  1. hi mate, what was the weather like. looking to head out tomorrow, concerned about the 2-3m swell forecast
  2. Only one way to find out! Apparently theres the odd report here and there. Alot of people like to keep it to themselves. I was hoping to get out this weekend but the winds will probably keep me searching for snapper instead.
  3. Thats the type of shit thats gonna make people look abroad for cheaper prices..Which idiot made that call?
  4. Hello everyone, i own a Barcrusher 610C. I have a tiny concern in regards to my barcrusher that i'd like to discuss further via a PM or telephone call. If you could please let me know either here or via PM if you own a barcrusher, i would greatly appreciate this. Even if you have access to a mate's barcrusher, you could probably assist. Regards, Daniel
  5. I use size 13/0 when the gemfish are around as the 16/0 seem to be a little too big for smaller gemfish. In saying that, I have caught several of both species on both sizes. I get these hooks at wholesale rates and sell them in packs of 10, 20 depending on preference. PM me if your interested. I always run 3 hooks with an 80lb breakaway trace of 1.5m.
  6. Silver and gold based yamashita jigs were the go today. A mate was using a few home made jigs we brought back from Italy.. Thanks Greg, did you boys end up getting any Jew? Yamashita and yamashita live series. Thanks mate, boatbased. Hi mate, thanks for your concern. Two of us were fishing, well one and a half, my mate took comfort in the cabin of the boat as it was 'too cold'. Had their been more people, we would have kept going
  7. Thanks mate. In and around the harbour, plenty around at the moment. Have to get there before sun up though!
  8. Hey guys, Its been a long time since i've posted a report. So here goes.. Had an early start, with the intentions of stocking up on squid then bottom bashing browns for blue eye. Squid were no problem but received info that the current was roaring out there, so the trip to browns was called off. Armed with plenty of bait, half a dozen squid were stripped/live baited and converted into several kings between 71-80cm at one of the wrecks at south head, whilst the others were kept for a feed and bait for future bottoms bashing and big jew sessions! We then tried chasing some snapper and flathead on a few of the marks I have within a few km of the heads, but all I could find were undersize fish everywhere!! Aren’t there any productive snapper or flathead spots around the heads?!! Does one always have to travel to Long Reef or The Hump to get a decent feed of snapper! We also managed a few good sized chinnaman leatherjacket and a massive red rock cod! DAN
  9. This is exactly what i expected that link to show. That document is dated 2005, and the table is based on data and estimates from 2001/2002. You need up to date information to make your argument plausible, until then, continue learning how to tie knots and cast a rod. And you say Snapper arn't a schooling fish? You have no idea, I almost feel sorry for you. Obviously your experiences govern that decision Before you come on here and throw words like 'knob' around, get yours facts straight. And stop insulting yourself. You have clearly misunderstood my intial response.
  10. Hi dan, As mentioned previously, this change won't affect me, so i'm not going to waste my time going into any depth on this particular species. Fullstop. No further conversation in regards to jewfish shall be directed at me nor discussed with me, as simply, that is not the message i was conveying. What i will say though, is that with this change, there will be unneccesary changes and restrictions placed on other species (without notice and without consultation). When they have strong backing behind there proposed actions/decisions, they will abuse that power and enforce new laws on a number of additional species and mediums. We have seen this happen time before. At the moment there is speculation about a number of species having further restrictions(kings to 75cm, squid to 10, blue eye to 2 and the list continues), including methods of fishing (ie. banning of electric reels). Based on their research on this specific species (which i am yet to see anywhere), they speculate and propose restrictions to the bag/size limits and even in this case, closure zones/seasons. Some i agree with, some i dont (each to there own). Take Snapper for example. There has not been any significant increase in numbers or average sizes since the size limit increase many years ago. It will be the same for jewfish and several other species. If you've ever caught a jewfish, you'd know that hardly anyone keeps anything under 75cm because they taste like soap(hence the name 'soapies'). There are a minority that do though! The more feasible and sensible approach would be to restrict bag limits only. A bit of education for you: Us rec fisho's dont take 1% of what the pro's do, a single day of a pro would account for a year of rec catches combined. Hence my conclusion of 'do nothing', to the recreational limits. By all means, target the pro's, but to rave and rant and support this when there is no factual evidence that 'recreational fisherman are destroying jewfish stocks' or 'increasing bag limits will increase average numbers of species', is naive. Each to their own i guess.
  11. Size limits for certain species have been debated for years on end. It appears the size limit will be increased to 75cm. Many will agree, alot more will disagree. A fishermans inability to catch his bag or a larger model of jewfish shouldn't be the basis of why we should all panic and raise the size limit to 75cm. If anything, i'm catching more jewfish and bigger jewfish now than ever before at times and methods i never would have believed if you told me 10 years ago (ie. middle of the day, on plastics/hardbodies). This change will not affect me, as i catch all my jewfish in the river and harbour and don't like to eat from there, but with this will come the confidence and backing to make more idiot changes to other species such as squid, kingfish, dolphinfish, blue eye etc. Won't be a happy day, when there is a size limit on squid or a bag limit of 10! Revise your poll with a 'do nothing' option.
  12. Thanks for all your help steve. Brickman, i've purchased the 12" gimbal mount. Are you saying i need an additional backing plate?
  13. Hey guys, Where does everyone prefer to set their downriggers? In the rear rod holder towards the back of the boat, or in the middle rod holder and have it run to the side of the boat on a slight angle. What are the advantages and disadvantages. Any help is appreciated.
  14. Hey guys, Looking at purchasing a Scotty downrigger, probably a strongarm 1085 with a 30" Boom or the 1050 with 23" boom. Has anyone successfully mounted a Scotty downrigger, any model, to a barcrusher? If so, what mount arrangement did you use and where have you placed it? There isn't enough clearance from the back rod holder with either size boom and I don't want to drill holes in the boat. Have you successfully used a gimbal mount from the middle rod holder or A rail mount(will probably have the same issue clearance wise)? Please help me as I was just about to purchase a DR tonight, lucky I decided to take a few measurements. Any help is appreciated.
  15. Hey mate, What depth did you have your DR bomb and baits deployed at?
  16. Hey guys, any size to the flathead? Regards,
  17. Hey mate, great catch..was that you fishing at the tiuggerah wreck south of marley?
  18. Hi all, I was just wondering if there are any other deepwater honey holes that people might know about for blue eye cod and gemmies? Obviously there’s browns and heatons which i've seen host up to 75+ boats at any one time, but are there any others out there? Surely, there must be a heap of other sea mounts or fish holding grounds out there? Anyone care to share? Regards,
  19. Do agree. Please let us all know of the outcome. Cheers.
  20. I guess thats one avenue the men can explore/pursue. The statement as per the regulation does not exactly align to whats in the saltwater guideline 2012. Which one has a higher authority?
  21. They only left the old men, aged 76, with two lines each. Half of the possession limit.
  22. I invite a fisheries officer to this thread to provide clarification, so we all have the ability to pin it to the next inspectors forehead when they try to screw us over, for something so small. What a ridiculous excuse for a job. This is what our licences are going towards? Theres crimes, murder cases, rape cases and theft out there and these fisheries inspectors stand tall over confiscating a few hand lines from old men? Why didnt the commonsense prevail then? Its an outrage!
  23. The legislation clearly states that you are to have no more than four lines in your posession. It makes no reference to having rods rigged or unrigged. Whilst your response seems logical, there is still plenty of room for the unsavoury characters to pin you as they please. Again, unless its in writing, don't trust these bastards. What they are saying is DIFFERENT to the legislation. Common sense has no bearing in the court of law. This is exactly the case. But being there were two similar cases in one day at two different boat ramps, this task has probably been specifically assigned to them.
  24. Hey all, An elderly friend of mine, aged 76, and his mate, had all their handlines taken away from them at the boatramp last weekend by fisheries as they were in possession of more than four lines each. They had no undersize fish, and had all their licences/safety gear. They may have had 12-15 between the two of them, and because of this, they had their lines confiscated and asked to only choose two each to keep. The lines were not all the same, some had squid jigs on them, some with larger trevally hooks, some with a metal blade tailor lure and some with smaller whiting hooks. Their intentions were always to switch and swap as they targeted various species, ie. squid, tailor, whiting, trevally etc. This to me is a poor act on the fisheries part, at worst give them a warning or a small fine, but don't take their gear! It is clear that all 12-15 lines were not in use at any one time, nor could it be possible, but the legislation does state that anglers are permitted to be in possession of a maximum of 4 lines per person. I always knew that you could only use four lines at any one time, but i was never aware of the possession limit of four. A similar occurence happened at another waterway on the same day, where one of my mates was approached and fined for having more than four lines. I have been checked by fisheries over 20 times in the last few years, and i've always had in my possession more than 4 lines. Never have they pulled me up on this. The majority probably have more than four rods in their possession as it is the most effective way to target a range of species in one day. Look at tournament anglers for example, they can carry up to 20 outfits per tournament. So this means, for many of us offshore anglers, if fishing in two, we are permitted 8 rods/lines. Perhaps 5 game rods for a spread, 2 jigging rods and a popper rod = 8. I also like to bring with me two squid outfits and two small spinning outfits for bonnies and macks. And i always have done this, so if i was ever to be found in the past, they would have collected thousands of dollars worth of game gear because i had a few extra rods? This also means that if you plan a week long trip to port stephens and plan to target snapper one day, marlin another, kings and squid another, and flatties another, that the maximum rods you can have in your possession is four rods each. You don't even have to be fishing, according to the legislation if they catch you with more than four rods each on the highway or anywhere, they are in your possession and you will be pinned. So if travelling in three, your 12 rods must cover all of the fishing you intend to do above. This also means you can be pinnned taking 6 rods to the tackle store for having more than the permitted amount in your possession. Unlikely it seems, but after last weeks episodes, perhaps not. This rule should be abolished. Sure its easy for us younger guys to tie knots on the water and quickly swap and change, but what about the older guys, they have enough trouble tieing knots on at home, let alone on the water on a cold winters days. Visibility and coordination can become a real issue for these guys. And the fisheries should use some common sense. It's mere impossible to use more than four lines per person. If i have 10 rods in my possession (a mixture of game, jig and spin), i'm not going to use them all at the same time! What are your thoughts..
