    Dumb Things

How could I forget this one???!!! I was fitting a fire extinguisher to my boat last year. Spent ages looking for a spot that was easily accessible, yet not in the way. Finally picked a spot on the false floor near the side of the boat. So I drilled a couple of small holes through the (carpetted) floor for the screws to go into. After drilling the second hole, I said to myself "Is that daylight I can see?" Jumped out and looked under the boat and yep... I'd drilled straight through the bottom of the hull!!! Luckily, it was easily fixed with the help of my panelbeater Brother-in law. Didn't he get a laugh out of it though!

Speaking of bungs, my boat's got one of those American brass ones that you need a spanner to undo. Last time I went to take it out, I noticed it was very tight. I gave it my all and suddenly out she came, sending me flying backwards with my head hitting the swim platform, causing a large lump. To my dismay, the WHOLE thing had come out, including the female thread which fits in the boat. Managed to refit the bung, but she still won't undo. I now have to rely on the bilge pump. At least I know I can't leave the bung out now!

G'day Raiders! After reading (and contributing to) some pretty funny posts about boating stuff ups, I thought I'd pop the question....What's the dumbest or most embarrassing thing you've done whilst fishing or boating? You can read about mine here.

Maybe we should start a new post, "What's the dumbest thing you've done whilst fishing or boating?"

    Boat Tilting

Majed, Did you see my replies to your earlier post here? http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/inde...showtopic=18410 Did you experiment with the trim? Was the boat loaded evenly? Was the boat always leaning the same way?

Nooiicee boat!!! It may sound anal, but I have a checklist (on computer for easy editting) for when I go boating, including all the things I need to pack (key included), checks (engine etc) I need to do etc. On the list, I've got things I need to do or pack at home, as well as what needs to be done when I arrive at the ramp. I don't always refer to the list, but I should've last time I got to the ramp. Got all ready, backed the boat in, started the motor, went to drive the boat off but it wouldn't budge. Forgot to take the straps off didn't I !! Jumped back in the car and drove back up the ramp a bit to take the straps off (very embarrassed), got out of the car & noticed the boat engine was still running. Anyway, when I got home I got on the computer and changed to bold text the "Remove Straps" part!!! P.S. Woohoo, I'm not the only one! Good on you Jewnut!!!
  13. Hi Raiders, My name is Keith, nickname Kenny (long story). I am VERY nearly 40 and have rediscovered fishing through my 5 year old son (PJ), who is keen as, which is great. I used to fish heaps as a kid, particularly for Luderick. It's great that I now have a reason to get involved again (not that anyone needs a reason to go fishing). The is into horses, so whilst she and daughter Samatha (1 today) do the horse thing, PJ and I fish. We have a Bayliner 2050 bowrider with a 5 litre V8 sterndrive. Now before you all go boo, , , we use it for fishing/skiing and cruising, and it really is a good all round boat. Had a Whittley Monterey before that, and a Camero ski boat before that, so I've had a few different types of boat. I just love getting out on the water! My most meritorious catch to date is a tuna of somewhere over the 40kg mark, caught with good mate of Raiders in Ross Hunter (legend!) See the bit under "Three Hour Epic" at this site. http://www.gamefishingcharters.com.au/Game...s_Sept_Oct.html (P.S. Despite help from fellow raiders, I still can't abbreviate links properly. Keep getting message that I need to enter a URL, even when I paste & highlight them. Any more help would be greatly appreciated!!???). Nowadays, PJ and I mainly fish the smooth bits of the Hawkesbury (he gets seasick easily). Keep an eye out for us. It's the only V8 bowrider I know of with a bait board on the back! The boat rego is suspiciously similar to my username too (go figure).
  14. Spot on Costa How old are your kids Simon? I've got a 5 year old boy who's my veteran fishing buddy, and a 1 year old girl who comes out ocasionally with the . Got a jacket to fit her from Bias (the daughter that is!). I had a Whittley Monterey (half cabin) and now have a Bayliner bowrider which we use for fishing/skiing/cruising. I can post pictures and give you an idea of prices we paid (2nd hand) if you're interested.
  15. Open with MS Paint if your computer has got it. Can resize it there. Otherwise use this link. http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/inde...showtopic=17267 P.S. Can anybody tell me how to abbreviate links to things like "Click here"? Seen a few in some of the posts.
  16. Majed, Did you see my comments in post#2? Generally, when taking off you should have the motor fully trimmed in, which prevents bow lift and allows the boat to plane quicker. Once on the plane you can then trim up. How much depends on a lot of factors such as boat speed, water conditions etc. Too much trim and the boat may porpoise or the prop may cavitate or slip. Too little trim and you will be pushing a lot of water which may result in a wet ride and lots of fuel being chewed. My tip would be to experiment with it, probably in smooth water first, to see how the boat reacts to different trim settings. Good luck and have fun! P.S. I just read your comment that it was harder to steer one way than the other. From my experience that also can happen when the engine is trimmed in too far. Trim up a bit, and you'll probably notice the steering become lighter and not want to pull to one side. Hope this helps!
  17. This is my second reply tonight re: engine trim (see Cox Craft post, don't know how to put the link here, can anyone tell me?). A boat I used to own with a 135hp outboard on it would lean if given too much throttle when trimmed right in. It had a pin which could be placed in any of a series of holes to limit the amount of "in" trim. It is simply a case of choosing the right position for this pin if your engine is similar. Does anyone know if this is a common feature on outboards? (Got a sterndrive now, so I can't remember).

Just a bit more on Reely's point(s), I've recently bought a Bayliner bowrider as an all round family boat, and am still experimenting with optimum trim settings. Whilst I don't go outside , I do venture out in the Hawkesbury (around Juno Point), which can get a little sloppy. I was travelling along at about 30mph in the old scale when I came across some sloppy water. I backed off a bit & then trimmed in. Immediately after trimming in the ride became a bit wet, so I trimmed out a bit and the ride became comfortable & dry again. In my experience with the boats I've had, it's all about the right speed & trim for the conditions. P.S. If anyone from Bayliner is reading this.......l luuuuuuurrrrrrvvv the boat!

Thanks Strikey Pete, I've heard Little Jerusalem is also good. There is certainly a lot more action in Cowan besides the fishing than there is in Berowra. Next time I'll head straight there and if the fish aren't biting, we'll head to Refuge Bay for a swim at the beach. I've decided I'm a fan of drifting, as we had a lot of success that way up at Port Stephens. Any places to recommend in Cowan?

Not me Strikey Pete, I Launch at Berowra. How'd you go today? We got zip unfortunately? Lost plenty of bait, but poor old PJ (and I) found it hard to detect the bites using light sinkers. We mucked around in Berowra Creek first, then tried Long & Yeoman's Bays, just near the drop offs. We were only really in Cowan a couple of hours as PJ's patience wore a bit thin. Will try again in a week or two though!

No worries Strikey Pete, I'll keep an eye out for you too. I take it that's your boat? I've attached a picture of my boat also. Not really a fishing boat, but we're into waterskiing as well, so its a good allrounder. Transforms easily with the addition of a cutting board at the rear! As for berley, I found some of "Big Jims" pellets, and in keeping with the KISS theory, and as Ray Warren says "Thut'll do mooeee!!!"
