  1. incredible what a 12cm difference makes. coming in thick and fast for you two lately.
  2. And for the record - on quick inspection of the lucky craft site it is the 'ghost baby BG' colour SM65-148GBBG
  3. First thing I did Ryder! Was pushing it on those last couple as it was - luckily they were hitting the rear treble more often than not. That's a nice little collection there blood knot, mind me asking what the top right one is? Looks a winner!
  4. some healthy green eyes there mate! well done.
  5. The Bubble Pop's? just had a look on their website, look the goods! probably going to invest in a few more poppers/stickbaits anyway so looks like a good starting point. Thanks mate!
  6. Thanks guys, and yes Scratchie - Sammy 65 doing the damage! great little lure, only trouble with it is the occasional foul hooking while casting into the wind. Not sure of the colour code but transparent and prawny looking. Had another crack yesterday arvo, water felt a little bit cooler which also resulted in a few less follows/hits. Did manage another one which went 32cm - nice and fat too. took him home After the whiting went quiet - think they might have spooked - moved over towards the sailing club at rose bay and was casting into the moorings, managed about 10 choppers in 15 or so casts before i got too anxious about losing my lure so headed home. Good fun on 3lb! Nothing better than seeing a fish hammer it on the surface.
  7. Had my first propper crack at them on Sunday just for an hour or so, was tricky with the wind blowing a gale but still managed a couple of follows which was promising. Went down again yesterday after work for a quick session and for the first half hour on the slack tide didn't manage any interest. Finally saw two big flashes of silver behind my lure but no hook up - then two casts later got my first! There were 3 fish fighting for it which was pretty amazing to watch. Stupidly enough i went back into shore to take a photo and by the time i got back out there didn't have much more luck. Saw a shovel nose cruise past my feet and a couple of boils a bit further out but no takers. Must say it was the most rewarding fish i've caught in a while - cant wait til the waters warm and they really fire up!!
  8. Recently bought a little selection of these SP's, havent seen them pop up on the forums before. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience/success with these? Detailing is amazing, going to have a crack during the week. http://www.river2sea.com.au/categories.asp?cID=620
  9. Had a crack just before for an hour or so as well. Lots of follows, couple of hits but were a bit small to hook up. Wind didn't make life any easier either. Good fun nonetheless
  10. Interesting post, do you think it's still too early to be targeting them off the surface? Certainly looking forward to cracking my first on a lure!!
  11. Was quiet on Thursday as well, just a flattie and bream for the table after a solid few hours fishing. Would have been lovely on the harbour yesterday though!
  12. Nice vids! looks like a lot of fun. Sammy 65 doing the damage? bit tricky to tell
  13. top catch that one mate! Bad luck on the king.
  14. mate I reckon you could get away with 4-6lb and just up the leader a touch depending on what you're targeting. will certainly help in casting distance and sensitivity to bites. I've got a setup with 3lb and a setup with 8lb and you'd be surprised the difference it makes. Only trouble with the lighter lines is wind knots or having it wrap around your guides. nothing a bit of practice won't fix though!
  15. Nice haul mate! What were they hitting if you don't mind me asking?
  16. Oh in that case I'm with you! Very surprising to say the least. But as yowie said - a lot of fish respond to it, at least as burley.
  17. Will take you up on that offer for sure old boy! Trev was tops, soy and wasabi - best white fish for sashimi in my opinion. Sydneyfisher12 - caught plenty of bream on bread, smallish hook, wet your fingers and gently press it around the hook leaving a fluffy bit at the top. Very under rated bait. Cheers for the tip on the float - dont think i had it set deep enough. Always next time!
  18. Spent the weekend up at my uncle’s little holiday shack on Scotland island with my girlfriend - such a beautiful part of the world. Got down there Friday night and got a fairly early night in so I could get up first thing in the morning. No trouble waking up, was keen as mustard to get down there with the squid jigs and see if I could pull up a few green eyes. Was already about 25 degrees when I woke up, but to my dismay as I’m sure a few other fishos can attest to, it was HOWLING. I read the forecast and knew id be in for a windy one - but not a 5 bloody 30 am! Needless to say, it made life very difficult and with the tide fairly low it resulted in a donut on the squid. Went back upstairs, went back to bed and made some brekky then it was off to tennis court wharf to pump some nippers. Spent an hour or so down there having a little swim and collecting bait. Got back to the shack and we both headed on down to the jetty to send some down. Was very quiet, with only undersize bream and pinkies coming up before the first of the storms rolled in. Took my mind off fishing for a while and had some lunch and a lie down waiting for a break in the weather. Finally at around 6:30pm once the second storm had come through, the wind changed direction and died down a heap. I also caught a glimpse of my bread burley which I had thrown in a good hour or two previously come back with some mullet taking it on the surface. So back down there I went with some bread and tried my luck - even with my lightest set up they were being very finicky and I was getting disheartened. After about 15 minutes of trying, my bread finally gets inhaled on the bottom and had some line peel off. Nice mullet I thought, had a bit of weight… Took another little run, real nice mullet I thought. Finally comes up and to my surprise (and delight) a smashing little snapper! 31cm - some dinner sorted! Anyway my girlfriend heard my excitement and came down to join me. Throw out another piece of bread and finally the mullet played ball and a nice little 33cm model comes up. Next it was her turn and she was on! This thing was stripping the 3lb power pro at a rate of knots - she handled it like a pro though and after a nifty little 5 minute tussle up comes a 40cm trev! You beauty! We gave it a bit longer and I picked up two nice bait sized squid for the next day. The sun was nearly down and I was on again, a stonker bream just shy of the 40cm mark, gave a good account of it-self too. A few more little trevs/pinkies came in and some cute little fish which I’m not sure of. Also had my livie rod out - without a livie mind you - and went to bring it in and felt a bit of weight. It was coming up, thought it was just a big bit of weed but nope, there’s a bit of movement there. Comes up - a great big bloody toadfish - bigger than the one I caught the other day. My luck eh. Didn’t measure him, was well over 50cm though and weighed a ton. Made some really strange croaking sounds - suppose they don’t call them a toadfish for nothing! Had the bream and snapper for dinner - was amazing and off to bed for another early start. Looked like a much more promising day the when I got up - though a touch chillier - and got down there looking to bring up some more squid in the hope of a kingie amongst the moorings. All the signs were there for them to be around but they just would play ball! Threw about 5 different jigs at them and no luck, other than one little cuttlefish which I dropped getting him up… Anyway wasn’t too sure how to go about targeting the kings from the jetty, so decided to chuck on a weighted float with a stopper about a meter or so above the hook, with half the hood on. Perhaps someone can inform me on what the best way to go about it is for next time? Other than some rather pesky looking chunks getting taken out of it - which I’m assuming were little choppers or some jackets - I didn’t get a hit all morning by which time the wind had picked up again considerably - making it a real nuisance having to recast the float out again and again. My girlfriend was getting hungry and all we had was that trevally so I thought id wade over to where the green marker is on the SE point of the island to try for some whiting or flathead. About 5th or 6th cast with a 3” gulp minnow and up come’s a nice 50cm flattie. Lunch sorted. Went back to dispatch him and cook up a little feast. Fried flathead fillets w/ garlic, butter and lemon - trevally sashimi - sweet potato chips and salad - yum! After lunch we both headed back down the same spot and pumped some more nippers to try and get onto some whiting. Unfortunately as soon as we got there, the wind picked up about 10 fold and made it pretty uncomfortable. Under a bit of pressure to head back, I put away the plastic rod and slooowly walked back along the wharf trying to sight cast some fish. Saw an absolute horse of a bream, so I crushed a few of the nippers in some sand and threw it in for burley hoping he would hang around. Down go’s an unweighted nipper and he got smashed as soon as he hit the surface for no hook up unfortunately. He got spooked and moved on so slowly again I started walking back. Saw two long shadows slowly moving through about a metre of water, couldn’t tell what they were due to the chop from the wind. Of course I decide to throw another nipper out infront of where they were moving and as soon as I did the wind died down - two HUGE long green things - looked like garfish on steroids - Long Tom? Barracouta? I thought they were just going to swim past but to my surprise one of the turns back and head straight for my nipper - takes it and fight lasted all of about three seconds, 6lb leader had no chance. Fun to watch though and a good signal that it was time to head back. All in all a cracker of a weekend, shame I didn’t get a kingy I had been hoping for but will come better prepared next time. Sorry for the essay - wrote this in Word and its telling me its 1200 words - ha! Few photos of course.
  19. Caught some literally half an hour ago. Plenty of soaked white bread burley, then on a smallish long shank hook just squeeze some bread around the shank and leave a fluffy little tail above the barb so it won't sink straight away. Light leader too - 10lb fluro max
  20. think tef1on is right actually! nice guess. Female Blue Groper. It's odd Adam, always thought it was a fairly lifeless little bit of the harbour, though when i was a lot younger i would go down and fish waiting for my mum to get home on the ferry during winter and their would be about 1000 pike swarming underneath the lights every night. would eat anything you threw at them. Would have it's days though im sure. Puffer fish as i mentioned was a 100mm wriggler - thought it was bloodworm but it's not i just checked, more of an orangey colour. will have a look when im home, and the flatty was taken on 2.5" zman grub. bloodworm i think. getting my colours all mixed up :S both using TT 1/8 jighead with a double hop, 5-10 second pause and repeat. 6lb leader too. Im heading up to scotland island this weekend so hopefully will have a bit more to report on!
  21. Some serious fish there mate! Nice work.
  22. Haha, Thought i hit a snag, only 3lb line so i was trying to gently ease it out and all of a sudden line just started slowly peeling off, tired out pretty quickly and came in shortly after though he did take one more little dive under the jetty to no avail. P.S. And Sydneyfisher12 - he was taken on a 100mm bloodworm wriggler believe it or not - so would fall under the lure category! didn't measure him as i didnt have a ruler on me and didnt really bother as i was putting him back, but you can certainly judge somewhat in comparison in to the Italian mans shoe - not lying when i said he was the size of a basketball! was massive! and i must say - i didnt realise how firm they are when they blow themselves up, really really solid. ha edit: no one know what that last fish is? had some size to him as well!
  23. Day off work yesterday so managed a pretty decent session! Didn't have a car available all morning so walked down to Double Bay wharf to flick some plastics around. Another old Italian guy down there who wasn't catching much and other than a few tiny hits that i'm assuming were little pinkies i didn't have too much luck either. I did however catch what i think is probably a raider record pufferfish? This thing was literally the size of a basketball, very funny experience. After i put him back he slowly deflated himself letting out these strange sounds, much to the amusement of two American tourists waiting for the ferry. Have a video of it but not sure how to upload? Anyway was able to take the car later in the afternoon so headed down to my spot near the Nielsen Park jump for the best part of the run out. Was armed with some bread for burley and king prawns. Started off a little slow, caught about 1203129489u14901240x sweep but no yellowtail which was annoying as i took my livie rod with me too. Finally the burley started to do its magic and i caught trev after trev ranging from about 20-35cm. All released to fight another day. Caught a few jackets too, including one beautiful (if you can call it that) fan belly? Also caught another pretty little fish which i'm not sure of the name of, perhaps someone can help me out on that? Eventually ran out of bait and it was such a nice afternoon i thought i'd stick around for an extra half hour throwing some plastics around. Got a few hits, and then on about my 10th cast felt some weight, struck, and i was on! Certainly feel like i'm getting used to them. After a short battle ensued up comes this cracking flattie - estimate around 50-55cm, hard to tell with it still in the water. Unfortunately due to the earlier trevs running me under the oyster lease and chaffing my leader, and no net, i lost him trying to carry him up onto the platform. Only 6lb leader so was bound to happen i guess. Still nice to know that plastics actually work! A few pictures.
