  1. Hi guys! What is a baitrunner reel and does anyone use them? All I know is that they can cast far and have a free-spool setting. I'm into beach fishing would these reels be suitable? cheers, fibbo.
  2. There there guys, I'm also a part of the group Quite often I come empty handed, but every now and then I get a flathead or a salmon and I'd be over the moon! We are the type that get all excited when we catch one fish every 5 sessions Cheers, fibbo.
  3. I'm loving your posts landbased, as I am land based also eheh you got me interested in those poppers! If you go mainbar get a $20 refurbished nipper pump from the tackle store coz catching nippers is fun on its own. When I pumped nippers at the wrong time ie. medium tide, there would be stacks of small whiting swarming around trying to steal the prize. I think i'll try one of those poppers just for fun =] Cheers, fibbo.
  4. Well done mate you sound very pleased with yourself. Last year I caught a blue swimmer at Cook's Bridge. The hook barely grazed one of its little hind legs but somehow it managed to stay on. Felt like seaweed until I lifted it out of the water and then I was like that's bigger than what they sell at the shops! You know when people comment about seafood being fresh, well this was fresh - the meat was so sweet and fresh with nice texture. Cheers, fibbo.
  5. Wow nice pics frangkie, that's the first time I have seen pics like that. Can you post more here so I can see as well? I'm stuck landbased and with not many opportunities to go wet a line but I love reading the posts hehe Cheers, fibbo.
  6. Nice story Mondo, what juicy fat beachworms. I love the pics! hehe Cheers, fibbo.
  7. Great discussion guys, keep it going. Afew months ago I went beach fishing at Garie Beach RNP, took about 4 goes until I got anything but boy was it satisfying dragging in that 70cm salmon hehe The tips about being mobile and moving on if you dont get any bites will be helpful to me - will hit the beach again shortly I think! Are there any other nice beach fishing spots around Sydney? Cheers, fibbo.
  8. Nice one, you must have been stoked! Keep us updated on more of your adventures Cheers, fibbo
  9. Nice report Roberta, those blackies look fat!
  10. Popped out on Tuesday afternoon with the gf for a bit of blackfishing @ Tom Ugly's. I think we have been using the wrong type of weed (not even sure if it is weed). I asked one of the blokes there for some of their weed (it was soft, juicy and green). We managed to land four keepers within about 20 minutes, that was so exciting! One time the moment the float hit the water it went down and stayed down - what a thrill! So a question, have I been collecting the wrong weed? The one that I have not had much success with is the one that's thin, curly, fibrous and quite dry. The ones that I have had success with (which I do not know where to obtain) were the succulent, bright green, straight stringy ones that are soft enough that you can just pinch it in half with your thumb and index finger. It smells exactly like blackfish blood lol PS, thankyou Roberta for the info that you sent me on blackfishing. Things are finally working hehe Cheers, fibbo.
  11. I would love to read what you wrote about blackfishing Roberta. I love reading anything about blackfishing actually Cheers, fibbo.
  12. It's true, it is all about persistence and it was very satisfying to be catch one blackfish. I didnt notice any roe or milk/ or could not differentiate it from all the guts. Thanks for all the help and encouragement roosterman and fishraiders =] Cheers, fibbo.
  13. Hi guys! Over the past month I have been blackfishing 4 times, only yesterday was there any luck! The first two times were at Lambeth Park. The weed was plentiful but due to the heavy rain the water was all murky and disgusting. My girlfried and I had no idea how to rig the float properly hehe was a fun learning experience. The third time was last Saturday, we went to Tom Ugly's to try for some bream with pillies because we felt a bit discouraged about not even getting a nibble the other days. To our surprise afew blokes were lifting up quite decent ~ 800gram blackfish over the stone fence. I rigged up the blackfishing float and splitshots and all... only to realise that it was all too light to cast 20 metres out. We immediately walked to the bait and tackle shop and got bigger floats, heavier sinkers and gamakatsu hooks (recommended instead of our mustad ones)... The men gave us some weed (same ones as at lambeth park the thin green curly ones) and showed us how to rig up, and then soon after they left because it was getting dark and the fish weren't biting anymore. Bugger! hehe Forth time, we thought we knew it all. Tuesday - my gf got a surprise phone call that her work place would be closed because the boss was stuck in Melbourne LOL. Collected a bunch of weed, headed to Tom Ugly's rigged up and waited... soon after an old man arrived. He did not even use a float, just did a paternoster type rig with 2 hooks. He also had very bright green weed different to ours and to the ones we saw on this forum. This weed he said he had collected nearby - it was about 1mm thick and was long and straight, looked very succulent and was strong enough not to fall off the hook but soft enough to pinch off with your thumb and index finger. To cut a long story short, he tugged up 6 blackfish within an hour. Only once did my float go down but I was too slow to strike (was quite embarrassing the old man was telling me that I had a nibble, but I couldn't find my float - duhhh the blackfish took it down HEHE too busy talking to the gf and daydreaming). He gave us some of his weed to try, and I did the same paternoster rig and soon after FINALLY i felt nibbles and I striked and bingo I was on. I passed the rod to the gf who had no idea how to use an alvey (she usually uses an eggbeater). I just told her to wind and dont worry about moving the line as I reached for our scoop net. That was it hehe one blackfish after 4 tries. We christened my rod and the scoop net with that one blackfish - was so exciting It started to get dark after that and the old man gave us one of his blackies that happened to be hooked on his rod as he was packing up (lucky!) I guess he felt sorry for us hehe Filleted the blackies and grilled them, added a bit of salt, pepper and lemon. They were delicious Blackfishing seems very hard but feels very rewarding. You could tell a true pro from a total newbie.

    Blackfish

Nice hehe maybe rooster can tell us how too =] Woah I've heard how blackfish fight hard, but never thought that hard hehe I have two other rods rigged with 12lb mono as backup hehe I find the whole fishing thing interesting how it gets people talking. In the hospital the other day I was assisting some midwives in the birthing unit, and this bloke was there with his pregnant and laboring wife. He was nervous as hell lol Usually Muslim couples usually do not let males assist, but I talked to the guy for awhile about all sorts of topics from the rugby to fishing and afterwards asked if I could deliver his baby and he was cool with it. Calmed his nerves down quite a bit as he had a lot to say about fishing Cheers, fibbo
