  1. Cracker of a day out. Weather couldn't have been better, even managed to get in a swim. Fishing was a touch slow, tons of undersize trevs, sweep and bream. Had a butterflied yakka out on one rod which didn't get a hit all day. Another live yakka on the bottom produced a nice sambo around 65cm. Caught another couple of bream later on in the day for the table which went down a treat. Cooked the salmon in a paprika beer batter - so good! Saw a few raiders mention cutting out the red flesh and it certainly makes the difference.
  2. top day by the sounds of it! stonker of a salmon as well. nice one
  3. cracker! nice one bud. still waiting for my first...
  4. thanks bud, have some cuttlefish in the freezer ready to go for tomorrow. will hopefully have something to report back on
  5. sounds like a good sesh mate, were the sambos taking the squid off the bottom?
  6. Headed out west of nielsen park yesterday morning with my girlfriend, real nice morning, sun out, not too much wind to speak of so was looking forward to a long day with some lines in the water. First bit of burley in the water and things looked very promising, probably the thickest ball of yellow tails i have seen in my life, all perfect livie size as well. Could see some good trevs and bream down bellow as well. Set out a ganged pillie under a float on one stick hoping for a tailor or salmon - literally didn't get a touch for hours. Pulled up countless yellowtail, sweep, undersized bream/trevs/snapper for a while before i heard my livie rod scream. set the drag to strike and nothing :/ (not sure whether i should have my drag set really loose while i have it out or not - any tips on this?) Anyway - short time later i'm pretty sure i find the fella responsible. Sizeable kingie - guessing somewhere between 80-90cm starts harassing everything below. He was circling my ganged pilchard but just wouldnt touch. i was throwing unweighted prawns, bits of bread... nothing. so annoying, then hid a hook in a pilchard head unweighted and sorta cast it out and dragged it along the surface if that makes sense? came howling behind it, thought it was going to smash it right underneath me but then pulls out last second. Had a heap of yakkas to throw at him but every time i threw one out this bloody penguin came and took him (must have taken about 6-7 - he was hungry...) After all that excitement died down i set out a butterflied yakka on a gang hook after i took the float off. 10 mins in the water the rod keels over and has some serious weight to it. Took a good 5 mins or so to land on the 15lb gear, was hoping jewie or big snapper but was my first banjo shark. Still a good bit of fun, 10kg+ easy must have been 110-120cm? didn't have any measuring gear with me. By then another fisho had joined us on the ledge and saw me bring it in, asked me what i was using so i proceeded to give him a set of gang hooks and a coupla yellowtails i had spare. Sure enough he brings in a lizard pushing 80cm first cast!! haha. She went back thankfully. Nice day in all. will get back out there on the weekend hopefully, waiting for these bloody salmon to come in.... still shot of a vid i took of kingie hence poor quality: and the banjo. big bugger!
  7. Long time reader/learner - first time reporter. Headed down to the ferry wharf with a mate around 8pm to try for some squid and whatever else that was willing to take some bait. Conditions were perfect, just on high tide, super still and a full moon. Unfortunately things didnt go as planned, had a flick with 3 or 4 different jigs for no takers. Had some rods set out with a bit of squid i caught the other day and not a touch. Thought we should try around the corner near catalina for a bit of a change. Again super quiet, burleyed some bread roll crust as the tide started to move out and saw some small gars or yellowtail have a look, gave me a bit of hope. Walked up and down the wall trying for squid some more when i saw a fairly decent splash in the burley trail and rushed back over. A decent silver flash was lurking beneath the bait fish so i thought i'd chuck out a little piece of unweighted bread. Sure enough 2-3 seconds after it hits the water line starts peeling off (8lb mono on my squidding setup) and called it for a good bream - kept going and going and i was starting to think it had some good size to it. Played cat and mouse for a minute or two until i got it to the wall and saw a thumper trev, didnt have a net so had my mate reach down to try and scoop it with a bucket to no avail, after a super tense minute or so he managed get a handle on it and lift it up. Came in at 48cm - PB by a good 10cm or so for me. After that things went quiet so packed up, had a few more flicks at the wharf and managed a cuttle.
  8. Yes, though not all of us are Heston blumenthal. Just makes life a bit easier, and If it's left overnight I think it adds a nice subtle flavour to it as well.
  9. marinade in kiwifruit for a few hours. dry it off, dust in some flour, put it through and egg wash and then roll it through panko breadcrumbs, dried coriander, chilli flakes, salt, pepper and some grated garlic. into super hot oil, only needs a minute or so. the kiwi fruit tenderises it perfectly.
  10. big bait tends to catch big fish, or at least weed out most of the littler ones. been catching a few good snapper to 38ish cm landbased in the harbour the past week on a ganged pillie. i personally prefer unweighted, as the weight of the pillie and gang hooks is enough to get out 15-20m or so and moves more naturally in the water. i find fishing an hour or two before the high tide you will have your best chance at getting a good fish, especially late arvo or early morning... good luck
