  1. Its a type of angler fish missing its lure. Not sure what type of angler fish though.

Pretty sure its lure is there, seen in both shots as the little cream protrusion at the front of its head.

I don't think its a Frogfish either Swordy.

With 25 plus different Anglerfish in OZ and they change colours to match surroundings with Black common.

As a example here's a photo of "Striate Anglerfish" and you can see the colour variation in the same species (from the "Australian Museum")

With so little written about them I'm at a loss.

I hope it is a Painted Anglerfish there NaCIH2OK9.

But for me I'm at a loss but I'd still love to know which one it is.

  2. I get to fish a remote part of the Kimberleys a bit, so there's no official names to smaller tributaries and bays so they have their own unique name, all with a story behind them.

And so we have ... Poo Beach, Dick Doc Creek, Mud Bay, Coke Can creek, Bat creek, Warrens Arm, Fire Island and so on.

Plenty of others but pretty plain.

  3. I recon ... though I could be mistaken.

I recon its a Yellowtail Barracuda Sphyraena obusata . I call it a Sea Pike, plus they have a few other common names. Note the Smaller Dorsal and Anal fins and are rounder (cylindrical) than the Longfin Pike. The stripe is also just above the Pectorial fin where the L/F Pike is higher.

Certainly not as common as Longfin Pike, but have caught them in Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay also up the Barrier reef.

  4. Does anyone know what the legal size for pike (snook, short-fin sea pike) is?

I'm guessing you caught this fish in Sydney, now it would be unlikely to be a Short-fin Sea pike (Snook) Sphyraena novaehollandiae.

More likely it would be a Longfin Pike, (Dinolestes lewini) the most common one around and I believe this is the one every one is talking about.

You may have caught a Striped Sea Pike (Sphyraena obtusata) many other common names for this critter, certain not as common and a lot skinnier with stripes along its body.

Matter of fact I caught a one of these in Sydney harbour only a couple of weeks ago but I would guess it would not weigh much over 400 grms even though it was a long fish.

Now this is my 2 cents worth, without a photo hard to ID correctly. Anything is possible.

    BF. :)

  5. I'm pretty sure Vladd and Ben F have got them in the Harbour as well.

There's every chance of it Blackfish, wouldn't be the first time I've thought of it.
I can believe a Blue Throat may have swum to the harbour, but not the Barramundi that have turned up here also

And there was the 2 Coral Trout taken as well. Positively ID'ed.
