  1. Saw that same pod of dolphins yesterday as well - what a site! Shame the dollies weren't playing though, we hit the fad early and didnt see anyone hooking up, same story and the buoy a bit further north. Trolled every inbetween for just the one hit on a deep diver but no hookup. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Must have been Jo down there was it? Saw that flattie he pulled up was a cracker! Shame you didnt get anything to take home, top day for it though! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Beer

my staple would generally be James Squire's golden ale "The Chancer" In saying that - its hard to go past a 3 Sheets (Lord Nelson Brewery) My beer of choice for sure.
  4. Most jetties on the south eastern side of the harbour have been producing. Find one with deep water, moorings and preferably no ferry traffic and you will be in with a good chance Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. First one a peeled prawn, second a yakka cube. Both unweighted - wouldn't have a sniff of the livies today Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. 2 in 2 days. 5lb braid 6lb leader Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Was a super high tide so not far, had my mate climb halfway down the ladder and grab the leader. Popped as soon as he came up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Got nailed by a stingray yesterday arvo in rose bay and ended up in hospital for a few hours so no more wading the flats til I get myself some waders! Decided to head down to a local jettie this morning instead with my mate. Was there at first light - first bait in the water was a dead yellowtail under a float which got demolished after about 5 minutes in the water. Had it pinned through the head and the rest was eaten. By that time had some livies in the bucket so threw one out. Another 5 minutes and the float goes under - went to strike it and only got the head back. A while later my mates bream stick starts screaming but got takes straight into the moorings and it pinged. Same thing a half hour later but he managed to hold onto it for a good few minutes before it spat the hook. There were fish boiling everywhere but once the sun was up they didn't seem to take much interest in the livebait. Once the tide slackened things went quiet for awhile but kept persisting with some unweighted prawns and finally got a good take. Didnt feel much weight and called it for a decent trev, but once it came up and idled onto its side I knew I was a king. Had about 20 mates with him aswell! Mustn't have known it was hooked because as soon as he saw the jetty it took off for shark island... 10 minutes later back and forth with a few sketchy moments around the pylons, my mate managed to grab the leader (only 10lb mind you) and lift him up. Was just under legal so had to put him back but was super stoked to get my first under the belt - all the better on light gear! Had another bust off after that and a few trevs. Going to have another crack tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Numb rays - very nasty pieces of work. Have been knocked off my feet by one!
  10. Mate some great footage there! Fishing doesn't sound bad either.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Make great sashimi - bit annoying to prep so usually only use the bigger ones. Japanese use them all the time - 'Aji' they call them.
  12. Long day - got sent home from work early due to the drama at Martin Place. Got to the point of Nielsen park (western side) around 2pm. Flicked plastics from there all the way down to Rose Bay - literally - for barely a touch... let alone a fish. Tried everything - different lures/jigheads/colours/retrieves... just wasn't happening. At one spot along the rocks i saw two poor catfish that had obviously been caught the night previous and just left there to rot - and packets of prawns from the grocer - really upsets me - as revolting as it was i cut their bellies open and put them back in the drink for the crabs and what not. By 5:45ish i was down at Rose Bay flats - wind had picked up considerably and i only had my flattie stick with me but decided to try some top water whiting anyway. Took a while but did manage one on the Sammy before the wind made it impossible to work - so switched to a popper and got another littlie. Tide was fairly low so had a quick cast at the moorings before i went home and managed a flattie on my second cast which leaped probably 2ft out of the water. Nice way to end the day.
  13. what a beast! very well played mate.
  14. How'd you go at Conjola mate? Will be down there over new years for a week or two.
  15. Went down for an hour after work yesterday arvo. Productive little session. Second cast a nice little fish around 30-35cm mark. Worked my way into slightly deeper water and missed a good hit, only to get him next cast - prob my PB - certainly my best at rose bay - didnt have ruler on me but conservative estimate of 65 - prob closer to 70cm. Was going to take it home for a dinner but messed around trying to get him in my bag and the leader ended up giving way. Caught two more tiddlers and then another one on my last cast similar size to the first. Maybe touch bigger. Had some fishing boiling about 30m away - not a big school but HUGE splashes. Wouldn't touch my plastic unfortunately. Should also note I was down there the day before for barely a touch, but did hook into something that would have dragged that bigger flattie backwards and then some! Tussled with it for 5 minutes, big runs and big head shakes before my bloody braid snapped above my leader knot!! Must have been slightly frayed. Silly mistake. (8lb fire line crystal) All caught on z-man minnow 4" motor oil w/ some sfactor Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. when i was up there last - few months ago mind you - was speaking to a few of the locals off the rocks there and they told me that a few were getting caught round the corner at copacabana/macmasters. could be worth a shot. the lagoon had just opened up though which im sure would have helped
  17. If you're land based and have access to deepish water - id personally get a couple of 85c loaves of bread from woolies and half a kilo of prawns - put a loaf of bread in a bucket and put just enough water in it for the bread to soak it all up - mush it up and chuck in a couple of handfuls every 5-10 minutes or so - then just send your prawn (peeled) down unweighted in the trail. sure fire way to catch a few fish. and try focus on an early morning/late afternoon high tide.
  18. i've been using an abu garcia vanguard (3-4kg - feels more like 1-3kg) for my light top water stuff lately, great little stick matched with a 1000 stradic & 3lb power pro.
  19. Yeah gets so busy on weekends. For the whiting though I use the other end of the beach or just in the middle where the point comes out. Usually a touch more quiet. I must say I fish there a lot and that was the first big one I've seen! Tons of littlies and a few numb rays but none that big. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Haven't been able to get out for my afternoon sessions after work lately due to the weather but had the day off so headed down around 10am. Tide was just starting to drop so started throwing some stickbaits around and 2nd cast managed a nice little whiting. They were fired up and was getting hits every second cast or so and managed another couple small ones and a few dropped. Upped lure size and managed one more nice one before they slowed down. Worked my way over to the moorings as the tide was well on its way by now but had a pretty tough time of it. No touches for a good hour or so and then finally managed an undersized flattie. Few more casts and was onto a better one this time - about 40-45cm but dropped him as I was putting him into my bag. Really need to invest in a little net or something. Couple more casts and onto a better one again. Wasn't going to let this one go to waste so carefully held my rod in my mouth as I leveraged him into my back pack - suddenly felt something brush beside me - a stingray the size of a horse!!! Nearly had a heart attack so bolted back to shore. Must have been 2.5 across, never seen one this big down there ever. Unfortunately cut my day a little short but enjoyed the flattie for lunch nonetheless! Phone died on me so no flattie photos. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. I just come across them when i'm wading the sandflats chasing whiting and flatties. some big ones around too. i've heard that in around the moorings near the sailing club can be good? not my specialty though mate so someone else might have a better idea.
  22. Dont think they have size limits - i personally find the Maori Wrasse delicious. soft flesh but if you look after it then no worries. Super easy to clean and fillet too.
  23. blue swimmers everywhere in rose bay - need to be careful not to step on them wading out. don't know Botany well at all but i'm sure and sand flats w/ nipper holes will hold a few?
  24. Yeah vac sealing is probably the best. Try and retain as much of the ink as possible - and a bit of sea water in the bag your freezing it in i find stops any freezer burn and makes for a nice little addition once its defrosted.
  25. She's a beaut for DB! Nice work - might have to invest in some of those crabbies!
