The rod looks suitable for Alvey reel due to low/mid seat mount and long distance to the first guide. I have a similar composite rod (also from Dinga) and use  both with Alvey and Spin reel depending on fishing conditions.

If you want to try Alvey reel - get Alvey, If you feel later that Alvey is not for you, you can still use the rod with spin reel.

If you want to get one of Alvey blackfish reels cheaper - do some shopping around. Many tackle shops (that are not going to be Alvey resellers ) are clearing now their remaining old Alvey stock at quite attractive prices.

Bag limits are generally well accepted and understood by anglers. I'm still not sure why a fisherman would want a complete fishing ban for the whole of Tuggerah and the other two lakes. Even marine parks don't go that far - usually making only 20% no fishing.

I wish the minimum legal size was accepted and understood as well.  There is no sufficient control over it.

For half price I would. I think the CV does not have any inbuilt maps or ability to add maps so no region issues there.

Garmin Striker CV are without proper mapping, just Quickdraw Contours. Garmin Echomaps CV come with full mapping ability/maps. 5cv is a Striker model though.

If the delivered price is close/below  local second hand unit prices - I would probably buy brand new one from overseas.

  5. Eel jigheads might have a bit longer shank.

Angler shop in Sydney CBD had recenty some kind of TT? jigheads rigs with thick wire heavy duty long stingers

Also, may be, consider worm jig hooks with weights.

  6. The shop that sells DAMs and other Euro rods  in AU - offers almost every month another 20%  (15-25%) discount on top of already  discounted prices. AU RRP $645 - hope it is worth it, however resale value will be limited.

DAM rod comes with 2 different length tips for the price -  so it can be made 10 and 12 feet rod - I presume casting with 12 will be further.

last year and the year before were really bad for surf (sand) crabs where I usually fish so I often used a rig with a small float near the hook. The float is held in place with a float stopper as is used in blackfish fishing, one above and one below the float.

The floats are about 20mm diameter and are made for the purpose. They’re painted bright flouro yellow and red, the idea of which is that they actually attract fish, rather then scaring them off.

The rig works well enough. Sand crabs don’t seem to swim very high up the water column so you only need to be about 500mm up.

this year there are virtually no sand crabs, just a few blue swimmers which I don’t mind catching, so no need for floats.

i bought my floats in NZ, not sure if they are available here.

this is the crab species I’m referring to as surf or sand crabs. A real nuisance. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/489745-Ovalipes-australiensis

I used to use similar size floats to prevent 'cleaned' large hooks rigs from 'anchoring'. The floats were white/red - I guess can be repainted. $1 each in tackle shops or 4 for $2 in Big W.

  8. Shame to admit  -  I got spooled by octopus once 😂

I was trolling baits under the Spit on a kayak  with a rod in a back rod holder. Somehow both Alvey reel drag and alarm became disengaged (after the recent service) and I noticed something stopped the kayak without pulling it and an empty spool only when I passed marina. Instead of slow winding and paddling in the busy traffic area  I decided just to pull the heavy line and leave it on a kayak .  When I got under the bridge - the 'snag' gave up and appeared to be a few kg octopus on  snelled hooks. I paddled to beach and started to wind the line back on a reel. By the time I got to the hooks - the octopus has self released and took the bait as well.

  9. Google images for 'fishfinder', 'helicopter', 'high low' fishing rigs - look at the rigs with floats.  Usually it is a single hook at the end instead of float. They are rather popular in US.  Consider impact of current and waves in the surf to your rig .

No problem. I work off the fact I have a 100 lt fuel tank, my engine is nmea 2000 networked to my Lowrance hds. This gives me lots of fuel use options, which I permanently have showing on my head unit. Litres per hour and kilometres per litre use are constantly showing and changing depending on how I drive the boat. Under a heavy load at a cruise of 40kh I'm burning about 1 litre per 2.7km, this can be up to 3.5km per litre with a light load. So setting my trip to 0 on leaving I know I have a safe 250km range at my worst economy.  Fuel burn for the day was a whopping 74lt, shared between three of us😀

This last big trip was the biggest I've ever done in a day and only did so because of the weather conditions. Both wind and current were in my favour for my run home and due to the lighter load my fuel economy was increased. If the conditions hadn't been in my favour I simply wouldn't of done such a distance. I also keep a close eye on my boat fuel gauge.

Any boat can have issues, infact yesterday one needed assistance and I believe one is still under tow right now from today on its way back to Bermagui. People tend to think a bigger engine will be more reliable but often they have more things that can go wrong in my opinion. The little rib is far safer than most glass or aluminium boats which is why comercial vessels have inflatable life rafts. I also log on with marine rescue notifying them of my location or changes made during a trip.

Im currently enquiring about a twin engine rib for added offshore security.

    Thanks Jon.

Are you giving up with Ocean Cylinders?  I presume both boat cost and fuel expenses will be higher in that case?

  11. 1 minute ago, JonD said:

No, I had done a 230km trip in it the day before, for 0.

Jon, I remember your rib is very fuel-efficient. May I  ask you how much fuel was required to cover that distance?

Way back in the dark ages, in a land far, far away, I started to fish. No commercially known gear though. A bamboo garden cane about 8ft long with a small slit in the thin end. A raid of Mum's Singer Sewing box provided reels of cotton thread and pins, The cotton thread (with a knot in the end) was attached to the cane. The pin was bent into a hook shape and tied directly to the cotton thread (no fancy knots either). A small stone tied on below a twig and the set up was complete. A few maggots, worms or bread dough and I was in business. Worked too! I used to catch all types of coarse fish in the ponds, canals, and streams of England. I almost wet myself laughing when I watch videos of modern-day anglers in the UK. They need a truck to cart all the gear they take fishing nowadays. Some time later I got on the consumer bandwagon and started buying my fishing gear. I never had TOO MUCH gear though, only what I needed. Still buying the odd item now and then, but (usually) out of necessity. Cheers, bn

BN, are you saying that you started fishing with 2lb braid on a custom built rod with all organic baits ? ;) Most fishers nowadays start with a much simpler rig :)

Also, if you want to know what UK anglers feel - check regularly  e bay or gum tree - usually those fishing 'thrones' and complex 'military-grade' electronics are very cheaply for sale when expat leaves AU.

  13. I prefer for winter rocks - thick warm foam PFD,  light waterproof breathable jacket,  hiking shorts , thermals and wool socks. If it supposed to be very wet or windy - long jacket. I use neoprene shorts for kayak fishing - as after first friendly wake my bum is wet anyway.

There are a few great little deep V hulls that are actually pretty good at rest, such as a little formula 15 I once owned. These hulls were from the Haines 14-15 hull mould, which there are several manufactures making under different names. Fibreglass tends to be softer riding due to the more advanced shapes that can be made from them.

There are relatively soft riding and incredibly stable aluminium hulls from the likes of stagecraft, which also run on smaller economical engines than many glass boats.

Then there are hulls like my own current boat which has a 24' v soft riding hull and rock solid stability thanks to inflatable tubes. To top it of my hull at just 5.2m is legally able to carry 12 adult passengers, not that I do but knowing I can safely load my boat from the crew of most other trailer boats if ever needed is another bonus.

Jon, how long is RIB life due to rubber/inflatable parts?

Well if your reel is playing up then make a warranty claim. They wouldnt accept it is your reel has been playing up and you decide to open it and try to fix it. But cant then send it off for a warranty claim.

Warranty is for manufacturing faults. No because my bearings arent smooth after i tried to service it myself or dropped it in water.

What I meant is that the fact that the reel has been opened earlier is not good enough to void the warranty. Shimano's recommended maintenance tips do require opening of baitcaster/trolling/overhead reels though not spin reels.

Self-fixing of a broken reel is totally different story.

Just an FYI guys, if you open a shimano reel, it will void the warranty.

I would dispute the above with Shimano.

    https://www.shimanofish.com.au/content/fish/oceania/au/en/homepage/warranty.html

'This warranty will be considered void if it is found that the reel or rod has been subjected to unauthorised alterations, abuse or damage as a result of failure to provide the recommended care and maintenance.'
