float it on a piece of polystyrene foam, car tube (with base), kneeboard, etc - just make sure you secure the battery well. Some of the knee boards come with leg ropes that you can use to tow it around and you can pick them up pretty cheap. Squidding is a different story, and there are plenty of them on the forum. Try doing a search as there are lots of them and you will pick up tips on techniques as well as spots and jigs to use. You will also find pictures of squid on a 2 hook rig in here as well. Just watch out that you don't get squirted with water or ink from the squid - especially the ink. They are pretty harmless, but keep your fingers away from there beak, especially if you catch a cuttlefish. Cheers Greg
  18. There was a bloke the other day that caught a shark with his leg !!! I think I will stick to using a rod and reel. Cheers Greg
  19. Hi Guys, Where are the most reliable places in the harbour to find slimies? How are you catching them? Burley and Bait Jigs Spinning small lures Are they found all day long or just early? I caught some spinning early one morning around the Wedding Cake, but haven't been able to find where they are hiding since. I'm not having much luck with yakkas, can't catch squid for peanuts, so I need to try to get some slimies. If anyone can help it would be great. Cheers Greg
  20. Took the wife & kids on Sydney Harbour on Saturday to watch the festivities. Tried Blamoral for livies but could only get baby sweep, so we tossed them back. Headed over to North Head for some bottom bashing. Ended up with 2 red rock cod, a spotted cod of some description, and the BIGGEST stinky baker I have ever seen - around 70cm. My 8yo son caught one of the red rock cod and the wife caught the rest. I got smoked 3 times by something very heavy (like the bottom) but with head shakes. I had its head turned a couple of times and I would get it up a few feet and then it would head for the bottom again. The 20kg braid was not up to the job and I got busted off twice. I then switched to the 15kg rod with 30kg mono and got smoked again. I thought it may have been a large ray, but do they head shake? Whatever it was, it was heavy and like a tug of war, rather than long runs. Headed over to Clifton Gardens for a break and decided to let the wife off on the Jetty so she didn't get wet. Pulled the boat up to the steps. There were 2 steps close to the boat, one 2" under water and the other was high & dry. Guess which one she picked!!! Pity I didn't have the video camera on her! She slipped on her pride, grazed her arm and leg, got wet all up one side, and she just lay there looking at me with daggers coming out her eye balls. To make it worse, several people were watching. . . . . . Comedy Capers! So now she has a sore arm, sore leg, and is sunburnt (as she couldn't be bothered putting the sunscreen on). Looks like she isn't coming fishing anymore!!! After a break there, we went around to Milsons Point and watched the Tall Ships and the Roullettes, etc and headed home. Cheers Greg
  21. A nice fish on your maiden voyage - I hope it is one of many to come in the tinny. Cheers Greg
  22. Was that just inside North Head and you were in the unpainted tinnie? If so, we were in the white half cabin near you giving you the cheers and thumbs up. Nice fish. Cheers Greg
  23. I didn't mind this 9m Kevlar Cat, but a bit big to tow around. It is being towed by a Ford F350 6.5 litre turbo diesel. The SUV looked like a Tonka truck next to the boat. This picture was when we were towing it up Mt Ousley The SUV wasn't bad either
  24. Looks like the runout tides are all wrong for this week, they are in the daytime. Where in the lake is the best place to try? What is the channel like on the way out to sea? Cheers Greg
  25. Hi Nathen, It sounds good to me. Cheers Greg
