  1. Do you checks but there is nothing to say the next engine you buy doesn’t blow a head gasket 6mths after you buy it.

so if it’s been repaired by a Lic mechanic and the reason has been found and fixed it should give yes of great service.

The fuel that I use  is that same as my ETEC, its unlead 90. I'm using Evinrude XD50 in it after I ran out of Yamalube.

Thermostat is pretty easy to check. It might cost you a gasket. There are 4 or 5 10mm bolts on the front just above the top cylinder. I bought a new one, but I think that it is slightly the wrong one. I ended up cleaning the original by boiling it in water/vinegar and it came up a treat. I also tested it by putting in in hot water and it seemed to open ok. Itinitall, it was stuck half open when I took it out. My older ine doesn't get all that hot, so I think that the water jacket has a lot of build up in it. One day, I'll investigate pulling hte powerhead off and checking it all out.

For now, I'm using the 2004 model and it goes great.

    Have you tried Salt Away

i used it in my mates 2006 90hp Yamaha and my Etec.

the Yamaha definitely flowed better after two flushes.

first flush we stopped the motor and left the salt away in the motor for a week then did another flush the same.

the the following week took it for a good run up the harbour and when back home the tell tale did have more flow.

just need to iron out this issue of it chucking a wobbly like it did for today for about 10 mins on and off.

ran like a dream after the wobbly and at 1/4 choke.

So after the Wobbly you say it perform well (Albeit with 1/4 Choke?)

I would phone the marine Mech and check but a slight turn of the Idle mixture to a richer setting should help get rid of the need for choke.

If the wobble has gone it may have been some residual debris left over after the clean, take it for a few warm up runs then a few full throttle runs and see how it performs, the plugs may also have caught some carbon if it hasn't seen WOT for a while, so give them a clean as well.

If Yamaha say 100:1 is the setting I wouldn't go to 50:1 but there is nothing wrong with a little extra oil like 80:1 without risking fouling the plugs on trolling. Older motors were at 50:1 as the systems weren't as advance and emissions wasn't as big a issue.

  4. I would park it on the street / front nature strip with a good cover or two.

    or

Get a steel pole set into the Garage with a remote electric winch, disconnect the boat from the car, hook the winch to the front of the trailer and drag it up the drive way, secure wheels and then secure front of trailer, to stop it from tipping up.

Then do the reverse when you want to use the boat,

p.s: I do have a theory the easier it is to get in and out the more you will use it, if its to hard to get in and out then it will become a yard ornament.

P.P.S What size and model boat are we talking about

Missed out 😁. I won't rush into buying a boat just because of my ignorance in this domain. There are couple of similar boats on gumtree.

2nd hand boats are like buses, another will be along shortly

A quick test for soft Transom and floor besides the tap and push is to use the outboard leg and get someone to lift and lower it and watch to see if the transom bends or moves.

What sort of Fishing will you be doing (Offshore or just in the Harbour and bays with kids and wife.

    Watersports? Tubing and Skiing?

  6. Geez the only thing I have to hide is the cheeky Cigarette when on a boys weekend away, everything else isn't tracked, probably because both aren't massive spenders and she knows I'm a bit tight when it comes to spending on myself.

When looking for a boat we went to the Sydney Darling Harbour boat show:

I was in the Stacer 519 Bowrider and the salesman asked if I need help, I said I wanted this boat, just need my wife to look at it,

Boatshow Salesman asked "Is she here"

ME: Yep looked around and said that's her waving from the massive wakeboard boat, yelling "Lets get this one"

Boatshow Salesman: Quick get out of this boat, most wives are looking a cheap tinnie yours in in a $130,000 Wake boat

Discussed the Bowrider with the salesman and left as we were just starting out boat upgrade journey.

The kids and I did the dealer inspections on weekends and one dealer had rabbits in the yard, so my 3 kids chased them around for ages and the salesman remember me from the Darling Harbour show.

We went to the trailer boat show at SOP Homebush to buy the 519 bowrider on special,

Met the same Boatshow salesman and my wife decided we should pick the larger size boat than I was looking at, I agreed and she negotiated the deal, got the list of options included, told the dealer we will be back in 20mins.

Wife made me read the list and said if you don't tick it your not getting it in 12mths, its now or never, don't want to hear you say it needs to be upgraded or bigger, so I ticked heaps and then she read through the list and asked the kids, have you heard Dad talk about this or that.

Then back to the dealer and did the deal with Boatshow salesman for the boat, I'm super happy, she is relived I have stopped talking about buying a boat and happy days. That was 2016.

So one lazy day in 2019 I said I was going to the trailer boat show at Rosehill and my wife and kids said they would come along, I was just looking and passing time.

Got chatting to a Stacer salesman (Salesman 1) looking at the new 539 bowrider and comparing to mine, when the Boatshow Salesman I purchased my Stacer 539 of in 2016, appeared and then stopped and said, didn't I sell you a bowrider, I said yes and then his face lit up and he smiled.

Boatshow Salesman : your dealing with the wrong person, he said as he was looking round excited.

Salesman 1: Not sure what your talking about and he looked at me

Boatshow Salesman: Where is his wife and kids, look for her in our bigger boats, then started laughing and looking around, as he found her in a $70k Stejcraft 580 deluxe half cab, He remembered her name and called out is it time for a bigger boat.

Had to drag my wife away as they started discussing options and trade in prices on my bowrider, she finished with we will be back soon.

  7. Looks awesome, have always though when my boat get some missing paint and stuff I would get it wrapped.

    P.s

How long is the draw bar on that trailer? Easy launching as you car doesn't go in as deep or at all?

jeffb5.8.... that is an awesome idea the thermos with hotdog inside...genius you are.....have to try that :)

Having 3 kids you learn a trick or two, its amazing how much they can eat in a 4hr fishing session

A related question, how do you launch without getting your feet wet. Do you wear gumboots?

    Two ways

    1. Have a long rope tied to the bow and stop short of the water, give the boat a push off and let it float out and then drag to the wharf.

    2. Same as above but have the rope tied to the post on the trailer with plenty of slack line, reverse and brake. the boat will float off and then pull the car forward and jump out and pull the boat over to the wharf.

    3. I park just on the water line, climb on the trailer push the boat off about half way, then give it a big shove and jump on the front, start it up and drive over to the wharf, tie off and then move my car.

    4. Same as No.3 but open the Ute tailgate, park a little deeper in the water and then climb from the tailgate to the boat and drive my boat off.

I have gloves in the boat (Framers Gloves) they have the thumb and two fingers cut out, I also wear layer with the top layer being a spray jacket.

Thermos full of Hot choc and a small thermos with Pot Noodles for food, or if the kids are with me a thermos with hot water and hotdogs inside, then its just sauce and buns need for dinner.

P.s Inflatable life jacket as I would drown wearing the layers.

  10. Do t forget to do the practice test on the RMS website once you get a perfect score 10 times you are ready to spend the $50 and do the test and then get a mate to sign your log book and your Lic and ready to go to a fast motor on your boat, maybe a 9.9hp.

So, there we are, so, within a couple of weeks all should be good to go and hope to enjoy the Opti for a fair while from now!

This will change the boat so much it will be like a new boat again, the extra 100hp will be a godsend when you need the power to get the hell out of dodge.

Love to read how much of a difference it makes in your opinion having driven the same boat with both motors.

  12. I have had both and my Skid trailer is so much easier, it also supports the boat a lot more and when towing the boat doesn’t move side to side.

the keel sits on rollers and the skid support the sides.

A good tip for yabbie pumps.

DO NOT put any grease on them at all.

Grease and sand is a fantastic abrasive and will wear out anything..

Just give the pump a thorough hose out and leave it.

I also back off the wing nut squeezing the rubber washer / seal that way it allows it to stay its normal thickness rather than squashing down over time.

  14. 3 weeks ago I did a night trip on the harbour, leaving Rhodes and heading to the Harbour Bridge I came across 3 boats all anchored in the channel off the Rowing club / Cabarita and none had lights on, lucky it was like glass and I was only doing 35knots, so was able to steer round them like a slalom.

There was also a few near goat island but due to the city lights you could see them a lot clearer.

    Bloody Dangerous

Its always good to have two sets of eyes when traveling at night, just in case you miss something.

I would ring the NSW police & ask what there definition is of 'local'!

Could be the same postcode, could be the police local command area or region?

According to our Local Copper, if your suburb has all of the essential services then there should be no need for you to leave your post code.

    Doctors

    Supermarket

    Parks

    Chemist

Service Station (Fuel, Bread Milk) alternative to super markets less crowds

Bottle Shop we did laugh about this one

If you don't have the above services one post code over will have them so there is no need for someone from Blacktown to be in Concord.

I'm lucky as we have all essentials plus a boat ramp or two, but using my brain I wont be going out in the boat over Easter as there will be heaps of Muppets who haven't used their boat in years looking to just get out of the house and fishing is the excuse.

If I need to go fishing it will be after Easter and during the week, work would be happy for people to take a day off.

Since we are in isolation lock down, any chance you or other YouTube fishos want to give some tips of setting up Go Pros Action cams ect, editing and uploading to YouTube?

  17. I caught a Pike Eel on Friday night in the harbour.

didnt have any issue getting my hook back, just held it right with a rag and long nose pliers.
it was only about 45cm long

  18. While I don't let my boat fill with rain water (Its either garaged or I have a water proof cover), I do fill the bilge on occasion with fresh water and then use the bilge pump to make sure its running and clear.

No point finding out it doesn't work or is blocked when you are on the water.
