How big do the buggers grow and what are size limits and eating quality?
They seem to be a pretty common by-catch when fishing off the stones for Pigs and Bream ETC. I've never seen one that I would consider big enough and never heard of any body eating them.
But anythings possible.
Catching one off the sand is certainly a surprise.

Eastern Kelpfish Chironemus marmoratus.
Very common little critter, pretty sure its come up on here before a few times.
-
Cracker of a Bream you have there and the other fish is a Male Crimson Banded Wrasse. Notolabrus gymnogenis.
-
Yours looked a good fish there Finin.
-
Hey Filthmonger do you have any bigger size photos of this fish ...... bit hard to ID.
It's very dark and the only other critter it could be I would guess is a Black Cod, Epinephelus daemelli.
-
I recon it would be what Slinky and NaCIH20K9 said as could only be a Branchiostegus wardi as its no Branchiostegus serratus and they recon (DPI) they're the only 2 that inhabit NSW waters.
Some one caught a big one and posted it here a while ago.
Gee ya goat be quick around here
-
My guess would also be a Small Mouth Scad (Alepes apercna) because if it isn't, stuffed if I know what else it would be.
-
Wow
If I had to have a guess, I'd say Epinephelus ergastularius (Grey) Banded Rock Cod.
Certainly unusual ........ mind you Im saying that a lot lately.
-
I'll try and get this one right. I'm with Yowie.
The ugly one is a "Eastern Frogfish" Batrachomoeus dubius
Really strong jaws ............................... I got bitten by one trying to unhook it.
-
My guess would also be a Purple Cod, though my last guess was way off the mark.
"Epinephelus cyanopodus" I know of one taken at Lake Maquarie last year. Certainly unusual.
-
I'm with Yowie.
I recon yours, Elferoz, maybe a "Eastern Wirrah". Not known for their eating qualities.

How do you recommend cooking them?
I catch them regularly and wasn't a fan of the taste. In saying that I oven grillef it at the request of the boss . maybe pan fried could be better?
Is it in the Sydney area you catch them regularly Elferoz.

Well Well Well. I recon thats a Maori Rockcod Epinephelus undulatostriatus.
Certainly unusual but I know of a good one taken at the Banks a couple of years ago and another good one up at Long Reef, but still unusual.
Good work.
Well thats what I recon.

In the search Bar at the top type in Painted Grinner, a few have come up on here over the years.
"Trachinocephalua myops"
-
Diamondfish also heard them called Mono's (Monodactylus argenteus) pretty common in Sydney but the Batfish, never seen one in Sydney before but anythings possible.
Certainly rare I would guess.
-
I would guess Longfin Perch. "Caprodon longimanus"
Maybe a male.
-
I recon thats the one to.
They get in balls and look great in the water.
A "Plotosus Lineatus" that is.
-
I don't think it's a Striped Raphael catfish (Platydoras armatulus) , they are a freshwater fish. Pretty sure it is Plotosus lineatus.
I recon thats the one to.
They get in balls and look great in the water.
-
If it was 2 kg it may have been oversize anyway.
-
Thats why I recon a Latin name is always good after the common name. Schuettea scalaripinnis
-
On a remote part of the Kimberley Coast, a Osprey sit on its nest.
What a great bit of Real Estate.
Osprey soaring.
-
I'm assuming "Baltic Minnows" I guess any bigger tackle store may have them.
-
I'm with Scratchie.
Blind Shark. Brachaelurus waddi.
Type Blind Shark into the search function and there's a few thats come up before.
-
Oops, I meant Grunter.
Fish ID (gunthers wrasse)
in The Aquarium
Posted
Gunthers Wrasse. Pseudolabrus guentheri.
I think they've come up on here before, have a look on the search feature.
