  1. It does seem like squid can see the braided line if you go without a leader. Afew times the squid swam right at my feet and other people would be trying to jig it with straight through braided line but often times they would just stare at other people's and then go for mine when it sinks to the bottom (this was 9lb clear mono straight through). Might be just luck though
  2. I lost an orange yo-zuri the other day, it caught me 10 squid in two outtings. It was starting to become a veteran with all these bite marks. I was stupid enough to use only 9lb mono and snagged it 15-20lb next time! I'm going to yank the rocks out of the ocean hehe For the extra little bit of casting distance it's not worth losing the $18 jig. Btw, you will feel more confident with the more expensive jigs so on the days when it's quiet you know that the squid are not around rather than blaming it on the jig!
  3. Poddie mullets are a great start. Throw one out as a livie, you never know what you're going to get
  4. Nice one Simmo. I used afew 25cm+ yakkas for bait the other day. I felt so guilty about it since there was so much meat!
  5. Nice lizard That's a quality photo you have there, should frame it
  6. I played around with a Snyder Glas rod at the tackle store and boy are they heavy! The rod felt very solid and had nice flexibility at the tip and strength at the butt. I was almost going to buy it but damn it was heavy I couldn't see myself holding it all day. It's cliche but true what bass_beginner said about investing in a good rod at the start. I have this other rod of some generic brand, bought it for $150 and at the time it felt so light compared to any other rod I had used... until I tried out the newer generation rods eek half the weight.
  7. I was in the same predicament as you Jonno 2 months ago, then I went double over budget and got a daiwa sensor 12" with no regrets Silstar crystal blue looked tempting though, my dad has one and it's still functional.

    Shock Leader

It's Penn 10x 20lb mono, probably 3 weeks old. Not the line's fault I think it's me hehe every now and then the line drifts into the rocks but doesnt actually snag I think that is the cause of the weakness.

    Shock Leader

Most likely the abrasion on rocks could have rendered the 20lb mono useless. Good point

    Shock Leader

Hi guys, Last week when I was fishing off the breakwalls and trying to cast a heavy sinker + float with 20lb mono + 40 lb fluro trace I managed to snap the line twice, losing the entire float/hook/sinker/starlight. I've read about shock leaders and how this could be prevented. My question is, are shock leaders the same as the fluoro trace I was using or is it some other material? Also I assume that you would have to have the shock leader pretty long in order for it to be wrapped around the spool when casting, but I can't imagine how the knot can go through the rod guides smoothly. Any help appreciated! Cheers, fibbo.
  11. Those pigs look very built, they'd make some great fillets
  12. Great report and some nice fish there. You are a dedicated fisho getting up so early every day hehe Cheers, fibbo.
  13. Oh hi! My and I were at the wharf the other day scabbing the light from his generator We picked up 4 squid and 3 cuttlefish. Thinking of buying one now for when Mr Sylvania is not around Such a great way to catch squid! Used some of the squid we caught at Wally's to try for jew at Swansea, managed only 3 tailor then they went off the bite completely and the whole breakwall was empty early into the night. Time to invest in some more overpriced yo-zuri's since I lost my gun orange one to the rocks Cheers, fibbo
  14. Hey Sylvanian are you the dude with the generator?
  15. This post was funny az! Keep up the good work
  16. Yum! Flatties are great eating, enjoy!
  17. Awesome, thanks guys! It's exciting being able to catch my own bait land based
  18. Hi fellow raiders, I went squidding with the tonight at Wally's Wharf. It was packed there with quite a few people squidding and catching yellowtail. It was our first time squidding, bought two yo-zuri jigs that I read so much about, a pink 1.8 and orange 2.0. No one seemed to have much luck until I hooked something and wound it back only for it to break free when we were looking for the bucket (the was sitting on it the whole time saying 'get the bucket get the bucket' ). About 15 minutes later I landed a cuttlefish. Another fisho came up and asked if he could use it for jew bait and we gave it to him and wished him good luck. We soon caught another cuttlefish and then called it a night - total 2 hrs of squidding. It was good fun, the orange jig did the damage but strangely a lot of others had orange jigs too such beginners luck One question remains, is cuttlefish good bait? Cheers, fibbo.
  19. I enjoyed reading this post! Keep us updated on your adventures pacemode, for most of us reading about people catching jews is as close as we come Cheers, fibbo
  20. hehe thanks guys. Picked up a daiwa sensor surf 12", went over budget and now it's raining
  21. Hi fellow raiders! I've been out of the fishing scene for several months, just bought a pair of shimano baitrunner 4500 to fish with the . We're looking for a pair of rods now around ~$200 budget each. Purpose is mainly beach fishing, occasionally fishing off breakwalls (no rock fishing too dangerous for her liking). Targetting mainly sambos and tailor. Any suggestions appreciated. fibbo.
  22. That flatty was so hungry he could eat a horse! Nice pics
  23. Thanks guys! I asked on behalf of my dad who is a fishing nut (more so than I). After reading your posts he just purchased a Shimano big baitrunner since he likes to be prepared for that elusive jewfish if it ever happens to strike lol! He's got two shimano stradics as well and treats them like his children!
